If your CIBIL report shows a loan you never took, an overdue you already paid, or a closed loan still marked open, you can get it corrected for free. Raise a dispute with the credit bureau online, inform the lender in writing, and keep the reference numbers. Under RBI rules the correction must be completed within 30 days, and if it is not, you are owed ₹100 for every day of delay.

Common errors and how much they hurt

Error in the report Why it happens Impact on your score
Overdue or DPD shown after you paid Payment posted late, reporting lag High
Closed loan still shown as "active" Lender did not update closure Medium
Account marked "settled" or "written off" wrongly Lender coding error Very high
Loan or card that is not yours Identity mix-up or fraud Very high
Wrong name, PAN, address or date of birth Data entry error Can merge someone else's history
Duplicate entry of the same loan Reported twice Inflates your debt
Unknown hard enquiries Lender pulled report without your application Low to medium, but may signal fraud

Step-by-step: how to dispute a CIBIL report error

1. Get your full report from every bureau

India has four credit information companies: TransUnion CIBIL, Experian, Equifax and CRIF High Mark. RBI requires each to give you a free full credit report, with score, once every calendar year, with a link on their website home page. Errors are often in only one bureau, because each receives data separately. Our guide on checking your CIBIL score for free shows where to click.

2. Gather your evidence

Keep the no-dues certificate, loan closure letter, bank statement showing the payment, card closure confirmation or a police complaint copy (for fraud). Screenshots of the report section with the error help too.

3. Raise the dispute online with the bureau

Log in to the bureau's website (for CIBIL, through its online dispute resolution page), select the account or field that is wrong, choose the reason and upload documents. Note the dispute ID. The bureau forwards it to the lender; the bureau itself cannot change data the lender reported.

4. Write to the lender at the same time

Email the bank's or NBFC's grievance redressal officer with your dispute ID, the error and your proof. Lenders are the source of the data, so a parallel complaint often speeds things up.

5. Track the 30-day clock

RBI's framework gives the lender 21 days to send corrected data and the bureau 9 more days to update it. A dispute can also be resolved by rejection, but you must be told why. Lenders must use a standard list of rejection reasons that the bureaus circulate.

6. Re-check the report after the update

Download a fresh report. Confirm the account now shows the right status (for example "closed" rather than "settled") and that the score has been recalculated.

7. Escalate if needed

If it is not fixed in 30 days or you disagree with the rejection, move to the RBI Ombudsman (see below).

Worked example: compensation for delay

You file a dispute on 1 August about a personal loan wrongly shown 90 days overdue. The corrected report reaches you on 15 September, which is 45 days later.

  • Allowed time: 30 calendar days
  • Delay: 45 − 30 = 15 days
  • Compensation: 15 × ₹100 = ₹1,500

If the lender took 35 days to send its correction (14 days beyond its 21) and the bureau took 10 days (1 day beyond its 9), the 15 days of delay are split in that proportion: the lender pays ₹1,400 and the bureau ₹100. The amount must reach your bank account within five working days of resolution, so give accurate bank or UPI details when you file.

The bigger gain is the score itself. Removing a wrong 90-day overdue can be the difference between rejection and approval at a good rate. Once fixed, use our loan eligibility calculator to see what you can now borrow.

  • Credit Information Companies (Regulation) Act, 2005 (CICRA): lenders and bureaus must keep your data accurate, complete and updated, and must correct it on a valid request.
  • RBI compensation framework (October 2023, in force from April 2024): 30-day resolution, ₹100 a day for delay, reasons for rejection, and compensation within five working days.
  • Alerts and access: bureaus must send you an SMS or email when a lender accesses your report, so you can spot enquiries you never authorised. Lenders must also alert you before reporting a default.
  • Faster updates: RBI moved lenders to fortnightly reporting from January 2025 and its amended directions shift them to weekly submissions from 1 July 2026, so corrections and repayments should reflect sooner than before.
  • Free annual report from each bureau, as above.

Where to complain

  1. Bureau and lender: the online dispute plus a written complaint to the lender's grievance officer, as above. Each bureau also has an internal ombudsman.
  2. RBI Integrated Ombudsman: credit bureaus have been covered since 2022. If there is no resolution within 30 days, or you are unhappy with the response, file free at cms.rbi.org.in. The Reserve Bank – Integrated Ombudsman Scheme, 2026, in force from 1 July 2026, generally requires you to file within 90 days of the reply or the end of the response period.
  3. Loan or card taken in your name by someone else: this is identity fraud. Call 1930 or file at cybercrime.gov.in, and attach the acknowledgement to your dispute.
  4. Unknown lender or app you never dealt with: check it on sachet.rbi.org.in and report it there if it is unregistered.

What not to do

  • Do not pay "credit repair" agents who promise to delete genuine defaults. Accurate negative data cannot legally be removed early, and only the lender can correct a real error.
  • Do not settle a loan you do not owe just to stop calls; a "settled" tag is worse for your score. See loan settlement vs closure.
  • Do not open new credit while a large dispute is pending; extra enquiries muddy the picture.
  • Do not ignore the error because your score "looks fine". A wrong entry can surface when you apply for a home loan, and fixing it then delays your purchase.
  • Do not dispute correct information in bulk; frivolous disputes are rejected and waste your 30 days.

Key takeaways

  • Disputes are free; file online with the bureau and write to the lender together.
  • The lender has 21 days and the bureau 9 days: 30 days in all.
  • Delay beyond 30 days earns ₹100 per day, paid within five working days of resolution.
  • Check all four bureaus, because an error may sit in only one.
  • Unresolved after 30 days? Go to the RBI Ombudsman at cms.rbi.org.in; report identity fraud to 1930.
  • Once the report is clean, follow the habits in our guide on how to improve your CIBIL score.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a CIBIL dispute take?

Under RBI's 2023 compensation framework, the lender gets 21 days and the credit bureau a further 9 days, so a complaint should be resolved within 30 calendar days of filing.

What happens if CIBIL does not resolve my dispute in 30 days?

You are entitled to compensation of Rs 100 for every calendar day of delay beyond 30 days, shared between the lender and bureau according to who caused the delay. It must be credited to your bank account within five working days of resolution.

Can CIBIL change my report without the bank's confirmation?

No. The bureau only holds data that lenders report. It forwards your dispute to the lender, and the record changes only after the lender confirms or corrects it.

Is there a fee to raise a CIBIL dispute?

No. Raising a dispute with CIBIL or any other credit bureau is free. Be wary of agents who charge to 'clean' or 'repair' your credit report.

Can I complain to the RBI Ombudsman about a credit bureau?

Yes. Credit information companies have been covered by the RBI Integrated Ombudsman Scheme since 2022. If the bureau or lender does not resolve your complaint within 30 days, you can file at cms.rbi.org.in.
