How to Check CIBIL Score Free: Step-by-Step Guide
How to check your CIBIL score free online: the RBI free-report rule, steps on cibil.com, other bureaus, reading the report, and why checking never hurts.

In this article
You can check your CIBIL score free once every calendar year by requesting the free annual report on the official TransUnion CIBIL website, cibil.com, using your PAN, mobile number and email. RBI rules require all four credit bureaus to give you one free full report with score each year, so you can get up to four free reports annually. Checking your own score is a soft enquiry and never lowers it.
Why check your CIBIL score?
Lenders check your credit report before approving any loan or card and use your score to decide the interest rate. Checking it yourself before you apply lets you:
- Spot errors — a loan you never took, a closed loan still showing as active, or a wrong late payment.
- Catch identity fraud early, such as a loan taken in your name by someone else.
- Know where you stand before applying, so you do not collect rejections and hard enquiries.
- Negotiate a better rate if your score is high. See how to get the lowest loan interest rate.
Free options to check your credit score
| Source | What you get | How often free |
|---|---|---|
| TransUnion CIBIL (cibil.com) | Full credit report with CIBIL score | Once per calendar year (RBI mandate) |
| Experian India (experian.in) | Full report with Experian score | Once per calendar year (RBI mandate) |
| Equifax India (equifax.co.in) | Full report with Equifax score | Once per calendar year (RBI mandate) |
| CRIF High Mark (crifhighmark.com) | Full report with CRIF score | Once per calendar year (RBI mandate) |
| Your bank's app or net banking, and many fintech apps | Score (sometimes summary report) from one bureau | Often monthly or more |
The RBI's free annual report rule has applied since January 2017. Because it applies to each bureau separately, you can spread the four free reports through the year — for example, one each quarter — to keep watch at no cost.
Be careful with third-party apps: use only well-known banks and regulated platforms, read the consent screen, and avoid apps that ask for unnecessary permissions. Paid CIBIL subscriptions exist, but you do not need one to check your score.
Step-by-step: get your free CIBIL report on cibil.com
- Go to the official site — type cibil.com directly in your browser rather than clicking ads or links from SMS.
- Choose the free annual report / free CIBIL score option (not the paid subscription plans).
- Create an account with your name, email, mobile number, date of birth and a password.
- Enter your ID: PAN is the standard choice; other IDs such as passport or voter ID may be accepted.
- Verify with the OTP sent to your mobile. If the bureau cannot verify you automatically, it may ask questions about your existing loans or cards.
- View and download your score and full report from the dashboard. Save the PDF.
The process is similar on the Experian, Equifax and CRIF websites. Once you have used your free CIBIL report for the year, the next free one is available from 1 January of the following year.
How to read your CIBIL report
The report has these main sections:
- Score: a number from 300 to 900. Most lenders see 750+ as good.
- Personal information: name, date of birth, PAN and other IDs. Check spelling and IDs carefully.
- Contact and employment details: addresses and phone numbers reported by lenders.
- Account information: every loan and credit card, with lender, sanctioned amount, current balance, status (active, closed, written-off, settled) and a month-by-month payment history.
- Enquiry information: every hard enquiry by lenders, with date and purpose.
In the payment history, "000" or "STD" means paid on time. Numbers like 030 or 090 are days past due (DPD). Codes such as SMA, SUB, DBT or LSS mean the account has been classified as stressed, substandard, doubtful or loss — serious negatives. A status of "Settled" or "Written-off" hurts more than an ordinary late payment; our guide to loan settlement vs closure explains why.
Worked example: check your credit utilisation
Your report lists two credit cards:
| Card | Limit | Balance reported |
|---|---|---|
| Card A | ₹1,50,000 | ₹60,000 |
| Card B | ₹50,000 | ₹30,000 |
| Total | ₹2,00,000 | ₹90,000 |
Utilisation = ₹90,000 ÷ ₹2,00,000 × 100 = 45%. That is well above the widely used 30% benchmark and can pull your score down even if you pay in full each month. Bringing the reported balance below ₹60,000 (30% of ₹2 lakh) before the statement date would help. Lenders now report to bureaus at least fortnightly, so changes show up faster than before. See credit utilization ratio.
Your rights as a consumer
RBI's rules on credit information give you several protections:
- Free annual report from each bureau, as above.
- Access alerts: bureaus must send you an SMS or email when a lender or other specified user accesses your credit report, where your contact details are available. An alert for an application you did not make is a red flag.
- Error correction with compensation: if a complaint about wrong data is not resolved within 30 calendar days, you are entitled to compensation of ₹100 per calendar day of delay from the lender or bureau responsible. For example, a complaint resolved on day 45 would earn 15 × ₹100 = ₹1,500.
- Advance intimation: lenders must inform you before reporting you as a defaulter to a bureau.

What score do lenders want?
| Score | What it usually means |
|---|---|
| 750-900 | Good to excellent; easier approval and better rates |
| 700-749 | Fair to good; approval likely, rate may be higher |
| 650-699 | Borderline; more scrutiny, higher rates |
| Below 650 | Frequent rejection; consider secured credit to rebuild |
| NH / NA | No or thin history |
These ranges are indicative; each lender sets its own cut-off and also weighs income, job stability and existing EMIs. Estimate how much you can borrow with our loan eligibility calculator.
Common myths
- "Checking my score will reduce it." False. Self-checks are soft enquiries.
- "Paying a bureau will remove a default." False. No one can delete accurate negative data; only incorrect entries are corrected through a dispute.
- "I have no loans, so my score must be high." You may have no score at all (NH/NA).
- "Closing old cards always helps." Closing them can raise your utilisation and shorten your history.
Key takeaways
- Every credit bureau must give you one free full credit report with score each calendar year; with four bureaus, that is four free reports a year.
- Use cibil.com directly with your PAN, mobile and email; verify with OTP and download the report.
- Checking your own score is a soft enquiry and never lowers it.
- Read the account and enquiry sections closely; "Settled", "Written-off" and DPD entries hurt most.
- Disputes not resolved within 30 days entitle you to ₹100 per day of compensation.
Frequently asked questions
Can I check my CIBIL score for free?
Yes. RBI requires every credit bureau, including TransUnion CIBIL, to give you one free full credit report with score once every calendar year on request. Many banks and finance apps also show a free score updated more often.
Does checking my CIBIL score reduce it?
No. Checking your own score is a soft enquiry and has no effect on it. Only hard enquiries made by lenders when you apply for credit can affect the score.
Can I check my CIBIL score with just my PAN?
You need your PAN plus your name, date of birth, mobile number and email to register. The bureau verifies your identity with an OTP and sometimes questions about your existing loans before showing the report.
Why is my score different on different apps?
There are four credit bureaus in India — CIBIL, Experian, Equifax and CRIF High Mark — each with its own data and model. Apps may also show a score from a different bureau or a different date, so small differences are normal.
What does NH or NA mean on a CIBIL report?
It means you have no credit history or too little history to generate a score. It is not a negative mark, but some lenders treat it cautiously. A small secured card or loan repaid on time builds a score.
