EPF When Changing Jobs: Transfer, Withdraw or Leave It?
Changing jobs? How EPF transfer works in 2026, why withdrawing costs more than you think, the 5-year tax rule, new 75%/12-month exit rules and EPS.

In this article
When you change jobs, the best default is to transfer your EPF to the new employer's account under the same UAN, not withdraw it. A transfer keeps the money compounding at 8.25% a year (the rate for 2025-26), counts your service with both employers towards the 5-year rule that makes EPF withdrawals tax-free, and keeps your pension (EPS) service continuous. In most cases EPFO now triggers the transfer automatically once your new employer links your UAN, but you should check that it actually happened.
How EPF transfer works in 2026
Each employee has one Universal Account Number (UAN) for life. Every employer opens a new member ID (PF account number) under that UAN. "Transferring" means moving the balance from the old member ID to the new one.
Automatic transfer. If your UAN is Aadhaar-linked and KYC-verified, and both employers are covered by EPFO (not private exempted PF trusts), EPFO generally initiates the transfer once the new employer links your UAN and the first contribution arrives. EPFO has also revamped Form 13 so that most transfer claims no longer need approval at the destination office, and in most cases the employer's approval is not needed either.
Manual transfer. If the automatic route does not work, file the claim yourself:
- Log in to the EPFO Unified Member Portal with your UAN.
- Check that your old employment has a date of exit. If not, you can enter it yourself (two months after leaving), choosing the reason "cessation".
- Under Online Services, choose One Member – One EPF Account (Transfer Request).
- Select the previous member ID, choose whether the old or new employer attests the claim, and authenticate with Aadhaar OTP.
- Track the status on the portal. Once complete, the passbook for the new member ID shows the transferred amount.
When transfers stall. Common causes are a name or date-of-birth mismatch between Aadhaar and EPFO records, a missing exit date, unverified bank KYC, or an old employer with an exempted trust (which needs the trust's own process). Fix profile details through the "Modify basic details" option on the portal, then reapply.
Transfer vs withdraw vs leave untouched
| Option | What happens | Tax | Long-term effect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Transfer to new account | Balance moves under same UAN | None | Compounding continues; service counted together |
| Withdraw (unemployed) | Up to 75% now, rest after 12 months unemployed | Taxable and TDS if continuous service is under 5 years | Retirement savings reset to zero |
| Leave in old account | Earns interest until it becomes inoperative | Interest on it may become taxable after you stop contributing | Fragmented records; harder claims later |
The 5-year rule: why transfer protects you from tax
EPF withdrawals are tax-free only if you have 5 years of continuous service. Service with a previous employer counts only if that balance was transferred to the current account. If you withdraw after 3 years at one company:
- The employer's contribution and interest on it are taxed as salary.
- Interest on your own contribution is taxed as income from other sources.
- Your own contribution is taxable to the extent you claimed a deduction for it under the old regime.
- EPFO deducts TDS at 10% if the withdrawal is ₹50,000 or more and PAN is linked (higher rate without PAN). You can submit Form 15G/15H if your total income is below the taxable limit.
The Income-tax Act, 2025 replaced the 1961 Act from 1 April 2026 and renumbered these provisions, but the 5-year rule and the ₹50,000 TDS threshold remain. Also note that interest on employee contributions above ₹2.5 lakh a year (₹5 lakh where the employer does not contribute) is taxable each year regardless.
Withdrawal rules if you are between jobs
In October 2025, EPFO's Central Board of Trustees simplified partial withdrawals and revised the rules for leaving employment. Reported changes, as of October 2026:
- Unemployment: Up to 75% of the eligible balance can be withdrawn once you are unemployed; the remaining 25% stays in the account and can be withdrawn as final settlement only after 12 months of continued unemployment (previously two months). Reports indicate the 12-month provision came into force in mid-2026.
- Minimum balance: For partial withdrawals generally, 25% of contributions must stay in the account.
- Full withdrawal is still allowed on retirement at 55 or later, permanent disability and certain other cases.
- Pension (EPS): The waiting period for withdrawing EPS money on leaving service was also lengthened (reported as 36 months).
Because these rules changed recently and have different conditions by claim type, check the current claim options on the EPFO member portal before planning around them.
What happens to your EPS pension
Of your employer's 12% contribution, 8.33% (on wages up to ₹15,000 a month, so at most ₹1,250 a month) goes to the Employees' Pension Scheme. EPS is not a balance that earns interest; it builds pensionable service.
- Transfer: EPS service is carried forward under the same UAN.
- 10 years of service: Once your total pensionable service reaches 10 years, you can no longer withdraw EPS; instead, you become eligible for a monthly pension from age 58 (reduced pension from 50).
- Under 10 years: You may withdraw a lump sum based on a table, or take a scheme certificate to carry service forward. Withdrawing EPS early breaks the service count toward a lifetime pension.
Worked example: the real cost of withdrawing
Priya, 28, has ₹4 lakh in EPF after 3 years at her first job. She is moving to a new company.
If she withdraws ₹4 lakh
- Service under 5 years, so the withdrawal is taxable.
- TDS at 10%: ₹40,000 deducted upfront.
- Her final tax depends on her slab; in the 20% or 30% bracket, she may owe more than the TDS on the taxable portion.
If she transfers and leaves it alone until 53
At the 2025-26 rate of 8.25% a year, held for 25 years:
₹4,00,000 × (1.0825)^25 ≈ ₹29.02 lakh
That figure assumes the rate stays at 8.25%, which is illustrative; EPF rates are declared yearly and have ranged between 8.10% and 8.80% over the past decade. Even so, the ₹4 lakh she might spend today is worth roughly seven times as much at retirement, tax-free if the 5-year rule is met. This does not include the new contributions she will make.

A checklist for every job change
- Before leaving: Confirm your UAN is Aadhaar-linked and KYC (bank, PAN) is verified on the member portal.
- Give the new employer your UAN on day one, so they do not create a new one by mistake. If you have two UANs, raise a merger request with EPFO.
- Check the old exit date is updated within two months of leaving.
- Watch for the transfer in your passbook over the following weeks; if nothing happens, file a transfer request.
- Download your service history from the portal and keep a copy.
- Do not withdraw for routine spending. If you need money between jobs, rely on your emergency fund first.
- Raise grievances on EPFiGMS (the EPFO grievance portal) if a claim is pending too long.

Key takeaways
- Transfer, do not withdraw: EPF earns 8.25% (2025-26 rate) and transferred service counts towards the 5-year tax-free rule.
- Transfers are mostly automatic for Aadhaar-verified UANs, but check your passbook and file a transfer request if needed.
- Withdrawals before 5 years of continuous service are taxable, with 10% TDS on amounts of ₹50,000 or more.
- Revised rules allow up to 75% to be withdrawn on unemployment, with the rest only after 12 months; verify current conditions on the EPFO portal.
- Keep EPS service continuous; 10 years of pensionable service earns a monthly pension from 58.
- Illustratively, ₹4 lakh left in EPF for 25 years at 8.25% grows to about ₹29 lakh.
Frequently asked questions
Is EPF transferred automatically when I change jobs?
In most cases, yes, if your UAN is Aadhaar-linked and KYC-verified and both employers use the EPFO system. Your new employer links the same UAN, and EPFO initiates the transfer. If it does not happen, you can file an online transfer claim (Form 13) on the EPFO member portal.
Should I withdraw or transfer my PF when I change jobs?
Transferring is usually better. A transfer keeps your money earning 8.25% (rate for 2025-26), preserves your continuous service for the 5-year tax rule, and keeps your pension service intact. Withdrawing may attract tax and TDS and sacrifices decades of compounding.
Is EPF withdrawal taxable before 5 years?
Yes. If your total continuous service, including periods with previous employers whose PF was transferred, is under 5 years, the withdrawal is taxable, and TDS of 10% applies if the amount is ₹50,000 or more and PAN is provided.
How much PF can I withdraw if I am unemployed?
Under the revised EPFO framework, up to 75% of the eligible balance can be withdrawn during unemployment, while the remaining 25% can be withdrawn only after 12 months of continued unemployment. Check the EPFO member portal for the current conditions.
Does my EPF earn interest if I leave it in the old employer's account?
Generally yes, until the account becomes inoperative, which happens after you retire at 55 or later and no contributions are received for 36 months. However, an untransferred account fragments your service record and makes later claims harder.
