To cancel a UPI AutoPay mandate, open the UPI app where you set it up (or, increasingly, any UPI app), go to the AutoPay or Mandates section, select the mandate, choose Cancel or Revoke, and confirm with your UPI PIN. As of October 2026, RBI's e-mandate rules let you modify or withdraw a mandate at any time, require a notice at least 24 hours before every debit, and do not allow any fee for registering or using a mandate. Cancelling the mandate does not cancel the subscription, so tell the merchant too.

What UPI AutoPay is

UPI AutoPay is a standing permission (mandate) that lets a merchant debit your bank account on a schedule: daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, yearly or as presented. It is used for OTT subscriptions, mobile and broadband bills, SIPs, insurance premiums, loan EMIs and credit card bills.

The rules come from RBI's e-mandate framework, which RBI consolidated in April 2026 as the Digital Payments – E-mandate Framework, 2026. It covers recurring payments on cards, prepaid instruments (wallets) and UPI.

The key limits and protections

Rule (as of October 2026) Detail
Registration Needs additional factor authentication (your UPI PIN)
First debit Needs authentication
Later debits without PIN Up to ₹15,000 per transaction
Higher limit categories Insurance premiums, mutual fund subscriptions and credit card bill payments: up to ₹1,00,000 per transaction without PIN
Above these limits Each debit needs authentication
Pre-debit notification At least 24 hours before the debit, with an option to opt out
Post-debit alert Sent after each debit
Modify or withdraw Allowed any time, with authentication
Fees to customer None for registration or use

The "maximum amount" you approve at setup is a ceiling, not the amount debited each time, unless the mandate is for a fixed amount. Check this field carefully: a ₹149 subscription with a ₹15,000 ceiling allows larger debits than you may expect.

How to cancel UPI AutoPay: step by step

The menu names change between app versions, but the path is similar everywhere.

  1. Open the UPI app (Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, BHIM, Amazon Pay, your bank's app or another).
  2. Find the mandate list. Look for "AutoPay", "Mandates", "Manage AutoPay" or "Recurring payments", usually under your profile or the payments/settings menu.
  3. Select the active mandate you want to stop. Check the merchant name, amount ceiling, frequency and next debit date.
  4. Choose Cancel, Revoke or Delete. Some apps show "Pause" as a separate option.
  5. Enter your UPI PIN to confirm.
  6. Save the confirmation screenshot or SMS. The mandate should now show as revoked or cancelled.
  7. Cancel the subscription with the merchant in its app or website, so it does not keep billing or report dues.

If the mandate does not show in your app

Under NPCI's October 2025 AutoPay enhancement framework, UPI apps were asked to let you view all your active AutoPay mandates, not just those created in that app, and to let you port a mandate to another app (porting is limited to once per mandate in a rolling 90-day period and needs your UPI PIN). Rollout has varied by app, so if a mandate is missing:

  • check the app you originally used to approve it;
  • check your bank's mobile banking app or net banking, where UPI mandates linked to your account are often listed;
  • call your bank and ask it to revoke the mandate at the account level.

Pause vs revoke

  • Pause suspends debits for a period you choose; the mandate resumes automatically afterward. Useful for a gym or tuition subscription during travel.
  • Revoke/Cancel ends the mandate permanently. To restart, you must set up a new one.

Other kinds of auto-debit

Not every recurring debit is UPI AutoPay. Your bank statement tells you which type you are dealing with.

Statement narration Type How to stop it
UPI mandate / AutoPay UPI AutoPay Revoke in UPI app or via bank
NACH DR / ACH D NACH mandate (EMIs, SIPs, insurance) Ask the merchant/lender to cancel, or submit a cancellation request to your bank
SI Standing instruction with your own bank Cancel in net banking or at the branch
Card SI / recurring card payment E-mandate on credit or debit card Cancel in the card issuer's app or net banking

Our guide on how to read a bank statement explains these codes. Be careful with loan EMIs: stopping the mandate does not stop the EMI being due, and a missed EMI attracts bounce charges and hurts your credit score.

Worked example: the cost of forgotten mandates

Rohan checks his mandates and finds these still active:

Mandate Amount Frequency Yearly cost
Music streaming ₹149 Monthly ₹149 × 12 = ₹1,788
Second OTT platform ₹299 Monthly ₹299 × 12 = ₹3,588
Fitness app ₹1,499 Quarterly ₹1,499 × 4 = ₹5,996
Cloud storage ₹999 Yearly ₹999
Total ₹12,371

He uses only the music app. Cancelling the other three saves ₹3,588 + ₹5,996 + ₹999 = ₹10,583 a year, or about ₹882 a month. Redirected into a monthly SIP instead, that money could grow meaningfully over 10 years; the SIP calculator shows illustrative outcomes at different return assumptions. Any such projection is illustrative and not guaranteed.

What to do if money is still debited

  1. Check the date. A debit already notified before you revoked may still go through. Compare the debit date and time with your revocation confirmation.
  2. Raise a dispute in the UPI app (most apps have "Raise a complaint" or "Help" against the transaction), quoting the UPI reference number.
  3. Write to your bank and the merchant. Ask for a refund of the unauthorised debit and confirmation that the mandate is revoked.
  4. Escalate. If there is no resolution within 30 days, complain to the RBI Integrated Ombudsman at cms.rbi.org.in.
  5. If it looks like fraud (a mandate you never approved), call your bank to block UPI, and report on the 1930 helpline or at cybercrime.gov.in. Fraudsters often send AutoPay or collect requests disguised as "receive money" or "KYC verification" prompts. See UPI scams: what to do.

Under RBI's limited-liability framework in force as of October 2026, reporting an unauthorised electronic transaction within three working days gives the strongest protection. RBI's revised customer-liability directions take effect from 1 January 2027.

Good mandate habits

  • Review all mandates every quarter. Add it to your monthly expense tracking routine.
  • Approve only requests you started. Never enter your UPI PIN to "receive" money.
  • Set a sensible ceiling. For a fixed subscription, approve a ceiling close to the actual amount.
  • Read the 24-hour pre-debit alert. It is your last chance to opt out of that debit.
  • Keep one bank account for subscriptions with a modest balance, so a bad mandate cannot drain your main savings.
  • Do not cancel credit card AutoPay without a backup. A missed card payment brings late fees and interest; see how credit card interest works.

Key takeaways

  • Cancel UPI AutoPay from the app's AutoPay or Mandates section and confirm with your UPI PIN; your bank can also revoke it.
  • As of October 2026, recurring debits up to ₹15,000 run without PIN; insurance, mutual fund and credit card payments up to ₹1 lakh.
  • Banks must send a pre-debit alert at least 24 hours before each debit, and customers pay no fee for e-mandates.
  • Revoking the mandate does not cancel the subscription; tell the merchant too.
  • Dispute unexpected debits in the app or with the bank, then go to the RBI Ombudsman after 30 days.

Frequently asked questions

How do I cancel a UPI AutoPay mandate?

Open the UPI app, go to the AutoPay or Mandates section, select the active mandate, choose Cancel or Revoke and confirm with your UPI PIN. You can also ask your bank to revoke it.

What is the UPI AutoPay limit without a PIN?

As of October 2026, recurring debits up to ₹15,000 per transaction can run without additional authentication after the first one. For insurance premiums, mutual fund subscriptions and credit card bill payments the limit is ₹1 lakh per transaction.

Will I be told before an AutoPay debit happens?

Yes. RBI's e-mandate rules require a pre-debit notification at least 24 hours before each recurring debit, with an option to opt out of that debit or the mandate.

Does cancelling AutoPay cancel my subscription?

No. Revoking the mandate stops the automatic payment, but the merchant may still treat you as subscribed and send dues or suspend service. Cancel the subscription with the merchant as well.

Money was debited after I cancelled the mandate. What should I do?

Raise a complaint in your UPI app or with your bank with the transaction reference, and with the merchant. If it is not resolved within 30 days, escalate to the RBI Integrated Ombudsman at cms.rbi.org.in.

Is there a fee to set up or cancel UPI AutoPay?

No. RBI's e-mandate framework says customers should not be charged for registering or using e-mandates on cards, UPI or prepaid instruments.
