Most delayed income tax refunds come down to a fixable problem on your side: the return not e-verified, a bank account not pre-validated, an inoperative PAN, or a mismatch between your return and AIS. Check the status on the e-filing portal, fix the specific cause, and file a refund reissue request if needed. If the delay is the department's, you are owed interest of 0.5% a month.

First, check where the refund is

  1. Log in to the income tax e-filing portal.
  2. Go to e-File, then Income Tax Returns, then View Filed Returns. Each return shows its stage: submitted, verified, processed, refund issued.
  3. Check Services, then Refund/Demand Status for the refund's mode, date and any failure reason.
  4. Check your email and SMS for an intimation from CPC (Centralised Processing Centre). The intimation compares what you claimed with what the department computed.
Status shown What it means What to do
Submitted, not verified Return not e-verified E-verify now (Aadhaar OTP, net banking or bank EVC)
Verified, not processed In the CPC queue Wait; check bank validation and AIS mismatches meanwhile
Processed, refund determined, not paid Held for a reason Check PAN status, bank account, outstanding demands
Refund failed Credit bounced Re-validate bank account, then request reissue
Processed with a lower refund or demand Adjustment made Read the intimation; rectify or revise if you disagree

The common causes, and the fix for each

1. Return not e-verified. An unverified return is treated as not filed. The deadline to verify is 30 days from filing; verifying later than that makes the filing date the verification date, which may make the return belated. Verify through Aadhaar OTP or net banking.

2. Bank account not pre-validated. Refunds go only to a pre-validated account linked to your PAN. Under Profile, then My Bank Account, add or re-validate the account and nominate it for refund. Name mismatches between PAN and bank records, closed accounts and wrong IFSC codes are the usual reasons for failure.

3. Inoperative PAN. If your PAN is not linked to Aadhaar, it becomes inoperative. The department may process the return but holds the refund, and does not pay interest for that period, until the PAN is made operative again. Linking now requires a fee of ₹1,000.

4. Mismatch with AIS or Form 26AS. If your TDS claim exceeds what deductors reported, or income you reported differs from AIS, the system may hold or reduce the refund. Compare figures using our guide to Form 16, AIS and 26AS, and ask the deductor to correct its TDS return if the gap is on their side.

5. Proposed adjustment notice. CPC may propose an adjustment to your return and ask you to respond, usually within 30 days. Ignoring it delays processing and leads to the adjustment being made. Reply under e-Proceedings.

6. Outstanding demand from an earlier year. The department can set off a refund against an older demand, after giving you notice (old Section 245). If you disagree with the demand, respond on the portal with reasons; if it is genuine, the set-off is final.

7. Return selected for scrutiny or verification. Large refunds, refunds out of line with past returns, and certain deduction claims can be flagged. The refund then waits for the outcome.

8. Defective return. A defect notice must be answered within the time given, usually 15 days, or the return can be treated as invalid.

How long the department can take

Under the 1961 Act, which governs returns for FY 2025-26 (assessment year 2026-27), CPC can process a return within nine months from the end of the financial year in which it was filed. For a return filed in July 2026, that runs to 31 December 2027. Most returns are processed far sooner, but there is no rule that a refund must arrive within weeks. If processing is late, interest compensates you.

Interest on a delayed refund

As of October 2026, refund interest is 0.5% for every month or part of a month:

  • Returns for FY 2025-26: Section 244A of the Income-tax Act, 1961
  • Tax year 2026-27 onward: Section 437 of the Income-tax Act, 2025, with the same rate

For refunds arising from TDS or advance tax, interest generally runs from 1 April of the assessment year to the date the refund is granted, if the return was filed by the due date. For a late return, it runs from the date of filing. No interest is paid if the refund is less than 10% of the tax determined. Delays caused by you, such as an inoperative PAN, are excluded from the interest period.

Worked example

Sunita filed her FY 2025-26 return on 20 July 2026, before the due date, claiming a refund of ₹48,000. The tax determined on processing is ₹1,50,000, so 10% is ₹15,000 and her refund qualifies for interest. The refund is issued on 10 December 2026.

  • Interest period: 1 April 2026 to 10 December 2026
  • Months counted: April to December = 9 (December is a part month, which counts as a full month)
  • Interest: ₹48,000 × 0.5% × 9 = ₹2,160

The ₹2,160 is taxable as income from other sources in the year she receives it (FY 2026-27), and it will appear in her AIS. Many people forget this and get a mismatch the following year.

How to request a refund reissue

If the refund failed because of bank details:

  1. Fix and pre-validate the bank account on the portal.
  2. Go to Services, then Refund Reissue.
  3. Select the assessment year, choose the validated account and submit.
  4. Authenticate with Aadhaar OTP or a digital signature.

Reissued refunds are usually credited in a few weeks.

Where to complain

  1. e-Nivaran grievance on the e-filing portal: choose the category "refund" and the assessment year.
  2. E-filing and CPC helplines: listed on the portal's Contact Us page. Keep your PAN and acknowledgement number ready.
  3. Jurisdictional Assessing Officer: for refunds stuck after scrutiny or appeals.
  4. CPGRAMS (pgportal.gov.in): if grievances through the department do not resolve it within a reasonable time.

Never share OTPs or click "refund" links received by SMS or email. The department does not ask for bank or card details to release refunds; such messages are a common scam. Our guide to UPI scams and what to do covers reporting through cybercrime.gov.in and the 1930 helpline.

Prevent delays next year

  • E-verify immediately after filing.
  • Keep one pre-validated bank account nominated for refunds.
  • Link PAN and Aadhaar.
  • Reconcile every number with AIS and Form 26AS before filing.
  • If you overpay TDS every year, adjust your declarations to your employer, or pay less advance tax; see advance tax guide.
  • If you discover an error after filing, correct it quickly through a revised return.

You can estimate your expected refund with the income tax calculator before filing, so a surprising intimation stands out.

Key takeaways

  • Check the return's stage and the Refund/Demand Status page first; most delays have a specific, fixable cause.
  • The top causes are an unverified return, an account that is not pre-validated, an inoperative PAN and mismatches with AIS or 26AS.
  • As of October 2026, delayed refunds earn 0.5% a month (Section 244A for FY 2025-26; Section 437 of the 2025 Act from tax year 2026-27), unless the refund is under 10% of tax determined.
  • Refund interest is taxable income in the year you receive it.
  • Use refund reissue for failed credits, then e-Nivaran and CPGRAMS if the refund stays stuck.

Frequently asked questions

How long does an income tax refund take?

Once your return is e-verified and processed, the refund is often credited within a few weeks; department guidance has cited roughly four to five weeks. Returns with mismatches, large refunds or pending verification can take much longer.

Do I get interest on a delayed income tax refund?

Yes. Simple interest of 0.5% for each month or part of a month is added, usually from 1 April of the assessment year if you filed on time. No interest is paid if the refund is less than 10% of the tax determined. The interest is taxable as your income.

My refund status says 'refund failed'. What should I do?

This usually means the bank account was not pre-validated, was closed, or had a name or IFSC mismatch. Fix and re-validate the account on the e-filing portal, then submit a refund reissue request under Services.

Can the department adjust my refund against old tax demands?

Yes, but it must first send you an intimation and give you a chance to respond, usually within 30 days. If the demand is wrong, reply on the portal that you disagree, with reasons and proof.

Where do I complain if my refund is stuck for months?

Raise a grievance on the e-filing portal (e-Nivaran), call the e-filing helpline, and if that does not resolve it, escalate through the CPGRAMS public grievance portal.
