"My card promises 5% cashback online, I spent ₹40,000, and the statement shows only ₹1,500." If this is your problem, start by checking three things in the card's terms: the posting time, the monthly cap and the list of excluded categories. If cashback that was clearly due is still missing after the stated posting time, raise a request with the transaction details and escalate in writing.

Cashback is the simplest kind of reward, which is why a shortfall feels like a broken promise. Most gaps come from caps and exclusions, but genuine misses happen too. This guide explains how to tell them apart as of October 2026. For how cashback compares with points and travel rewards, read our pillar on cashback vs reward vs travel credit cards.

Why it happens

Cause What you see What to do
Not posted yet Nothing yet in this statement Check the posting rule; many cards credit in the next cycle
Monthly cap reached Cashback stops at a fixed amount Nothing to claim; spread spends or accept the cap
Excluded category No cashback on rent, fuel, wallet loads, insurance, utilities, EMI Nothing to claim unless the code is wrong
Merchant coded differently Online store earns base rate, not the higher rate Ask with an invoice; outcome not guaranteed
Paid through an aggregator Merchant shows as a payment gateway Ask; often treated as the gateway's category
Offer from merchant, not bank Bank says it is not their cashback Chase the merchant or platform
Offer needed registration or a coupon No cashback on a sale offer Check whether you met the conditions
Refund or cancellation Cashback reversed Expected
Card overdue Cashback withheld Clear dues, then ask

What the rules say (as of October 2026)

  • Cashback terms are set by the issuer, not by RBI. The rate, cap, exclusions and posting time are in the card's Most Important Terms and Conditions (MITC) and on the offer page.
  • Changes need notice. RBI's credit card directions require transparent terms, and changes to charges can only apply prospectively with at least one month's notice.
  • No daily compensation. There is no RBI per-day penalty for late cashback, unlike card closure (₹500 a day) or failed transactions (₹100 a day).
  • Merchant offers are different. If a shopping platform or brand promised the cashback, the bank may not be responsible. Consumer protection law and the National Consumer Helpline (1915) apply to the merchant.
  • Tax: cashback on your own spending is generally treated as a discount, not income. See is credit card cashback taxable for the details and exceptions.

Step-by-step fix

Step 1: check the facts

  1. Open the statement after the one in which you spent. Many cards credit cashback one cycle later.
  2. Find the cashback line. It usually appears as a credit entry with words like "cashback" or "reward credit".
  3. Read the card's cashback rules. Note the rate, the cap per statement or per month, the minimum transaction and the exclusion list.
  4. Check whether the offer was from the bank or the merchant. The offer page or the order confirmation usually says who funds it.

Step 2: raise a request

  1. Wait until the stated posting time has passed. For sale offers, this can be up to 90 days.
  2. Raise a "cashback not received" request in the card app or through customer care. Include the transaction date, amount, merchant and the rule or offer you relied on. Ask for a reference number.
  3. Attach proof: the invoice, the order confirmation and a screenshot of the offer page as it was on the day you paid.
  4. If it was a merchant offer, contact the merchant's support or grievance officer first. Your bank cannot credit cashback it never promised.

Step 3: escalate

  1. Write to the grievance redressal officer, then the nodal officer, if customer care rejects the request without naming the term that excludes it.
  2. File with the RBI Ombudsman at cms.rbi.org.in (helpline 14448) if the issuer does not reply within 30 days or you are not satisfied. Under the Reserve Bank – Integrated Ombudsman Scheme, 2026, in force from 1 July 2026, file within 90 days of the end of the issuer's 30-day reply period or its last reply, whichever is later.
  3. If the merchant refuses a cashback it clearly promised, approach the National Consumer Helpline or a consumer commission.

Worked example: a capped 5% card

Rohan's card offers 5% cashback on online spends, capped at ₹1,500 per statement, 1% on other spends, and nothing on wallet loads. In one cycle he spent the following. All figures are illustrative.

Spend Amount Rate Cashback
Online shopping ₹40,000 5%, capped 5% × 40,000 = ₹2,000, capped at ₹1,500
Offline groceries ₹8,000 1% ₹80
Wallet load ₹3,000 Excluded ₹0
Total ₹51,000 ₹1,580

His statement showed ₹1,500. The ₹1,500 cap was correct, but the ₹80 on groceries was missing. That is the part worth a request. Later he returned a ₹4,000 online order, and the bank reversed 5% × ₹4,000 = ₹200, leaving ₹1,300 of online cashback. But on his remaining ₹36,000 of online spends, 5% is ₹1,800, still above the ₹1,500 cap, so arguably nothing needed to be reversed. Issuers handle reversals on capped cards differently, so ask for the calculation in writing when the numbers do not add up.

Effective return: ₹1,580 ÷ ₹51,000 = about 3.1%, not the 5% on the card's advertisement.

Cashback only makes sense if you pay the full bill. Carrying ₹20,000 for one month at about 3.5% costs ₹700 in interest plus ₹126 GST, more than half of Rohan's capped cashback. Check your own case with our credit card interest calculator.

Sample complaint

Subject: Cashback not credited - card ending [XXXX], statement [month]

Dear Sir/Madam,

The cashback due on the following transaction(s) on my card ending
[XXXX] has not been credited:

- [Date], [Merchant], Rs [amount], expected cashback Rs [amount]
under [card cashback rule / offer name and terms link]

The posting period stated in the terms ([X] days / next statement)
has passed. These transactions are not in any excluded category
in the MITC. Request reference: [ref].

Please credit the cashback, or tell me in writing which term
excludes it and how the amount was calculated. If this is not
resolved within 30 days, I will approach the RBI Ombudsman.

What not to do

  • Do not click links in messages offering to "release" pending cashback. Banks credit cashback automatically; they never need an OTP, PIN or card number to do it.
  • Do not make extra purchases or split payments to chase a cap you have already reached.
  • Do not cancel the card while a cashback dispute is open; unpaid cashback is often forfeited on closure.
  • Do not take the dispute to the bank if the merchant promised the cashback. You will lose time; go to the merchant first.

Key takeaways

  • Most missing cashback is either not yet posted, capped, excluded or a merchant offer the bank does not fund.
  • Read the MITC and offer terms, then raise a request with the transaction details and proof.
  • As of October 2026, RBI sets no daily compensation for late cashback, but issuers must follow their published terms.
  • Escalate in order: card app, grievance officer, nodal officer, then the RBI Ombudsman at cms.rbi.org.in after 30 days.
  • Work out your effective cashback rate; caps often bring a headline 5% down to around 3%.

Frequently asked questions

When is credit card cashback credited?

On most cashback cards it is credited to the card account in the next statement or within a stated period after the billing cycle, often a few days to a few weeks. Offer cashback from a sale or partner promotion can take up to 90 days. The exact timeline is in the card's terms or the offer page.

Why did I get less cashback than I expected?

The usual reasons are a monthly cap on cashback, a minimum transaction amount, excluded categories such as rent, fuel, wallet loads or insurance, a merchant coded under a different category, or a purchase converted to EMI. Check the card's MITC and the offer terms.

Is an instant discount the same as cashback?

No. An instant discount is taken off the price at checkout. Cashback is credited to your card later. Some sale offers are 'deferred cashback', so if you expected a discount at checkout and did not see one, read the offer terms before raising a complaint.

What happens to cashback if I return the product?

The cashback is normally reversed, either by debiting it back or by refunding you only the net amount. If both the full refund and a reversal hit your card, check the arithmetic carefully.

Can I complain to RBI if my cashback is not credited?

Yes, after first complaining to the card issuer. If the issuer does not reply within 30 days or you are not satisfied, you can file with the RBI Ombudsman at cms.rbi.org.in. If the cashback was promised by a merchant or platform, not the bank, take it up with that merchant or the National Consumer Helpline.
