UPI Refund Not Received? Timelines, Compensation, Steps
UPI refund not received? Find out which refund type you are waiting for, the RBI T+1 and T+5 deadlines, the ₹100 a day compensation and how to escalate.

In this article
"The order was cancelled a week ago and the refund still hasn't come back to my account." If that is you, the fix starts with one question: is this a failed transaction or a merchant refund? A failed UPI payment must be reversed by RBI's deadline (T+1 or T+5 days) with ₹100 a day compensation if late, while a refund for a cancelled order depends on the merchant starting it, so you chase the merchant first and the bank second.
Most refunds that look lost are simply stuck in one of these two queues. This guide shows how to tell which one, what you are owed as of October 2026, and how to escalate calmly. If the payment failed outright, our guide on UPI payment failed but money debited goes deeper on that case.
First, identify which refund you are waiting for
| What happened | Who owes you the money | Deadline (as of October 2026) | Compensation if late |
|---|---|---|---|
| Payment to a person failed, but your account was debited | Your bank and the beneficiary bank | Auto-reversal by T+1 day | ₹100 per day beyond T+1 |
| Payment to a merchant failed (merchant shows "not received") | Your bank and the merchant's bank | Auto-reversal within T+5 days | ₹100 per day beyond T+5 |
| Order cancelled, item returned, or booking refunded | The merchant | Merchant's refund policy, then a few working days in the banking system | No RBI ₹100/day rule; consumer law applies |
| Merchant says "refund processed" but no credit | Trace through the merchant's bank and yours | Depends on where it is stuck | Depends on the cause |
| Money sent to the wrong person by mistake | The recipient, who must agree to return it | No fixed deadline | None |
"T" is the calendar day of the transaction. These limits come from RBI's circular on harmonisation of turnaround time and customer compensation for failed transactions (September 2019), which NPCI applies to UPI. They are outer limits; most failed payments reverse within hours. The circular also says compensation must be credited suo moto, meaning without waiting for you to claim it.
For the last row, see UPI paid to the wrong person, because that is a recovery request, not a refund.
Step-by-step: what to do
In the first hour
- Check the status inside your UPI app. Open the transaction. If it shows "Failed" or "Pending", it is a failed-transaction case. If it shows "Successful" and the merchant later cancelled the order, it is a merchant refund case.
- Check your bank statement, not just the app. Sometimes the refund has already landed but the app has not updated. Look for a credit with the same amount or a reference that matches the original UPI reference number (often called UTR or RRN).
- Note the details. Save the 12-digit UPI reference number, date, time, amount, merchant name and any order ID.
- Ignore anyone offering "refund help" by phone. Fake refund agents are one of the most common UPI tricks. You never need to enter a PIN to receive money.
On the first day
- For a failed transaction: wait until the deadline (T+1 for a transfer, T+5 for a merchant payment) unless the app says the money has gone to the beneficiary. If it has not reversed by then, raise a dispute through the app's "Help" or "Raise a complaint" option on that transaction.
- For a merchant refund: contact the merchant through its order page or support and ask three things: has the refund been initiated, on what date, and what is the refund reference number. A refund reference is the single most useful thing you can get.
- Give the refund reference to your bank or app support if the merchant says it has been sent and nothing has arrived after five working days.
If it is still unresolved
- Escalate in the UPI system. NPCI's dispute redressal order is: the UPI app you used, then its partner (PSP) bank, then your own bank, then NPCI. Each level must update the complaint status in the app.
- Write to your bank's grievance or nodal officer with all reference numbers. Details are on the bank's website under "Grievance redressal".
- Go to the RBI Ombudsman at cms.rbi.org.in (helpline 14448) if the bank rejects your complaint or does not reply within 30 days. Under the RBI Integrated Ombudsman Scheme, 2026, in force from 1 July 2026, you must file within 90 days of the bank's last reply or its response deadline, whichever is later. See what to do when the bank is not resolving your complaint.
- For a merchant that refuses to refund after a valid cancellation, you can also approach the National Consumer Helpline (1915) or a consumer commission.
Worked example: counting the compensation
Priya paid ₹2,499 to an online store by UPI on 3 October. Her account was debited, but the store showed "payment failed" and no order was created. The money was finally reversed on 12 October.
- This is a failed merchant payment, so the deadline is T+5: 3 October + 5 days = 8 October.
- Reversal was concluded on 12 October, which is 4 days beyond the deadline (9, 10, 11 and 12 October).
- Compensation owed: 4 × ₹100 = ₹400, which the bank should credit on its own.
If it had been a failed transfer to a friend instead, the deadline would have been 4 October and the delay 8 days, so ₹800. If no compensation appears, cite the circular in your complaint and ask for it.
Now compare: Rahul cancelled a ₹2,499 order on 3 October. The merchant's policy says refunds are initiated within 7 days, and the merchant initiated it on 9 October. The money reached his account on 11 October. No RBI compensation is due, because the payment never failed. If the merchant had delayed beyond its stated policy, his remedy would be the merchant's grievance officer or consumer law.
Money stuck for a week rarely costs much in lost interest on its own. On ₹2,499 at 7% a year, a week is about ₹3, which you can check with any FD calculator. The real cost is your time, which is why the compensation rule exists.
Your rights in plain words
- Failed UPI transactions must be reversed within T+1 (transfers) or T+5 (merchant payments), with ₹100 a day for delay, paid automatically. If your card was used instead of UPI, card payments at shops and online have a T+5 limit with the same ₹100 a day rule.
- The bank cannot ask you to chase the beneficiary bank. Your bank is your point of contact.
- The Ombudsman can award compensation for financial loss up to ₹30 lakh and up to ₹3 lakh for loss of time, expenses and harassment under the 2026 scheme, but you must complain to the bank first.
- Merchant refunds are governed by the merchant's policy and consumer protection law, not RBI's failed transaction rules. Once the merchant sends the refund, banks still have to credit it promptly, and a stuck credit can be traced using the reference number.
- Payments made by credit card through UPI follow the card dispute route. If a merchant refuses, our guide to credit card chargeback vs refund explains how to dispute through the card issuer.

refund reference [number], but the amount has not been credited.
Please reverse/trace the amount and credit any compensation due under the

What not to do
- Do not share your UPI PIN, OTP or card details with anyone promising to speed up a refund.
- Do not install screen-sharing or remote-access apps at a caller's request.
- Do not search the web for a "UPI customer care number". Use only the help section inside your app or your bank's official website.
- Do not scan a QR code or approve a request to "receive" a refund. Receiving money never needs your PIN.
- Do not make the payment again until you know whether the first one failed or succeeded. You may end up paying twice.
- Do not raise duplicate complaints in five places at once. One complaint with a clear reference number moves faster; escalate in order.
- Do not miss the Ombudsman window. The 90-day limit under the 2026 scheme is much shorter than the old one year.
If you suspect the "refund" request itself was a scam, follow our guide on UPI scams and what to do immediately.
Key takeaways
- Decide first whether it is a failed transaction or a merchant refund; the deadlines and remedies differ.
- Failed UPI transfers: reversal by T+1. Failed merchant payments: within T+5. Delay beyond that earns ₹100 a day, credited automatically, as of October 2026.
- For merchant refunds, get the refund reference number; it is the key to tracing a stuck credit.
- Escalate in order: UPI app, bank, grievance officer, then RBI Ombudsman at cms.rbi.org.in within 90 days.
- Never enter a PIN or share an OTP to "receive" a refund.
Frequently asked questions
How long does a UPI refund take?
It depends on the type. A failed person-to-person UPI transfer must be reversed by T+1 day and a failed merchant payment by T+5 days under RBI's 2019 turnaround time rules. A refund for a cancelled order or return depends on when the merchant starts it, and usually reaches your account within a few working days after that.
Do I get compensation if my UPI refund is late?
For failed UPI transactions, yes. RBI's rules require ₹100 for every day of delay beyond T+1 for transfers and beyond T+5 for merchant payments, credited without you having to ask. A voluntary merchant refund after a cancellation is not covered by this rule.
The merchant says the refund is done but I have not received it. What should I do?
Ask the merchant for the refund reference number or RRN and the date it was sent. Give that number to your bank or UPI app support, which can trace whether the credit reached your account or is stuck with another bank.
Where do I complain if my UPI refund is not received after many days?
Raise a dispute in your UPI app first, then complain to your bank. If the bank does not resolve it within 30 days or rejects it, file with the RBI Ombudsman at cms.rbi.org.in within 90 days of the bank's reply or response deadline, whichever is later.
Someone called offering to help with my UPI refund. Is that safe?
No. Banks and UPI apps never ask for your UPI PIN, OTP or a screen-sharing app to send a refund. You never need to enter a PIN to receive money. Hang up and use only the help section inside your app.
