Close FD Linked Credit Card: Lien Removal and FD Release
How to close an FD linked credit card: clear dues, request closure, get the lien removed and free your FD. RBI timelines, ₹500/day penalty and score impact.

In this article
To close an FD linked credit card, pay every rupee you owe including unbilled transactions, request closure through any official channel, and then ask the bank to remove the lien on your fixed deposit. Under RBI's credit card directions the bank must close the card within seven working days of your request once dues are clear, or pay you ₹500 for each day of delay. After the lien is removed, the FD is yours to keep running, withdraw early or let mature.
This guide walks through each step as of October 2026. For how these cards work in the first place, see our pillar guide to the credit card against FD.
Before you close: should you?
Closing a secured card makes sense if you have moved to an unsecured card, need the deposit for something else, or the card now carries an annual fee you do not want. It may not make sense if:
- It is your only card. Your credit file can go quiet, and a thin file is harder to score.
- It is your oldest account. Closing it can reduce the average age of your accounts over time. Read should you close your oldest credit card.
- Your other cards carry high balances. Losing this limit raises your overall utilisation.
If your goal is an unsecured card, ask the bank whether it can upgrade you instead. An upgrade may let you keep a card open while the bank releases the deposit.
Step-by-step: closing the card and freeing the FD
- Download your latest statement and check unbilled transactions. Recent purchases may not be on the statement yet. Closure is possible only when the total outstanding is zero.
- Cancel standing instructions on the card. Move subscriptions, utility auto-pay and wallet links to another payment method, or they may post fresh charges after you pay off the card.
- Use or forfeit reward points. Points generally lapse on closure. Redeem them first if they are worth anything.
- Pay the full outstanding, including any EMI balance. Card EMIs are usually foreclosed on closure, and a foreclosure fee plus GST may apply as per the card terms.
- Request closure through any channel. RBI's card directions say an issuer cannot insist on a request by post. The app, net banking, helpline, IVR or email should all work. Note the request date and reference number.
- Ask for lien removal in the same request. Some banks release the lien automatically after closure; others need a separate instruction. State what you want done with the FD: keep it running, close it, or credit the proceeds to your savings account.
- Collect a closure confirmation and a no-dues letter. Keep these with the FD receipt.
- Check your credit report after about 30 to 45 days. The card should show as closed with a zero balance. RBI's card directions require closure information to be updated with credit bureaus within 30 days.
Timelines and what you are owed
| Stage | Who acts | Timeline as of October 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Closure after a valid request with no dues | Card issuer | Within 7 working days |
| Delay beyond 7 working days | Card issuer | ₹500 per calendar day to you, if nothing is outstanding |
| Lien removal on the FD | Bank | No fixed RBI timeline; set by each bank, often a few working days |
| Closure reported to credit bureaus | Card issuer | Within 30 days of closure |
| Credit balance left on the card | Card issuer | Must be transferred to your bank account on closure |
If the bank does not close the card or release the FD, write to its grievance officer with your reference number. If there is no satisfactory reply within 30 days, you can complain to the RBI Integrated Ombudsman at cms.rbi.org.in. Our guide on what to do when a credit card closure is not processed has a complaint template.
What happens to the FD after the lien is removed
You have three choices:
- Let it run to maturity. You earn the full contracted rate with no penalty. This is often the best option if you do not need the money now.
- Break it early. Banks usually charge a premature withdrawal penalty, commonly 0.5% to 1% off the rate, and pay interest at the rate applicable for the period the deposit actually ran. Rules differ by bank; see our guide to the FD premature withdrawal penalty.
- Pledge it elsewhere. You could use it as security for a loan against FD if you need short-term money without breaking it.
FD interest is taxable at your slab rate in the year it accrues, whether or not the card is open. TDS may be deducted above the threshold, and you can submit the relevant declaration if your total income is below the taxable limit.
Worked example: closing early vs waiting for maturity
Rohan opened a 2-year FD of ₹60,000 at an assumed 7% a year to back a card. After 14 months he gets an unsecured card and closes the FD card. All figures are illustrative and use simple interest to keep the math clear; real FDs usually compound quarterly.
Option A: break the FD at 14 months
- Rate applicable for a 1-year deposit at his bank (assumed): 6.5%
- Premature penalty: 1%
- Effective rate: 6.5% − 1% = 5.5%
- Interest: ₹60,000 × 5.5% × 14 ÷ 12 = ₹3,850
Option B: let the FD run to 24 months
- Interest: ₹60,000 × 7% × 2 = ₹8,400
Waiting 10 more months earns him ₹8,400 − ₹3,850 = ₹4,550 more. If he needs the money now, a loan against the FD might be cheaper than breaking it, depending on the loan rate. Check your own numbers with our FD calculator.
Now suppose Rohan forgets a ₹1,200 subscription that posts after he paid the card off. The card cannot close until that amount is cleared, the seven-working-day clock does not run while dues are outstanding, and the lien stays on the full FD. This is why step 2 matters.
Common problems and fixes
| Problem | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Closure request rejected | Small unbilled or interest amount left | Ask for the exact payoff figure, pay it, request again |
| Card closed but FD still under lien | Separate lien-removal step not triggered | Raise a written request quoting the closure reference |
| Annual fee charged after request | Delay in processing | Ask for reversal and claim ₹500/day if past 7 working days |
| Card still shows as active on credit report | Bureau not yet updated | Wait 30 days, then raise a dispute with the bureau |
| FD auto-renewed while card was open | Standard renewal for security | You can close the renewed FD after lien removal; penalty rules apply |
Key takeaways
- Clear every rupee including unbilled charges and cancel auto-pays before requesting closure.
- RBI requires closure within seven working days of a valid request, or ₹500 a day to you, as of October 2026.
- Lien removal follows the bank's own timeline, so ask for it in writing and keep a reference number.
- Letting the FD run to maturity often earns more than breaking it; in our example the difference was ₹4,550.
- Check your credit report about a month after closure to confirm the card shows as closed.
Frequently asked questions
How do I close a credit card that is linked to an FD?
Pay the full outstanding including unbilled transactions, use or forfeit reward points, then request closure through the bank's app, net banking, helpline or email. After closure, the bank removes the lien and the FD becomes free to keep, withdraw or let mature.
How long does it take to release the FD after closing the card?
There is no single RBI timeline for lien removal. The card itself must be closed within seven working days of your request once dues are paid; banks then release the lien on their own schedule, which some state as a few working days. Ask for the timeline and a reference number.
Will the bank pay me if it delays closing my FD card?
Under RBI's credit card directions, if the issuer does not close the card within seven working days of a valid request with no dues outstanding, it must pay you ₹500 for each calendar day of delay until the account is closed.
Can I break the FD without closing the credit card?
Usually not. The FD is under lien as security for the card, so the bank will not let you withdraw it while the card is active. Some banks let you reduce the lien if you accept a lower limit.
Does closing a secured credit card reduce my CIBIL score?
It can lower your score a little if it raises your utilisation on other cards or removes your oldest account. If the FD card is your only card, consider getting another card first so your credit file stays active.
