You can get a credit card without income proof in India, and the most dependable way is a secured card against a fixed deposit, which banks usually issue without salary slips, ITRs or a credit history. Other options are an add-on card on a family member's account, a student card (usually also FD-backed), or an offer from a bank where you already hold a savings account. What you cannot skip is KYC, and any offer that promises a card for an upfront fee with no checks at all is a red flag.

All rules and figures here are as of October 2026. For a full guide to FD-backed cards, see our pillar article on the credit card against FD.

Why banks ask for income proof in the first place

An unsecured credit card is a loan with no collateral. RBI's credit card directions expect issuers to assess a customer's credit risk and repayment capacity before issuing a card and setting a limit. Income documents are how most banks do that.

Remove the risk, and the need for income proof largely goes away. That is what a fixed deposit does.

Your options at a glance

Option Income proof Builds your own credit history Spending power Main catch
Credit card against FD Usually not needed Yes 75% to 100% of the FD Money locked under lien
Student card Usually not needed Yes Small, usually FD-linked Needs an FD in most cases
Add-on card Not needed for you Not reliably Shares the primary card's limit Primary cardholder is liable
Relationship or pre-approved offer Sometimes waived Yes Bank decides Not available to everyone

Option 1: credit card against FD

You open an FD with the bank, it marks a lien, and you get a card with a limit linked to the deposit. Minimum FD amounts commonly range from about ₹5,000 to ₹50,000 depending on the bank and card. These cards suit:

  • Homemakers with savings but no salary.
  • Freelancers and gig workers with irregular or undocumented income.
  • Retirees whose pension may not meet a bank's income criteria.
  • First-time borrowers with no credit file.

The FD keeps earning interest. If you stop paying the card, the bank can adjust the dues against it, but the default is still reported to credit bureaus. Read how the limit is calculated in our guide to the FD credit card limit.

Option 2: student cards

In India, a card branded for students is usually a secured card against an FD, sometimes with a lower minimum deposit or a simpler application. You need to be at least 18 and complete KYC. Bank pages commonly describe limits at 80% to 100% of the deposit, as of October 2026.

If a parent funds the FD, it should still be in the student's name (or a joint name the bank accepts), because the card must be in the applicant's name.

Option 3: add-on cards

An add-on card is issued on the primary cardholder's account, usually to a spouse, parent, child or sibling. You get a card in your name, but:

  • The primary cardholder is liable for every rupee spent on the add-on card, under RBI's card rules.
  • The limit is shared. Spending on the add-on reduces what the primary cardholder can use.
  • Your own credit file may not benefit. The account belongs to the primary holder, so do not rely on an add-on to build your score.

An add-on is a convenient way to give a family member spending access. It is not a substitute for your own card if your goal is a credit history. Our first credit card guide explains how to start your own record.

Option 4: relationship and pre-approved offers

Some banks offer cards to existing customers based on internal data such as account balances, deposits, or past loans, and may waive income documents for these offers. Look in the cards section of your bank's app or net banking for anything labelled pre-approved. These offers are at the bank's discretion and you cannot demand one.

What you still need

Income proof can be skipped; identity checks cannot.

  • PAN card (or the bank's accepted alternative where PAN is not available).
  • Aadhaar or another officially valid document for address and identity.
  • A photograph and signature, often captured digitally.
  • A savings account with the bank for some FD cards.
  • Age of 18 or more for a primary card.

Worked example: a student's FD card

Sana, 19, has saved ₹25,000 from gifts and part-time tutoring but has no salary slip. She opens a 1-year FD of ₹25,000 at an assumed 6.5% and gets a card with a 90% limit. All figures are illustrative.

  • Credit limit: 90% × ₹25,000 = ₹22,500
  • Planned monthly spend: ₹5,000 (phone recharge, books, travel pass)
  • Utilisation: ₹5,000 ÷ ₹22,500 = 22.2%, comfortably under the 30% guideline
  • FD interest for a year: ₹25,000 × 6.5% = ₹1,625 before tax

Now compare the cost if she misses paying ₹5,000 in full for one month, at an assumed 3.5% a month:

  • Interest: ₹5,000 × 3.5% = ₹175
  • GST at 18%: ₹175 × 18% = ₹31.50
  • Total of about ₹206.50, plus a possible late fee and a late mark on her credit report

That single missed payment wipes out about 13% of a year's FD interest (₹206.50 ÷ ₹1,625). See projections for other amounts with our FD calculator.

Traps to avoid

Trap How it looks What to do instead
Upfront fee for approval "Pay ₹999 processing fee and get a card without documents" Genuine banks do not charge to approve a card; apply only through official channels
OTP or KYC phishing Call or link asking for OTP, PIN or CVV to "activate" a card Never share these; report at cybercrime.gov.in or call 1930
Unknown lending apps Apps offering a "credit line card" with heavy permissions Check the lender is an RBI-regulated bank or NBFC and listed on the app's partner page
Unsolicited cards A card arrives that you did not request RBI rules prohibit unsolicited cards; report and refuse activation
Locking emergency money Putting your only savings into the FD Keep a separate cash buffer you can access quickly

Key takeaways

  • A credit card against an FD is the most reliable way to get a card without income proof, and most banks issue one without salary slips or ITR.
  • KYC with PAN and Aadhaar or another valid document is still compulsory, and you must be 18 or older.
  • Add-on cards give spending access but leave the liability with the primary cardholder and may not build your own score.
  • In our illustrative example, a ₹25,000 FD gave a ₹22,500 limit, and one missed full payment cost about ₹206.50 in interest and GST.
  • Ignore any offer that asks for an upfront fee, OTP or PIN to approve a card.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a credit card without income proof in India?

Yes. The most reliable way is a secured credit card against a fixed deposit, which most banks issue without salary slips or ITR because the deposit secures the limit. An add-on card on a family member's account is another option.

Is KYC needed for a credit card without income proof?

Yes. Income proof can be waived, but KYC cannot. You will still need PAN and an officially valid document such as Aadhaar, and you must be at least 18 years old for your own card.

Can a student get a credit card without a job?

Usually only as a secured card against an FD, or as an add-on on a parent's card. Student-branded cards from banks are generally FD-backed, with the limit set as a percentage of the deposit.

Does an add-on credit card build my own CIBIL score?

Not reliably. The account belongs to the primary cardholder, who is liable for all dues, and reporting of add-on usage to the add-on holder's credit file varies. If your goal is your own credit history, a card in your own name works better.

Are 'no document credit card' offers on social media genuine?

Be very careful. Genuine banks never ask for an upfront fee to approve a card, and never ask for your OTP, PIN or CVV. Treat any such offer as a likely scam and apply only through the bank's own website, app or branch.
