UPI on RuPay Credit Card: How It Works, Limits and Rewards
UPI on RuPay credit card explained: how to link it, where you can pay, limits, rewards, merchant MDR, interest-free days and safety rules as of October 2026.

In this article
UPI on a RuPay credit card lets you pay merchants by scanning any UPI QR code, but the money comes from your credit limit instead of your bank account. You link the card in a UPI app, set a separate UPI PIN, and pay like any other UPI payment; the amount appears on your card statement with the usual interest-free period. It works only with RuPay credit cards, only for merchant payments, and rewards depend on your issuer.
How it works
The RBI allowed RuPay credit cards to be linked to UPI in 2022, and NPCI built the feature for person-to-merchant (P2M) payments.
- Add the card: In a UPI app, choose to add a RuPay credit card, select your issuer, and enter the last six digits and expiry date.
- Verify: Confirm with the OTP sent to the mobile number registered with your card.
- Set a UPI PIN: This PIN is separate from your card PIN and from your bank account UPI PIN.
- Pay: Scan a merchant's QR code, choose the credit card as the source, and enter the UPI PIN.
The transaction is billed like a normal card purchase. It shows on your statement and is due on your regular due date.
What you can and cannot do
| Feature | RuPay credit card on UPI | Bank account on UPI |
|---|---|---|
| Pay merchants (shops, online) | Yes | Yes |
| Send money to friends or family | Generally no | Yes |
| Cash withdrawal | No | Depends on bank and ATM |
| Where the money comes from | Your credit limit | Your bank balance |
| When you pay | By the card due date | Immediately |
| Rewards | Issuer decides | Usually none |
| Customer charges | None for merchant payments | None |
Some small merchants accept UPI only to their personal savings account through a "personal" QR code. A RuPay credit card payment to such a QR may fail, because it is treated as a person-to-person transfer.
Limits as of October 2026
- Per transaction: Most merchant payments follow the general UPI limit of ₹1 lakh per transaction. NPCI allows higher limits for certain categories such as insurance, capital markets and some large payments, but your issuer and app may apply lower limits on credit cards.
- Credit limit: You cannot spend more than your available credit limit, whatever the UPI limit.
- New link: Many banks apply a small cap, reported at around ₹5,000, for the first 24 hours after you link a card or set a new PIN.
- Daily count: UPI apps and banks also set limits on the number and total value of transactions per day.
Check the limits shown in your card issuer's app, since they vary by bank and card variant.
Charges and MDR
You pay nothing extra to use a RuPay credit card on UPI for a merchant payment. Costs, if any, fall on the merchant.
- MDR (merchant discount rate) is a fee the merchant's bank charges for accepting a payment. For RuPay credit cards on UPI, small transactions up to ₹2,000 at small merchants have been kept free of MDR, while larger card payments can carry an MDR paid by the merchant. Reported rates for larger RuPay credit card payments are roughly in line with card MDR, but rates vary by acquirer and merchant category.
- Bank-account UPI: NPCI announced a 0.4% MDR on specified merchant (P2M) UPI payments above ₹2,000, capped at ₹300, with small merchants and payments up to ₹2,000 exempt. It was due from 15 October 2026 but was reported in October 2026 to be deferred until after the festive season, so check NPCI for the current start date. Either way, users are not charged.
Merchants are not supposed to pass MDR on to you as a surcharge. If a shop insists on an extra percentage for using a credit card on UPI, you can decline and pay another way, and report it to your bank.
Rewards on UPI payments
Rewards are set by each issuer, not by NPCI or RBI:
- Some cards give their normal reward rate on UPI merchant payments.
- Some give a lower rate on UPI, or cap UPI rewards each month.
- Fuel, rent, wallet loads, utilities, insurance, education and government payments are often excluded or capped, as they are with card swipes.
- A few cards are designed around UPI and give accelerated rewards on UPI spends.

Worked example: the benefit, and the cost of carrying a balance
Illustrative. Kavya links a RuPay credit card to UPI and moves ₹15,000 a month of grocery and small-shop payments to it. Her card gives 1% value on UPI merchant payments.
If she pays in full:
- Rewards: ₹15,000 × 1% = ₹150 a month, or ₹150 × 12 = ₹1,800 a year.
- Interest-free time: Her statement is generated on the 20th and the due date is the 10th of the next month. A payment made on the 21st of one month is due on the 10th of the month after next, about 50 days later. A payment made on the 19th is due in about 22 days.
If she pays only part of one month's bill:
Suppose she leaves ₹15,000 unpaid for one month on a card charging 3.5% a month.
- Interest: ₹15,000 × 3.5% = ₹525.
- GST on interest: ₹525 × 18% = ₹94.50.
- Cost for one month: ₹619.50.
That one month of revolving costs more than four months of rewards (₹619.50 ÷ ₹150 ≈ 4.1). Most issuers also withdraw the interest-free period on new purchases while a balance is outstanding, so the real cost can be higher. Check your numbers with the credit card interest calculator, and read how credit card interest works and the credit card billing cycle.
Safety: how to use it without losing money
- Never enter your UPI PIN to receive money. A PIN is needed only to pay. Fraudsters send "collect requests" pretending you will receive a refund or prize.
- Do not share OTPs sent during card linking. Anyone who links your card to their phone can spend from your limit.
- Turn off what you do not use. Most issuer apps let you enable or disable UPI on the card and set lower limits.
- Check alerts. Every UPI card transaction should trigger an SMS or email. Report any you do not recognise immediately.
- Report fraud quickly. Under RBI rules on customer liability, your liability for unauthorised electronic transactions is zero if the fault lies with the bank or a third party and you report within three working days. Delayed reporting increases your liability. Block the card in the app, inform the issuer, and report online fraud at cybercrime.gov.in or on the 1930 helpline.
Watch your credit utilisation
Small UPI payments add up quickly. If your card has a ₹60,000 limit and you run ₹45,000 through it each month, your utilisation is 75%, which can pull your credit score down even if you pay in full. Keeping it below roughly 30% is commonly advised; see credit utilization ratio.
Key takeaways
- Only RuPay credit cards can be linked to UPI, and only for merchant payments, not transfers to friends.
- Customers pay no extra charge; any MDR is the merchant's cost and must not be passed on.
- Limits follow UPI rules, usually ₹1 lakh per transaction, but cannot exceed your available credit limit.
- Rewards on UPI spends vary by issuer and are often capped or excluded for some categories.
- Pay the full bill: in the example, one month of revolving ₹15,000 cost ₹619.50, more than four months of rewards.

Can I send money to a friend from a RuPay credit card on UPI?
