The e-Shram card is a free identity card for India's unorganised workers, carrying a 12-digit Universal Account Number (UAN) that links you to government welfare, insurance and pension schemes. Anyone aged 16 or above working in the unorganised sector, who is not in EPFO or ESIC and does not pay income tax, can register for free on eshram.gov.in or at a Common Service Centre (CSC). As of October 2026 the portal is active: it completed five years on 26 August 2026 with 31.89 crore registrations, according to a PIB release.

The card is a gateway, not a cash scheme. This guide explains what it actually gives you, how to register, and how to avoid the fake "e-Shram payment" websites.

What e-Shram is

The Ministry of Labour and Employment launched e-Shram on 26 August 2021 to build the National Database of Unorganised Workers, seeded with Aadhaar. On 21 October 2024 it became the e-Shram One-Stop Solution, which brings 15 social security and welfare schemes onto one platform, including:

  • Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY): accident cover
  • Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY): life cover
  • Pradhan Mantri Shram Yogi Maandhan (PM-SYM): pension
  • National Social Assistance Programme (NSAP), One Nation One Ration Card, PMAY-Gramin and others

It also links to the National Career Service for jobs, Skill India Digital Hub for training and apprenticeships, and myScheme to find schemes you may qualify for. Since 2025 the portal works in 22 languages.

Who can register (as of October 2026)

Who typically registers: agricultural labourers, construction workers, domestic and household workers, street vendors, migrant workers, gig and platform workers (delivery and ride-hailing partners), apparel and home-based workers, small shop helpers.

As of 18 August 2026, women made up 54.28% of registrations, and Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra had the most registrations.

What benefits you can actually get

Registration itself gives you the UAN card and a place in the national database. The real money benefits come from schemes you then enrol in:

Scheme via e-Shram What you pay What you get
PMSBY ₹20 a year ₹2 lakh accidental death or total disability; ₹1 lakh partial disability
PMJJBY ₹436 a year (age 18-50) ₹2 lakh on death from any cause
PM-SYM ₹55-₹200 a month (age 18-40), matched by government ₹3,000 a month pension from 60
Ration (ONORC), NSAP, PMAY-G and others As per scheme As per scheme eligibility

Governments also use the database to reach workers during emergencies and to share construction workers' data with state welfare boards, where registered building workers get state-specific benefits.

Gig and platform workers: the Code on Social Security, 2020 came into force on 21 November 2025 and recognises gig and platform workers for the first time, with a framework for social security schemes funded partly by aggregators. The Union Budget 2025-26 announced e-Shram registration, identity cards and healthcare under Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY for platform workers. As of October 2026, details of the aggregator contribution model were still being finalised, so check the portal for what has been notified. About 11.5 lakh platform workers had registered by August 2026.

Worked example: a ₹1,716-a-year safety net

Meena, 30, a domestic worker, registers on e-Shram for free and then enrols in three schemes through it:

  • PMSBY: ₹20 a year
  • PMJJBY: ₹436 a year
  • PM-SYM at age 30: ₹105 a month × 12 = ₹1,260 a year (government adds another ₹1,260)

Total she pays: ₹20 + ₹436 + ₹1,260 = ₹1,716 a year, about ₹143 a month.

What her family is protected for:

  • Death in an accident: ₹2 lakh (PMSBY) + ₹2 lakh (PMJJBY) = ₹4 lakh
  • Death from illness: ₹2 lakh (PMJJBY)
  • Old age: ₹3,000 a month from age 60 (PM-SYM), with ₹1,500 to her husband if she dies after pension starts

PMJJBY stops at 55 and PM-SYM's pension is fixed in rupees, so this is a basic floor rather than full protection.

How to register for the e-Shram card: step by step

  1. Open the official portal eshram.gov.in and choose the self-registration option (register.eshram.gov.in). Check the address carefully; it must end in .gov.in.
  2. Enter your Aadhaar-linked mobile number and the captcha, then verify the OTP.
  3. Enter your Aadhaar number and complete Aadhaar e-KYC with OTP (or biometrics at a CSC).
  4. Fill your details: address, education, occupation and skills, and family details (migrant workers can add family information).
  5. Add bank account details so scheme benefits come to your account.
  6. Submit and download your e-Shram (UAN) card as a PDF.

No smartphone? Go to the nearest CSC, State Seva Kendra or ask state field officers at district level. Most registrations in India are done through CSCs. Registration is free everywhere.

Download or update your e-Shram card later

Log in on eshram.gov.in with your registered mobile number and OTP, then use the update or download option to change your details (occupation, address, bank) or download the UAN card again. Keep your mobile number and bank account active; a closed bank account is a common reason benefits fail.

Fake e-Shram payment websites and agents

The most common confusion is the "e-Shram card payment status" or "₹1,000 / ₹3,000 every month" message. The e-Shram card does not pay a regular monthly amount to all holders. Some states have used the database for one-off payments in the past, but those are state decisions announced officially, not a central monthly transfer.

Red flags:

  • Websites that are not on eshram.gov.in asking for Aadhaar, bank details or OTP to "check payment".
  • Agents charging ₹100-₹500 for registration or a "new card". Registration is free.
  • Calls or messages asking for your OTP to "release" e-Shram money.

If you lost money, report at cybercrime.gov.in or call 1930 immediately. Read UPI scams: what to do for the steps.

Common problems and fixes

  • "Already registered in EPFO/ESIC": you are not eligible while you have active PF or ESIC coverage.
  • OTP not received: the mobile is not linked to Aadhaar. Use biometric e-KYC at a CSC.
  • Name or date of birth mismatch: correct Aadhaar first, then update e-Shram.
  • Bank account not seeded: benefits may fail. Update bank details on the portal and keep the account active (see PM Jan Dhan Yojana for a zero-balance account).

Where to complain

  1. e-Shram helpline 14434 (also listed as 1800-889-6811), 9 am to 6 pm daily including Sundays, as per the e-Shram FAQ.
  2. Online grievance: gms.eshram.gov.in.
  3. CPGRAMS (pgportal.gov.in), addressed to the Ministry of Labour and Employment, if unresolved.
  4. Scheme-specific issues: bank branch for PMSBY and PMJJBY, and 1800 267 6888 for PM-SYM.

Key takeaways

  • e-Shram is active as of October 2026, with 31.89 crore registrations; registration is free and gives a 12-digit UAN card.
  • Eligibility: unorganised workers aged 16+, not EPFO/ESIC members, not income tax payers. Aadhaar and mobile number are enough to start.
  • The card is a gateway to 15 schemes including PMSBY, PMJJBY and PM-SYM; it does not pay monthly cash by itself.
  • For about ₹1,716 a year a 30-year-old can get ₹4 lakh accident death cover, ₹2 lakh life cover and a ₹3,000 pension at 60.
  • Use only eshram.gov.in or a CSC; report fake "payment status" sites and OTP calls on 1930.

Frequently asked questions

What are the benefits of the e-Shram card?

The e-Shram card gives a 12-digit Universal Account Number (UAN) that identifies you as an unorganised worker. Through the e-Shram One-Stop Solution you can enrol in schemes such as PMSBY, PMJJBY and PM-SYM, and see welfare, job and skilling schemes you may be eligible for. The card itself does not pay a monthly amount.

Who can register on e-Shram?

Any unorganised sector worker aged 16 or above can register, including construction, domestic, agricultural, migrant, gig and platform workers and street vendors. You must not be an income tax payer or a member of EPFO or ESIC.

Is e-Shram registration free?

Yes. Registration on the e-Shram portal and at Common Service Centres is free of cost. Workers are not required to pay any fee to any registering agency or service provider.

Does the e-Shram card give ₹1,000 or ₹3,000 every month?

No. There is no regular cash payment to all e-Shram card holders. The ₹3,000 figure refers to the PM-SYM pension at age 60, which needs monthly contributions. Websites showing an e-Shram payment status for monthly cash are not official.

Which documents are needed for e-Shram registration?

Your Aadhaar number for e-KYC and a mobile number, preferably linked to Aadhaar. Bank account details are asked so that benefits can be paid directly to you.

Can gig workers like delivery partners register on e-Shram?

Yes. Gig and platform workers can register, and aggregators can also register their workers. About 11.5 lakh platform workers had registered by August 2026, according to PIB.
