"I paid off my gold loan last week, but the branch keeps saying my jewellery will come 'in a few days'." If that is you, here is the short answer: as of October 2026, RBI requires lenders to return pledged gold within seven working days of full repayment, and to pay you ₹5,000 for each day of delay that is their fault. Get a written closure or no-dues receipt today, ask for a release date in writing, and escalate to the grievance officer once the seventh working day passes.

Waiting for family jewellery is stressful, but in most cases the gold is safe and the delay is about where it is stored or a small amount still showing as due. This guide explains why it happens, what you are owed and how to get it back. For the full picture of how gold loans work, see our pillar gold loan guide.

Why it happens

Reason the lender gives What is usually going on What you can do
"Gold is in the central vault" Packets are stored at a hub, not at the branch Ask for the date it will reach the branch; the 7-day limit still applies
"A small amount is pending" Interest for the last few days, a charge or GST not included in your payoff figure Ask for an itemised statement; pay or dispute the exact amount
"Your other loan is still open" The lender wants to hold the gold against another loan Ask for the written clause allowing this
"The system has not updated" Repayment not yet marked as closure Give the payment reference; ask for a closure receipt
"Original receipt needed" You lost the pledge card or loan document Ask for the lost-document process (usually ID plus an undertaking)
"Borrower has died" Legal heir or nominee process Ask for the written list of documents
Branch closed, shifted or merged Gold moved to another branch Ask for the branch and a date in writing

Your rights under RBI rules (as of October 2026)

The Reserve Bank of India (Lending Against Gold and Silver Collateral) Directions, 2025 apply to banks, co-operative banks and NBFCs, and had to be in place by 1 April 2026. For release of gold, they say:

  • Seven working days: the lender must release the pledged gold or silver within seven working days of full repayment or settlement.
  • ₹5,000 a day: if the delay beyond that is attributable to the lender, it must pay you ₹5,000 for each day of delay.
  • Reasons for delay: if the delay is not the lender's fault, it should communicate the reason to you.
  • Loss or damage: the lender is liable to compensate you for loss of or damage to the gold while in its custody, or a mismatch in what is returned. If that is your situation, read our guide to gold loan jewellery damaged or missing.
  • Complaints: lenders must have a grievance redressal system, and you can then go to the RBI Integrated Ombudsman.

Some lenders release gold the same day you repay, which is the common practice for loans held at the branch. Seven working days is the outer limit, not the standard wait.

Step-by-step fix

On the day you repay

  1. Pay the full payoff amount stated by the lender for that day, including interest up to the payment date. Ask for the figure in writing or in the app before paying.
  2. Get a closure or no-dues receipt that shows the loan number, the amount paid and "closed". If you paid online, save the payment reference.
  3. Ask the release date in writing. A short email or a note on the receipt is enough. This starts your seven-working-day count.

Days 1 to 7

  1. Count working days, not calendar days. Skip Sundays, the second and fourth Saturdays for banks, and holidays at that branch.
  2. Follow up once by email around day four or five, quoting the loan number. Ask whether the gold is at the branch and whether anything is pending.
  3. Clear any genuine leftover amount immediately, after asking for an itemised breakdown. A tiny unpaid balance is the most common reason the release stalls.

After the seventh working day

  1. Write to the grievance redressal officer of the bank or NBFC. Its contact is on the lender's website and should be displayed at the branch. Quote the closure date, the seventh working day and the ₹5,000-a-day rule.
  2. Ask for compensation in the same letter, counted from the day after the seventh working day until the gold is returned.
  3. When you collect the gold, check every item against the pledge record before you sign. Note any damage, missing item or weight difference on the release form.
  4. File with the RBI Ombudsman at cms.rbi.org.in (helpline 14448) if the lender does not reply within 30 days, rejects your claim or does not pay the compensation. Under the Reserve Bank – Integrated Ombudsman Scheme, 2026, in force from 1 July 2026, file within 90 days of the end of the lender's 30-day reply period or its last reply, whichever is later. Filing is free, and the Ombudsman can award up to ₹30 lakh for consequential loss and up to ₹3 lakh for loss of time, expenses and harassment.

If you are thinking of repaying early or taking back only part of your jewellery, see our guide to gold loan prepayment and part release.

Worked example: counting the compensation

Sunita took a ₹1,20,000 gold loan from a bank against her bangles and a chain. She repaid it in full on Tuesday, 6 October 2026, and got a closure receipt. All figures are illustrative.

Finding the seventh working day:

Date Day Working day count
7 October Wednesday 1
8 October Thursday 2
9 October Friday 3
10 October Second Saturday (holiday) –
11 October Sunday –
12 October Monday 4
13 October Tuesday 5
14 October Wednesday 6
15 October Thursday 7 (deadline)

The bank returned her jewellery on Thursday, 22 October, saying the packet had to come from its regional vault. That is a delay attributable to the lender.

  • Days of delay: 16 to 22 October = 7 days
  • Compensation owed: 7 × ₹5,000 = ₹35,000

The same rule applies to an NBFC lender. Check working days against the lender's own holiday list, because state holidays differ. If the bank argues that the delay was not its fault, it must tell you why, and you can contest that reason before the Ombudsman.

Before she repaid, Sunita also compared whether converting the loan to EMIs would have been cheaper than a bullet payment. You can run that comparison with our EMI calculator.

Sample complaint letter

To: The Grievance Redressal Officer, [Bank/NBFC name]

Subject: Pledged gold not returned after full repayment – Gold loan account [number]

Dear Sir/Madam,

I repaid my gold loan account [number] in full on [date], payment reference [ref]. A closure receipt was issued on [date].

As of today, [date], my pledged gold ornaments ([brief description and gross weight as per pledge receipt]) have not been returned. The seventh working day after repayment was [date].

Under the RBI (Lending Against Gold and Silver Collateral) Directions, 2025, pledged gold must be released within seven working days of repayment, and a delay attributable to the lender attracts compensation of ₹5,000 per day.

Please (1) return my gold on or before [date], and (2) pay compensation of ₹5,000 per day from [day after deadline] until the date of return.

If this is not resolved within 30 days, I will file a complaint with the RBI Ombudsman.

What not to do

  • Do not repay without a closure receipt. Without proof of the date you repaid, your seven-day count is hard to prove.
  • Do not sign the release form before checking your gold. Once signed, it is much harder to claim a missing item or damage.
  • Do not take a fresh loan or "renewal" to get your gold back faster; it simply re-pledges it.
  • Do not hand your pledge receipt or ID to an agent who offers to collect the gold for a fee.
  • Do not wait months to complain. The Ombudsman window is 90 days after the lender's reply period.

Key takeaways

  • As of October 2026, lenders must return pledged gold within seven working days of full repayment.
  • If the delay is the lender's fault, it owes you ₹5,000 for each day of delay; in our example, seven days meant ₹35,000.
  • Get a closure receipt and a written release date the day you repay, and count working days from there.
  • Check every item and its weight against the pledge record before you sign for it.
  • Escalate to the grievance officer, then the RBI Ombudsman at cms.rbi.org.in after 30 days; banks and NBFCs are both covered.

Frequently asked questions

How many days does a lender have to return gold after a gold loan is repaid?

Under RBI's Lending Against Gold and Silver Collateral Directions, 2025, which lenders had to adopt by 1 April 2026, the pledged gold must be released within seven working days of full repayment or settlement of the loan.

What compensation do I get if my gold is returned late?

If the delay beyond seven working days is due to the lender, it must pay you ₹5,000 for each day of delay. If the delay is for a reason not attributable to the lender, it should tell you the reason.

Can the lender keep my gold for another loan I have with them?

Only if your loan documents give the lender that right and it has been disclosed to you. Ask the lender to show the clause in writing and give the details of the other dues. If no such right exists, the gold must be returned once the loan secured by it is repaid.

What should I check when I collect my gold?

Match the items, gross weight and description against your pledge receipt or loan document, check for damage, and do it at the counter before signing the release. Note any difference in writing. Lenders are liable to compensate for loss or damage to pledged gold.

Can a family member collect the gold if the borrower has died?

Yes, through the lender's process for legal heirs or nominees, which usually needs the death certificate, proof of relationship and the loan documents. Ask the lender for its written procedure and timeline.

Where do I complain if a bank or NBFC does not return my gold?

Write to the lender's grievance redressal officer first. If there is no reply in 30 days or you are not satisfied, file free with the RBI Ombudsman at cms.rbi.org.in within 90 days of that deadline or the lender's last reply, whichever is later. Banks and NBFCs are both covered.
