If anyone asks you to pay your loan EMI, overdue amount or "settlement" to a personal UPI ID, stop and verify before you pay. A genuine lender collects money into accounts in its own name, and RBI's Digital Lending Directions, 2025 require digital loan repayments to go directly into the regulated lender's bank account. Check the name behind the UPI ID, confirm the request with the lender through its official app or website, and pay only through those channels.

This guide explains how to verify a payment request, which channels are safe, and what to do if you have already paid. Rules are stated as of October 2026.

Why this request is a red flag

Fraudsters often have your loan details from leaked data or fake loan apps. They call as "recovery executives", quote your loan number and EMI amount, and push you to pay "today" to avoid "legal action", sometimes offering a big discount. Even a real agent who takes money into a personal account creates risk: the lender may never receive it.

Request Safe? Why
Pay in the lender's official app or website Yes Credited directly to your loan account
NACH or UPI AutoPay mandate registered with the lender Yes Mandate is in the lender's name
Payment link sent from the lender's registered SMS sender ID or email Usually, after checking Check the domain and payee name
Bharat BillPay / Bharat Connect biller for your lender Yes Lender is a registered biller
UPI ID or QR showing an individual's name No Money goes to a person, not the lender
"Pay half now to my number, rest after NOC" No Not a lender process
Cash without the lender's official receipt No No proof of repayment

What RBI rules say

  • Direct repayment to the lender. RBI's Digital Lending Directions, 2025 (paragraph 9) say loan servicing and repayment must be made by the borrower directly into the regulated lender's bank account, without any pass-through or pool account of a third party, including loan service providers.
  • Recovery agent details. For digital loans in default, the lender must tell you by email or SMS the details of the recovery agent authorised to contact you, before the agent contacts you.
  • Conduct of agents. RBI's recovery-agent instructions require agents to carry identity and authorisation, contact you only between 8 am and 7 pm, and avoid threats or contacting your relatives. See loan recovery agent harassment rights.
  • Upcoming framework. RBI's recovery framework issued on 6 August 2026 and effective 1 January 2027 asks lenders to publish their recovery agencies on their websites and tell borrowers the agency's details before the first visit, according to the published directions.

How to verify a payment channel in 5 minutes

1. Look at the name behind the UPI ID

Enter the UPI ID or scan the QR, but stop before entering your UPI PIN. Your app shows the registered name. It should be the lender's company name, often with a "verified merchant" mark. If you see a person's name, or a name unrelated to your lender, do not pay. Learn more in our guide on UPI QR code scams.

2. Check the lender's own channels

Open the lender's official app or website (typed in yourself, not from a link) and see your overdue amount and payment options there. If the agent's amount is different from what the app shows, trust the app.

3. Call the lender on its official number

Use the number on the lender's website or your loan agreement, not the one the caller gives you, and not one found through a search ad. Ask whether the agent and agency are authorised for your account, and what the payable amount is.

4. Ask for written proof

Ask the agent for an ID card, the lender's authorisation letter and a written demand on the lender's letterhead. A genuine settlement or waiver should come in writing from the lender before you pay.

5. Confirm the lender is regulated

If the "lender" is an app you are unsure about, check whether it appears in RBI's directory of digital lending apps or its list of regulated entities, and report unregulated entities at sachet.rbi.org.in. Our guide on fake loan app fraud explains how to report them.

Worked example: the "discount" trap

You have two overdue EMIs of ₹11,200 each on a personal loan. A caller says: "Pay ₹15,000 today to this UPI ID and your loan will be settled. Otherwise legal action tomorrow."

  • Actual overdue amount: 2 × ₹11,200 = ₹22,400, plus any bounce and penal charges in your KFS
  • If you pay ₹15,000 to a personal UPI ID and it is a scam, your overdue stays at ₹22,400 or more, and you lose ₹15,000
  • Total damage: ₹15,000 lost + ₹22,400 still due = ₹37,400 of money gone or owed

A real "settlement" also usually closes the account as "settled", which hurts your credit report. Use our EMI calculator to check your EMI and outstanding amount, and compare it with the lender's official statement.

If you already paid to a personal UPI ID

Act fast. The sooner you report, the better the chance of freezing the money.

  1. Call 1930 (National Cyber Crime Helpline) or report at cybercrime.gov.in, with the UPI ID, transaction ID, amount and time.
  2. Complain to your bank through its official app, branch or customer care, and raise a dispute on the transaction in your UPI app. Ask the bank to flag the receiving account.
  3. Inform the lender in writing with the screenshots and ask whether the payment reached your loan account.
  4. Keep paying through official channels. Until the lender confirms receipt, assume the EMI is still due.
  5. Escalate if your bank does not respond: after 30 days, file with the RBI Integrated Ombudsman at cms.rbi.org.in or call 14448. If the lender's own agent collected the money, complain to the lender's grievance officer; the lender is responsible for its agents. Our guide on cyber fraud money recovery covers the next steps.

Sample message to the lender:

Subject: Payment demanded to personal UPI ID, loan account [number]

On [date] at [time], a person named [name], calling from [number] and claiming to represent your company, asked me to pay ₹[amount] towards my loan account [number] to the UPI ID [ID], which shows the name [name]. Please confirm (a) whether this person and agency are authorised for my account, (b) the correct outstanding amount, and (c) your official payment channels. [If paid: I paid ₹[amount] on [date], UTR [number]. Please confirm whether it was credited to my loan account and take action against the person concerned.]

What not to do

  • Do not pay to any personal UPI ID or bank account, however genuine the caller sounds.
  • Do not share your OTP, UPI PIN, card number or net banking password; no lender needs them to receive your EMI.
  • Do not scan a QR code to "receive" a refund or waiver; scanning and entering a PIN always sends money.
  • Do not trust numbers from search results or WhatsApp profiles; use the lender's official website.
  • Do not install screen-sharing apps at a caller's request.
  • Do not ignore the real overdue; pay through official channels and keep receipts.

Key takeaways

  • A genuine lender collects EMIs into accounts in its own name; a personal UPI ID is a red flag.
  • Check the payee name in your UPI app before entering the PIN, and match it with the lender's app or website.
  • RBI's Digital Lending Directions, 2025 require digital loan repayments to go directly to the lender's account.
  • If you paid a fraudster, call 1930, complain to your bank and inform the lender in writing at once.
  • Escalate to the RBI Ombudsman after 30 days, and keep paying the real EMI through official channels.

Frequently asked questions

Can a recovery agent ask me to pay my EMI to his own UPI ID?

You should never pay a loan to an individual's personal UPI ID or bank account. RBI's Digital Lending Directions, 2025 require digital loan repayments to go directly into the regulated lender's own bank account, and lenders' official payment channels are always in the company's name.

How can I check if a UPI ID belongs to the lender?

Before entering your PIN, your UPI app shows the registered name behind the UPI ID or QR code. It should be the lender's company name, ideally marked as a verified merchant. Then match the payment method with the lender's official app, website or a written notice from its registered email.

I already paid to a personal UPI ID. What should I do?

Call 1930 or report at cybercrime.gov.in at once, raise a complaint with your bank, and inform the lender in writing with the transaction details. Keep paying your EMI through official channels, because the lender may not treat the money you sent as repayment.

Is a loan settlement offer on WhatsApp genuine?

Treat it as suspicious until the lender confirms it. A genuine settlement comes as a letter on the lender's letterhead or from its official email, and the payment goes to the lender's own account. Never pay a settlement amount to a personal UPI ID.

What official ways can I use to pay my EMI?

Your lender's app or website, NACH or UPI AutoPay mandate registered with the lender, branch payments, payment links sent from the lender's registered channels, or Bharat BillPay (Bharat Connect) in apps where your lender is listed as a biller.
