A low CIBIL score does not automatically shut you out of credit, but it changes which loans you can realistically get and how much they cost. The fastest routes are loans backed by your own assets (fixed deposits, gold, mutual funds), adding a co-applicant with a strong profile, or borrowing a smaller amount from a lender that knows you. Below is a step-by-step plan, the rules that protect you, and the traps that target people in exactly this situation.

Why a low score blocks loans

TransUnion CIBIL scores run from 300 to 900. Most banks look for roughly 750 or more for an unsecured personal loan at their best rates. Below about 700, approval gets harder and the rate offered goes up, and below about 650 many unsecured applications are rejected outright.

It is worth knowing what RBI has actually said. In 2025 the Finance Ministry told Parliament that RBI has not prescribed any minimum credit score for lending. RBI's Master Direction on credit information reporting (January 2025) also advises lenders not to reject first-time borrowers only because they have no credit history. In other words, the cut-off is the lender's own policy, not a law, and other evidence of repayment capacity can count.

Your situation What lenders usually see Most realistic options
Score 700–749 Acceptable with some risk Personal loan at a higher rate, your own bank
Score 650–699 Higher risk Smaller loan, co-applicant, secured loan
Score below 650 Recent defaults likely FD/gold/MF-backed loan, secured credit card
NH / NA (no history) Unknown, not bad Small loan from your salary bank, secured card

Step-by-step: how to get a loan with a low CIBIL score

1. Pull your full report before you apply

Every credit bureau (CIBIL, Experian, Equifax, CRIF High Mark) must give you one free full credit report a year. Read the account list, not just the score. Low scores are sometimes caused by a wrong overdue, a loan you closed that still shows open, or an account that is not yours. Fixing that is the cheapest way to raise your score; see our guide on disputing a CIBIL report error.

2. Borrow against something you own

Secured loans depend far less on your score:

  • Loan or overdraft against FD: banks typically lend up to about 90% of the deposit at a small margin over the FD rate.
  • Gold loan: under RBI's Lending Against Gold and Silver Collateral Directions, 2025, lenders can lend up to 85% of the gold's value for loans up to ₹2.5 lakh, and RBI said credit appraisal is not needed at that size.
  • Loan against mutual funds or shares: available online from many banks and NBFCs.

Our guides on gold loans and loans against FD and mutual funds cover rates and margins.

3. Add a co-applicant with a strong profile

A spouse, parent or sibling with a good score and steady income can make the joint application viable. Be honest with them: a co-applicant is equally liable for the full loan, and any missed EMI hurts their score too.

4. Approach your own bank first

The bank where your salary is credited sees your actual cash flow. It may offer a pre-approved or smaller loan where an outside lender would not. Ask about the rate in writing and check it against the Key Facts Statement (KFS), which RBI requires lenders to give before you sign a retail loan.

5. Ask for a smaller amount or a longer tenure

A lower EMI keeps your fixed obligations (FOIR) within the lender's limit, often 50% to 60% of net income. Borrowing ₹2 lakh instead of ₹4 lakh can turn a rejection into an approval.

6. Show proof beyond the score

Salary slips, six to twelve months of bank statements, ITRs, GST returns for the self-employed, and a letter explaining a one-time past default (job loss, medical emergency) all help a credit officer who has discretion.

7. Clear or regularise current overdues first

An account currently overdue is the biggest red flag. Paying off a small overdue amount, or bringing a loan back to regular status, often lifts the score within one or two reporting cycles because lenders now report data to bureaus far more often than they used to.

8. Build credit if you cannot wait

A secured credit card against an FD, used lightly and paid in full each month, builds a clean record within months.

Worked example: what a low score costs you

Suppose you borrow ₹3,00,000 for 3 years. Rates below are illustrative of what different credit profiles may be offered.

Rate offered Monthly EMI Total interest over 3 years
12% (good score) ₹9,964 ₹58,715
16% (average score) ₹10,547 ₹79,696
24% (low score, NBFC) ₹11,770 ₹1,23,715

The low-score borrower pays about ₹65,000 more in interest on the same ₹3 lakh. That is why it is usually worth either securing the loan or spending a few months repairing the score before taking a large unsecured loan. Run your own numbers with our EMI calculator.

Your rights as a borrower

  • No minimum score in law: RBI leaves the cut-off to lenders but expects a fair, documented credit decision.
  • Key Facts Statement: you must receive a KFS showing the annual percentage rate (APR), all fees and the repayment schedule before signing. Fees not in the KFS cannot be charged without your consent.
  • Digital lending protections: under RBI's Digital Lending Directions, the loan must be disbursed directly into your bank account by the regulated lender, and the app must disclose the lender's name.
  • Free credit report once a year from each bureau, plus SMS or email alerts when a lender pulls your report.
  • Fair recovery: RBI's rules limit recovery calls to 8 am to 7 pm and ban threats or abuse.

Where to complain

  1. Lender's grievance officer: write to the bank or NBFC first and keep the complaint number.
  2. RBI Integrated Ombudsman: if there is no reply within 30 days or you are not satisfied, file a free complaint at cms.rbi.org.in. The Reserve Bank – Integrated Ombudsman Scheme, 2026 (in force from 1 July 2026) generally expects the complaint within 90 days of the lender's reply or the end of its response period.
  3. Unregistered lenders or deposit-style schemes: report on sachet.rbi.org.in.
  4. Fraud, extortion or a fake loan app: call 1930 or file at cybercrime.gov.in immediately.

What not to do

  • Do not pay any "processing fee", "file charge" or "CIBIL repair fee" before a loan is sanctioned. Genuine lenders deduct fees from the disbursal and show them in the KFS.
  • Do not apply to many lenders in one week. Each hard enquiry is recorded and a burst of them makes you look desperate for credit.
  • Do not install apps that demand access to your contacts and photo gallery; this is the hallmark of illegal lending apps.
  • Do not take a high-cost loan to repay another without a plan; that is how a debt spiral starts.
  • Do not trust "guaranteed approval regardless of CIBIL" ads or agents who offer to edit your credit report. Only the lender that reported the data can correct it.

Key takeaways

  • RBI has not fixed a minimum CIBIL score; lenders decide under their own policies.
  • Secured loans against FD, gold or mutual funds are the most reliable route with a low score.
  • A strong co-applicant helps, but they become fully liable for the loan.
  • A low score can cost tens of thousands of rupees in extra interest, so compare the APR in the KFS.
  • Complain to the lender first, then the RBI Ombudsman at cms.rbi.org.in; report fraud to 1930.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a personal loan with a CIBIL score of 600?

It is possible but difficult. Most large banks prefer 700 to 750 or more for unsecured loans, so at 600 you are more likely to succeed with a secured loan such as a loan against FD or gold, or with a strong co-applicant.

Has RBI fixed a minimum CIBIL score for loans?

No. RBI has not prescribed a minimum credit score. Each lender sets its own cut-off under its board-approved credit policy, and the credit report is only one input in the decision.

Which loan is easiest to get with a bad credit score?

Loans backed by your own assets are the easiest: a loan or overdraft against a fixed deposit, a gold loan, or a loan against mutual funds. The collateral reduces the lender's risk, so the score matters much less.

Are instant loan apps safe if my CIBIL score is low?

Only if the app is a registered bank or NBFC, or works for one that is named in the app. Check the lender's name on the RBI website or Sachet portal, read the Key Facts Statement, and never pay an upfront fee to get a loan approved.

How quickly can a low CIBIL score improve?

Lenders now report to credit bureaus far more often than before, so on-time payments and lower card balances can show within a few weeks. Recovering from serious defaults or settlements usually takes many months of clean repayment.
