Mutual Fund KYC Status On Hold? Meanings and Fixes
Mutual fund KYC showing On Hold, Registered or Rejected? What each KRA status means after SEBI's 2024 rules, why it happens and how to fix it step by step.

In this article
"My SIP failed and the app says my KYC is on hold. I did KYC years ago. What happened?" Since 2024, SEBI-registered KYC Registration Agencies (KRAs) have rechecked old KYC records and given each one a status: Validated, Registered or On Hold. An On Hold status blocks new investments until you fix the cause, which is usually an unverified email or mobile number, PAN not linked with Aadhaar, or old documents that no longer qualify. Most cases can be fixed online in a few days.
This guide explains each status as of October 2026, why records go on hold, and the exact steps to clear it.
What each KYC status means
| Status | What it means | Can you invest? | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| KYC Validated | PAN, name, address, mobile and email verified against official sources, usually via Aadhaar | Yes, with any AMC or intermediary | Nothing |
| KYC Registered | KYC done with officially valid documents, but not fully verified against official databases (often non-Aadhaar documents) | Yes, usually with AMCs where you already hold folios; a new AMC may ask you to redo KYC | Modify KYC with Aadhaar to move to Validated |
| On Hold | Something is missing or invalid: unverified mobile or email, PAN not linked with Aadhaar, missing documents or in-person verification | No new purchases or SIPs; other requests may also be held | Fix the stated reason |
| Rejected | KYC application failed checks, such as unclear documents or a mismatch | No | Submit KYC again with correct documents |
| Under process / Submitted | Application received, not yet verified | Wait | Check again after a few working days |
The five KRAs are CVL KRA, CAMS KRA, KFintech KRA, NDML and DotEx. KRAs share records, so the status is the same whichever site you check, and the record shows which documents were used.
Why so many old KYCs changed
From 2024, KRAs started checking five attributes for every record: PAN, name, address, mobile and email. Records verified through Aadhaar became Validated. Records based on other documents such as a passport, voter ID or driving licence generally became Registered. Records where neither the email nor the mobile could be validated, or where key documents were missing, went On Hold. Utility bills and bank statements no longer count as address proof for this purpose.
This is separate from your bank's KYC; for that, see our guide to bank KYC updates.
Why KYC goes on hold: the common causes
- Email or mobile failed validation. The KRA sent a link or message and it bounced or was never confirmed, often because the number or email is old.
- PAN not linked with Aadhaar. An inoperative PAN cannot support valid KYC.
- Name mismatch. The name on PAN differs from the KYC record, for example after marriage or a spelling change.
- Documents not acceptable. KYC done long ago with documents that are no longer accepted, or with no in-person verification.
- Incomplete form. Unsigned form or missing photo, signature or address details.
Step-by-step: how to fix KYC on hold
Step 1: Find the exact reason
- Go to any KRA website and open the KYC enquiry page.
- Enter your PAN and complete the captcha.
- Note the status and the reason shown, and which KRA holds your record.
Step 2: Apply the matching fix
- If email or mobile is the issue: use the validation link on the KRA's website to verify the existing email or mobile with an OTP. If they have changed, you need a KYC modification (step 6).
- If PAN is not linked with Aadhaar: link them on the Income Tax e-filing portal first. A late-linking fee may apply. After the link shows as successful, ask for your KYC to be refreshed or modified.
- For most other causes, modify KYC with Aadhaar. On an AMC's website, MF Central, the registrar's site or your investing app, choose "Modify KYC" or "Update KYC". Enter PAN and Aadhaar, approve the Aadhaar OTP or DigiLocker fetch, upload your signature and complete the video or selfie verification.
- For a name mismatch: correct either PAN or the KYC record so both match exactly, then modify KYC.
- If online fails: submit a KYC modification form with self-attested Aadhaar or another officially valid document at an AMC branch or a CAMS or KFintech service centre.
Step 3: Confirm and resume
- Recheck the status on the KRA website after two to five working days. It should show Validated if Aadhaar was used.
- Check your SIPs. If instalments failed while KYC was on hold, see whether the SIP is still active. Our guide on missed SIP payments explains when a SIP gets cancelled and how to restart. If the SIP was cancelled, set up a new one as described in how to start a SIP online.
Worked example: the cost of a three-month hold
Sanjay runs a ₹5,000 monthly SIP. His KYC went On Hold because his old mobile number failed validation, and he noticed only after three failed instalments.
- Missed investment: 3 × ₹5,000 = ₹15,000
- Three consecutive failures on a monthly SIP mean the AMC cancels it, so he must register a new SIP.
- If his bank also charged a mandate return fee of, say, ₹500 plus 18% GST each time (illustrative; some banks do not charge, and a rejection by the AMC may not reach the bank at all), that is 3 × ₹590 = ₹1,770.
- Over a remaining 12-year horizon at an illustrative 12% a year, ₹15,000 could grow to about ₹15,000 × 1.12^12 ≈ ₹15,000 × 3.896 = ₹58,400.
Validating the new mobile number would have taken a few minutes. The figures are illustrative; check your own numbers on the SIP calculator.
If the problem is not resolved
When a KYC modification is stuck, or an AMC keeps rejecting transactions after the KRA shows Validated, escalate in order:
- The intermediary that processed your KYC, or the AMC or registrar (CAMS or KFintech) where the transaction failed. Ask for the specific rejection reason in writing.
- The AMC's investor service officer, listed on each AMC's website.
- SEBI SCORES at scores.sebi.gov.in. KRAs, AMCs and registrars are SEBI-regulated, and must respond with an action taken report within 21 calendar days. You can ask for a review within 15 days if not satisfied.
- SMART ODR at smartodr.in for conciliation and, if needed, online arbitration.

What not to do
- Do not share Aadhaar OTPs with callers who offer to "fix your KYC". Do it yourself on an official site or app.
- Do not click KYC links in unsolicited SMS. Type the KRA or AMC address yourself.
- Do not open a new KYC with a different PAN or create duplicate records; it makes the problem worse.
- Do not ignore an On Hold status just because you are not buying; it can also hold up other requests.
Key takeaways
- As of October 2026, mutual fund KYC shows Validated, Registered, On Hold, Rejected or Under Process on KRA websites.
- Validated works everywhere; Registered usually works with existing AMCs; On Hold blocks new investments and SIPs.
- Most holds come from an unverified email or mobile, PAN not linked with Aadhaar, or old documents.
- Fix by validating contact details on the KRA site or modifying KYC with Aadhaar; status usually updates in two to five working days.
- Escalate from the intermediary or AMC to the investor service officer, then SEBI SCORES, then SMART ODR.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between KYC Registered and KYC Validated?
Validated means the KRA has verified your PAN, name, address, mobile and email against official sources, usually through Aadhaar, and any SEBI-regulated intermediary can rely on it. Registered means KYC was done with documents that could not be fully verified; you can usually keep investing with AMCs where you already hold folios, but a new AMC may ask you to redo KYC.
Why is my mutual fund KYC on hold?
The common reasons are an email or mobile number that failed validation, PAN not linked with Aadhaar, missing or invalid documents, or a name mismatch between PAN and KYC records. The KRA website shows the reason next to the status.
Can I invest in a SIP if my KYC is on hold?
No. With KYC on hold, new purchases and SIP instalments are blocked until the issue is fixed, and other requests may also be held back. Fix it quickly, because three consecutive failed SIP instalments can cancel a monthly SIP.
How long does it take to fix KYC on hold?
An email or mobile validation can update within a day or two. A KYC modification with Aadhaar usually reflects in two to five working days, depending on the KRA and the intermediary.
Where do I check my mutual fund KYC status?
On any KRA website, such as CVL KRA, CAMS KRA, KFintech KRA, NDML or NSE's DotEx, by entering your PAN. The status is the same whichever KRA you check, because KRAs share records.
