Atal Pension Yojana (APY) gives a government-guaranteed pension of ₹1,000 to ₹5,000 a month from age 60 in return for small fixed contributions, as of October 2026. You can join if you are an Indian citizen aged 18 to 40 with a bank or post office savings account and you are not, and have never been, an income-tax payer. A 25-year-old pays ₹376 a month for the ₹5,000 pension; the younger you join, the less you pay.

APY is regulated by PFRDA and runs through the NPS architecture. In January 2026 the Union Cabinet approved continuing the scheme up to FY 2030-31.

Eligibility at a glance (as of October 2026)

Condition Rule
Age at joining 18 to 40 years
Account Savings account with a bank or post office; auto-debit from it
Income tax Not open to anyone who is or has been an income-tax payer (from 1 October 2022)
Minimum contribution period Until age 60, so at least 20 years
Pension options ₹1,000, ₹2,000, ₹3,000, ₹4,000 or ₹5,000 a month
Contribution frequency Monthly, quarterly or half-yearly
Accounts per person One

The taxpayer bar is the most misunderstood rule. If you file a return showing income-tax liability in any year before joining, you are ineligible. If a taxpayer opens an account by mistake, it is liable to be closed and the contributions refunded. People who become taxpayers after joining are not thrown out under that rule, but check with your bank if your status changes.

The government co-contribution (50% of the contribution up to ₹1,000 a year) was available only to early joiners in 2015-16 for five years. New subscribers do not get it.

APY contribution chart

Monthly contribution by joining age, as per the official APY chart. Contributions stay the same until age 60.

Joining age Years of contributions ₹1,000 pension ₹2,000 ₹3,000 ₹4,000 ₹5,000
18 42 ₹42 ₹84 ₹126 ₹168 ₹210
20 40 ₹50 ₹100 ₹150 ₹198 ₹248
25 35 ₹76 ₹151 ₹226 ₹301 ₹376
30 30 ₹116 ₹231 ₹347 ₹462 ₹577
35 25 ₹181 ₹362 ₹543 ₹722 ₹902
40 20 ₹291 ₹582 ₹873 ₹1,164 ₹1,454
Corpus returned to nominee ₹1.7 lakh ₹3.4 lakh ₹5.1 lakh ₹6.8 lakh ₹8.5 lakh

Intermediate ages have their own figures in the full chart on the PFRDA and Jan Suraksha websites. Quarterly and half-yearly contributions are roughly three and six times the monthly amount.

What you get: the guarantee

  • Subscriber, from 60: the chosen pension for life.
  • Spouse, after the subscriber's death: the same pension for life.
  • Nominee, after both die: the corpus shown in the last row of the table.

The pension is guaranteed by the Government of India. If the actual investment returns are lower than assumed, the government makes up the gap. If they are higher, the extra can be passed on as a higher pension.

You can change the pension amount (upgrade or downgrade) once a year, usually in April, paying or receiving the difference.

Worked example: is APY worth it? (illustrative)

Priya joins at 25 for the ₹5,000 pension.

  • Monthly contribution: ₹376.
  • Paid for 35 years: ₹376 × 12 × 35 = ₹1,57,920 in total.
  • From 60 she receives ₹5,000 a month for life; her husband continues to get it after her death; their nominee finally gets ₹8.5 lakh.

That looks generous for ₹1.58 lakh paid in. But the ₹5,000 pension is fixed in rupees. At 6% inflation, prices rise about 7.7 times in 35 years (1.06^35 = 7.69), so ₹5,000 in 35 years buys roughly what ₹650 buys today (₹5,000 ÷ 7.69). Check the effect for your own horizon with our inflation calculator.

So APY is best seen as a guaranteed floor, not a full retirement plan. Most people will need other savings too; see how much money you need to retire.

Join early: cost comparison

For the same ₹5,000 pension:

  • Join at 18: ₹210 × 12 × 42 = ₹1,05,840 total.
  • Join at 40: ₹1,454 × 12 × 20 = ₹3,48,960 total.

Joining at 40 costs more than three times as much in total, because there are fewer years for the money to grow.

How to join APY

  1. Through your bank: most banks and India Post let you register in net banking or the mobile app under "Social security schemes" or "APY". You can also fill a form at the branch.
  2. Provide: savings account number, Aadhaar, mobile number, nominee details, spouse details, and your chosen pension amount and frequency.
  3. Confirm you are not an income-tax payer in the declaration.
  4. Keep enough balance for the auto-debit on the due date.

You will receive an acknowledgement with a PRAN. You can view your statement through the NPS CRA (Protean) APY portal or your bank.

Missed payments and penalties

  • An overdue interest is charged on delayed contributions; PFRDA's rules have set this at about ₹1 per month for every ₹100 of contribution, and a PFRDA circular of March 2025 ended the practice of waiving it when contributions are uploaded late. Some banks publish slab-based charges, so check your bank's terms.
  • If contributions stop, the account is frozen after 6 months, deactivated after 12 months and closed after 24 months, as of October 2026.
  • You can revive a frozen or deactivated account by paying the dues and overdue interest.

Exit rules

Situation What happens
Normal exit at 60 Pension starts; spouse and nominee benefits as above
Death before 60 Spouse can continue contributions in the subscriber's name until the subscriber would have turned 60, then get the pension; or exit and take the accumulated corpus
Voluntary exit before 60 Refund of your own contributions plus net actual income earned, after charges; no guaranteed pension
Terminal illness Exit allowed with the accumulated amount, as specified by PFRDA

APY vs NPS vs EPF

APY is meant for workers outside formal pension systems. If you have EPF through an employer, or you can invest more and want market-linked growth, NPS or EPF may suit better. Our EPF vs PPF vs NPS comparison covers those in detail.

Feature APY NPS (Tier I)
Who 18-40, non-taxpayers 18-70, anyone
Pension Fixed ₹1,000-₹5,000, guaranteed Depends on corpus and annuity
Flexibility Fixed contribution Any amount above the minimum
Inflation Not linked Market-linked growth may beat inflation

Tax treatment as of October 2026

APY contributions are eligible under the NPS deduction provisions (old Section 80CCD, now carried into the Income-tax Act, 2025) in the old regime only. The pension received after 60 is taxable as income at your slab rate, though at these amounts most retirees owe no tax. For the full picture on NPS deductions, read NPS tax benefits.

Complaints

Raise problems with your bank branch first. If unresolved, file a grievance through the CRA's grievance system or PFRDA's online grievance portal, and call the APY toll-free number 1800-110-069.

Key takeaways

  • APY is open to Indian citizens aged 18-40 who have never been income-tax payers, as of October 2026.
  • It pays a guaranteed ₹1,000-₹5,000 a month from 60, then to the spouse, then a corpus of up to ₹8.5 lakh to the nominee.
  • A ₹5,000 pension costs ₹210 a month at 18 and ₹1,454 a month at 40.
  • The pension is fixed in rupees; at 6% inflation, ₹5,000 in 35 years is worth about ₹650 today.
  • Missed payments attract overdue interest, and the account closes after 24 months of non-payment.
  • Treat APY as a guaranteed base, and build other retirement savings alongside it.

Frequently asked questions

Who can join Atal Pension Yojana?

Any Indian citizen aged 18 to 40 with a savings account in a bank or post office can join, as of October 2026. Since 1 October 2022, a person who is or has been an income-tax payer cannot join, and an account opened in breach of this is closed with the contributions refunded.

How much do I pay for a ₹5,000 pension in APY?

It depends on your joining age. As per the official chart, it is ₹210 a month if you join at 18, ₹376 at 25, ₹577 at 30, ₹902 at 35 and ₹1,454 at 40, paid until age 60.

What happens to APY if the subscriber dies?

If the subscriber dies after 60, the spouse gets the same pension for life, and after both die the nominee gets the indicative corpus, for example ₹8.5 lakh for the ₹5,000 option. If death occurs before 60, the spouse can continue contributing in the subscriber's name or exit and take the accumulated amount.

Can I exit Atal Pension Yojana before 60?

Yes, voluntary exit before 60 is allowed, but you get back only your own contributions and the net income earned on them, after deducting charges. Exit before 60 on death or terminal illness has separate rules.

Is APY contribution tax deductible?

Under the old tax regime, APY contributions qualify like NPS contributions under the provisions that were old Section 80CCD, now in the Income-tax Act, 2025. Most APY subscribers pay little or no income tax, and new taxpayers cannot join anyway.
