"I've forgotten my UPI PIN and payments keep failing." The fix takes about two minutes: in your UPI app, open the bank account, tap Forgot UPI PIN (sometimes "Reset UPI PIN"), verify with your debit card details or Aadhaar OTP, enter the OTP sent to your bank-registered mobile number, and set a new PIN. Your money, linked accounts and UPI ID stay exactly as they were.

This guide covers all three reset routes as of October 2026, what to do if you are locked out after wrong attempts, the temporary limit after a reset, and the scams that target people in this exact moment.

Change vs reset: which one you need

Option When to use it What you need
Change UPI PIN You remember the current PIN and want a new one Old PIN
Reset (Forgot) UPI PIN You have forgotten the PIN, or it is blocked after wrong attempts Debit card details, or Aadhaar OTP, or Aadhaar face authentication, plus OTP on registered mobile
Set UPI PIN for the first time New account or new app registration Same as reset

The reset screen differs a little between apps, but every UPI app offers it under the bank account settings or the profile's payment settings.

Reset with your debit card

This is the most widely available route.

  1. Open the UPI app and go to the bank account section (profile, then bank accounts, or "Manage UPI").
  2. Select the bank account whose PIN you forgot.
  3. Tap Forgot UPI PIN / Reset UPI PIN.
  4. Choose the debit card option. Enter the last six digits of the debit card linked to that account and its expiry date.
  5. Enter the OTP sent by your bank to the mobile number registered with the bank.
  6. Set a new PIN (4 or 6 digits, as your bank requires) and confirm it.

The card must belong to the same account. A card from another account at the same bank will not work. If your card has expired, has been blocked or was never issued, use the Aadhaar route or request a new card; see our guide if your debit card is blocked or not working.

Reset without a debit card: Aadhaar OTP

Many banks let you reset through Aadhaar instead of a card.

  1. Follow steps 1 to 3 above.
  2. Choose the Aadhaar option and consent to Aadhaar verification.
  3. Enter the first six digits of your Aadhaar (the app shows what it needs).
  4. Enter two OTPs if asked: one from UIDAI on your Aadhaar-linked mobile, and one from your bank.
  5. Set the new PIN.

This works only if your Aadhaar is linked to that bank account and the mobile number linked to Aadhaar matches the one registered with the bank. If they differ, update one of them first; our guide on how to change the mobile number in your bank explains how.

Reset with Aadhaar face authentication

From October 2025, NPCI allowed Aadhaar-based face authentication as another way to set or reset a UPI PIN for Aadhaar-linked accounts. Where your bank and app support it, you are taken to a face scan using the phone's front camera instead of entering card details. Availability still varies by bank and app as of October 2026, so if you do not see the option, use the card or Aadhaar OTP route.

Note that biometric or face approval for payments is a separate optional feature with its own lower per-payment cap. If you reset or change your UPI PIN, apps disable biometric payment approval and you have to switch it on again.

Locked out after wrong attempts

If you entered the wrong PIN several times (often three), the bank blocks UPI for that account, usually for about 24 hours. You will see messages such as "PIN tries exceeded".

  • Option 1: wait about 24 hours, then try the correct PIN.
  • Option 2: reset the PIN using one of the routes above. Some banks still make you wait for the block to lapse before a reset works.

If neither works after 24 hours, call your bank's official helpline. If the account itself has been frozen for another reason, see our guide on a frozen bank account.

The cooling period after a reset

Banks treat a PIN reset as a high-risk event, because it is exactly what a fraudster does after taking over a phone or SIM. So after a reset, most banks apply a reduced limit for a short period, typically about ₹5,000 in total for the first 24 hours. Some banks apply it differently on some phones, so check your bank's help page.

Worked example

Kavita resets her UPI PIN at 8:00 pm on Thursday because she forgot it. Her bank's normal limit is ₹1 lakh a day, with a ₹5,000 cap for 24 hours after reset.

  • 8:30 pm: pays ₹1,200 for groceries. Used: ₹1,200. Remaining: ₹5,000 − ₹1,200 = ₹3,800.
  • 9:00 pm: pays ₹2,500 for a cab. Used: ₹3,700. Remaining: ₹1,300.
  • Friday 10:00 am: tries to pay ₹18,000 school fees. Fails, because ₹3,700 + ₹18,000 = ₹21,700 is above ₹5,000.
  • Friday after 8:00 pm: the cooling period ends; she can pay the ₹18,000 by UPI. If the fees were due on Friday morning, NEFT through net banking would have avoided the problem.

The lesson: if you reset your PIN, do it a day before any large UPI payment, or plan to use another method.

If someone else reset your PIN

If you get an SMS saying your UPI PIN was set or reset and you did not do it, treat it as fraud:

  1. Call your bank's 24x7 fraud line immediately and ask them to block UPI and debit channels.
  2. Call 1930 or report on cybercrime.gov.in if any money has gone.
  3. Check your SIM. A sudden loss of signal can mean SIM-swap fraud; read our guide on SIM swap fraud.

Under RBI's current customer-liability rules, you have zero liability for a third-party breach reported within three working days. For electronic banking transactions at commercial banks from 1 January 2027, the revised directions extend this to five calendar days. Details are in our guide on unauthorised transactions and zero liability.

Ready-to-copy complaint message

Use this if the reset option keeps failing or the OTP never arrives.

Subject: Unable to reset UPI PIN – OTP not received / reset failing

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am unable to reset the UPI PIN for my account ending [last 4 digits].
Since [date], the reset fails with the message "[exact error]" /
I do not receive the OTP on my registered mobile [number].

debit card and the Aadhaar option is not shown.]

Please check whether UPI or OTP services are blocked on my account,
confirm my registered mobile number, and help me reset the PIN.

Name:
Customer ID (if known):
Complaint reference (if any):

If the bank does not resolve your complaint within 30 days, you can escalate to the grievance redressal officer and then to the RBI Ombudsman at cms.rbi.org.in or 14448, within 90 days.

What not to do

  • Do not share your UPI PIN, card number, CVV or OTP with anyone, including people who claim to be from your bank, NPCI or the app. Nobody needs your PIN to reset it for you.
  • Do not call a "UPI PIN reset helpline" from a search result. Fake numbers are common. Use the app's help section or your bank's official number.
  • Do not write your PIN on your card or save it in notes or chats.
  • Do not choose an obvious PIN such as 1234, 0000, your birth year or the last digits of your mobile number.
  • Do not reset your PIN just before a big payment; the cooling cap may block it.

Keep your PIN safe and your money moving

Use a PIN you can remember but others cannot guess, and keep it different from your ATM PIN. If you use UPI for recurring bills or SIPs, AutoPay mandates continue after a PIN reset, so there is no need to set them up again; see how to cancel UPI AutoPay mandates if you want to review them. And if a forgotten PIN made you miss a payment, check whether any monthly SIP or EMI needs topping up; our SIP calculator helps you see what a missed instalment means over time.

Key takeaways

  • Reset a forgotten UPI PIN in your app with debit card details (last six digits and expiry) or Aadhaar OTP, plus an OTP on your bank-registered mobile.
  • Aadhaar face authentication is an extra reset option where your bank and app support it.
  • Three wrong attempts usually block UPI for about 24 hours.
  • Expect a cooling cap of about ₹5,000 for 24 hours after a reset, so plan large payments around it.
  • An unexpected "PIN reset" SMS is a fraud warning: call your bank and 1930 immediately.

Frequently asked questions

How do I reset my UPI PIN if I forgot it?

Open your UPI app, select the bank account, choose Forgot UPI PIN or Reset UPI PIN, then verify with your debit card's last six digits and expiry date, or with Aadhaar OTP if your bank supports it. Enter the OTP sent to your registered mobile and set a new PIN.

Can I reset UPI PIN without a debit card?

Yes, if your bank supports Aadhaar-based reset. Your Aadhaar must be linked to the bank account and the mobile number registered with your bank should match the one linked to Aadhaar. NPCI also allows Aadhaar face authentication for setting or resetting the PIN where the bank and app offer it.

What happens after three wrong UPI PIN attempts?

Most banks block UPI on that account for about 24 hours after three wrong PIN attempts. You can wait, or reset your PIN, though a reset also triggers a short cooling period with a lower limit.

Why can I send only ₹5,000 after resetting my UPI PIN?

Banks apply a cooling period after a PIN reset, new registration or device change, typically a ₹5,000 cap for the first 24 hours, to protect you in case someone else reset your PIN. Normal limits return afterwards.

Is UPI PIN the same as ATM PIN?

No. Your UPI PIN is set separately for UPI and can be 4 or 6 digits depending on the bank. You can choose the same digits, but it is safer to keep them different.
