If your scholarship shows approved or sanctioned but no money has reached your bank, the problem is usually in one of four places: the payment batch has not been released yet, your bank account failed validation, your Aadhaar is not seeded (or is seeded to another account) on the NPCI mapper, or the account is dormant, frozen or closed. Check your payment status on NSP's Track Your Payment or PFMS Know Your Payment first; the status message usually tells you which of these it is.

This guide applies to scholarships paid by Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT), including schemes on the National Scholarship Portal (NSP) and state scholarship portals. Rules and helplines are as of October 2026, from NSP's FAQs and SOP, the Ministry of Education's scheme FAQ and NPCI's BASE service as described by banks.

How a scholarship payment travels

Knowing the chain helps you see where it stopped:

  1. You apply and your institute verifies (Level 1).
  2. District, state or ministry officers verify (Level 2/3).
  3. PFMS (Public Financial Management System) creates your beneficiary record and validates your bank account.
  4. A merit list is made and the ministry or department approves a payment file.
  5. Money moves by DBT, with priority to Aadhaar-seeded bank accounts.

"Approved" on the portal can mean you are past step 2 or 4, not that money has been sent. Payments are made in batches, so two students from the same class can be paid weeks apart.

Step 1: Read the status correctly

What you see What it means What to do
Verified by institute / pending at L2 Still in verification Follow up with the scholarship cell before the deadline
Account validation failed / rejected by PFMS Bank details or account problem Fix the account; use NSP's one-time bank detail update carefully
Pending for payment / sanctioned Waiting for a payment batch Wait; check again after a few weeks
Payment success with date and account Money sent Check that account's statement (see Step 3)
Payment failed / returned Account could not accept credit Fix account issue and ask for re-processing

For NSP schemes, log in with your OTR and use "Track Your Payment", or use "Know Your Payment" on pfms.nic.in. For state schemes, use the status page on that state's portal.

Step 2: Check Aadhaar seeding

DBT is commonly paid to the account linked to your Aadhaar on the NPCI mapper. If you have several accounts, the mapped one may not be the one you expect.

  • Check mapping status on NPCI's Bharat Aadhaar Seeding Enabler (BASE): on npci.org.in, open the Consumer section, choose BASE and look up Aadhaar mapping status or history.
  • The NSP OTR profile also has an "Aadhaar Seeding - Check it now" option if your seeding status looks wrong.
  • To seed or move the mapping, submit the consent form at your bank branch (or use the BASE self-service options where your bank supports them).

Step 3: If PFMS says "success" but you cannot see it

The Ministry of Education's FAQ says that if PFMS shows success, you should check the account that was seeded with Aadhaar at the time of the transaction. In practice:

  • Check statements of all your accounts, including India Post Payments Bank or older accounts opened for other benefits.
  • Look for a credit with the scheme name, "PFMS", "DBT" or "APBS" in the narration on the payment date.
  • If the credit truly is not in the mapped account, ask that bank, in writing, to trace it using the date and amount from PFMS.

Step 4: Fix account problems

  • Dormant or inoperative account: RBI's 2024 instructions ask banks to keep accounts opened for scholarships and DBT able to receive credits even if inoperative, but other idle accounts, or banks that have not segregated them, can still cause trouble, and you cannot withdraw until you reactivate. See dormant account reactivation.
  • KYC pending: update it at the branch or online; see bank KYC update.
  • Frozen account: ask the bank why and who ordered it; see bank account frozen.
  • Small account limits: basic small accounts have limits on credits; NSP's SOP asks students to comply with any such condition that can block the scholarship.
  • Name mismatch between Aadhaar, bank and application: correct it at the source and refresh eKYC on your OTR.
  • Closed account or wrong IFSC: NSP gives only one chance to update bank details when PFMS has not validated them, so enter them carefully.

Worked example

Pooja is a second-year BSc student under the Central Sector Scheme, which pays ₹12,000 a year at graduation level. Her portal shows both years sanctioned, but she cannot find either payment in her current account: ₹12,000 × 2 = ₹24,000 looks pending.

  • PFMS Know Your Payment shows year one as "success" on a date last year, to an account ending in 4417.
  • Her current account ends in 9021. Account 4417 is an old school-time account at another bank.
  • BASE shows her Aadhaar still mapped to the 4417 bank. She had closed that account in the summer, so year two's payment failed and was returned.

Fix: she checks old statements and finds year one's ₹12,000 had been credited to 4417 before she closed it, so only year two's ₹12,000 is truly unpaid, not ₹24,000. She seeds Aadhaar to her current account (9021), confirms the new mapping on BASE, and asks the scholarship cell to request re-processing of the failed year-two payment. Without checking BASE, she would have kept chasing the wrong bank.

Documents to keep ready

  • Application ID and OTR number
  • Screenshot of the payment status from NSP or PFMS
  • Bank passbook or statement for the relevant period
  • Aadhaar seeding acknowledgment from the bank
  • Income certificate and fee receipt submitted with the application

How to complain

  1. Institute scholarship cell: they can see verification status and raise issues with the nodal officer.
  2. NSP Helpdesk: 0120-6619540, helpdesk@nsp.gov.in (8 am to 8 pm, except government holidays).
  3. PFMS Helpdesk: 1800-118-111, for payment status and failures.
  4. NSP grievance registration at nsp.gov.in, and the scheme or district nodal officer listed on the portal.
  5. CPGRAMS at pgportal.gov.in against the ministry or state department if unresolved.
  6. Bank problems (credit not traced, frozen account): bank grievance officer, then the RBI Integrated Ombudsman at cms.rbi.org.in after 30 days.

What not to do

  • Do not pay any agent, "scholarship consultant" or caller who promises to release a payment. PIB Fact Check has flagged fake scholarship offers asking for fees; report them at cybercrime.gov.in or 1930.
  • Do not share OTPs, UPI PINs or net banking passwords.
  • Do not close the account linked to Aadhaar while a payment is pending; move the Aadhaar mapping first.
  • Do not file a duplicate fresh application for the same year to "restart" it.

For how to apply and renew correctly next time, see our National Scholarship Portal guide.

Key takeaways

  • "Approved" often means verified, not paid; payments go out in batches by DBT.
  • Check NSP Track Your Payment or PFMS Know Your Payment first, as of October 2026.
  • DBT usually goes to the Aadhaar-mapped account; verify it on NPCI's BASE.
  • Dormant, frozen, closed or limit-bound accounts are common reasons for failure.
  • Escalate through the institute, NSP and PFMS helpdesks, then CPGRAMS; never pay anyone to release a scholarship.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my scholarship approved but not received?

Common reasons are that payment has not yet been released in the scheme's batch, the bank account failed PFMS validation, Aadhaar is not seeded or is seeded to a different account on the NPCI mapper, or the account is dormant, frozen, closed or has a credit limit.

How do I check my scholarship payment status?

For NSP schemes, log in and use Track Your Payment, or check Know Your Payment on the PFMS website. For state scholarships, use the state portal's status page. Then match the account number and date shown with your bank statement.

PFMS shows success but money is not in my account. What should I do?

Payment went to the account that was Aadhaar-seeded at the time of the transaction. Check which bank your Aadhaar is mapped to on NPCI's BASE service or at your bank, and look at that account's statement.

How do I link Aadhaar with my bank account for DBT?

Submit the Aadhaar seeding consent form at your branch or use the bank's app or net banking where available. The bank links Aadhaar to the account and the NPCI mapper. You can check the mapping status on NPCI's Bharat Aadhaar Seeding Enabler (BASE).

Where can I complain about a scholarship not received?

Start with your institute's scholarship cell. For NSP schemes, call the NSP helpdesk on 0120-6619540 or the PFMS helpdesk on 1800-118-111, register a grievance on the NSP portal, then use pgportal.gov.in if it stays unresolved.

Someone says they can release my pending scholarship for a fee. Is it genuine?

No. Scholarship portals and payments are free, and officials do not ask for fees, OTPs or bank PINs by phone or WhatsApp. Report such calls at cybercrime.gov.in or on 1930.
