Genuine work from home for homemakers in India usually means selling a skill (teaching, writing, translation, customer support, bookkeeping, design) or running a small home business (tailoring, food, crafts). Pay varies by skill, platform and hours, and is usually modest at the start. Real employers never charge a joining fee, so treat any "earn from home" offer that asks for money first as a scam.

Start with what you already do well

The quickest route to earning is a skill you already have, not a new course someone is selling. Make a short list:

  • Subjects you could teach, or languages you speak and write well
  • Household management skills that translate into work: accounts, planning, cooking, stitching
  • Work experience from before marriage or a career break, such as teaching, nursing, accounts, HR or IT
  • How many reliable hours you have each week, and at what times

Fixed, predictable hours matter. Many remote roles need you online during set shifts; freelance and home-business work is more flexible but income is less steady.

Options compared

Option What you need How you get paid Main risk
Online tutoring Subject knowledge, laptop, headset Per hour or per month Finding steady students
Content writing and translation Good language skills, laptop Per word, per article or per project Low rates at the start
Customer support (chat, email, voice) Fluency, quiet space, stable internet Monthly salary or per hour Fixed shifts, night slots
Bookkeeping and accounts Accounting basics, Tally or spreadsheets Monthly retainer per client Needs accuracy and trust
Social media and design Canva-type tools, a portfolio Per project or monthly Many competitors
Tailoring and boutique work Machine, skill, local customers Per piece Space and time
Home food business (tiffin, bakery) Kitchen, FSSAI registration Per order Hygiene rules, irregular orders
Handicrafts and resale online Products, photos, packaging Per sale, after platform fees Returns, unsold stock

Where to find genuine work

  • Job portals: Naukri, LinkedIn Jobs and Indeed list remote and part-time roles. Use the "work from home" or "remote" filter, and many portals also have a filter for women returning after a career break.
  • Freelance marketplaces: Upwork, Fiverr and Freelancer for writing, translation, design, virtual assistance and bookkeeping. Payments go through the platform.
  • National Career Service portal (ncs.gov.in): the Ministry of Labour and Employment's free job portal, which has carried listings for women and work-from-home roles.
  • Your own area: school parents, local shops needing accounts help, neighbourhood WhatsApp groups for tiffin or tailoring orders. Local referrals are often the most reliable start.

Check every employer on its official website, not through the number or link in an unsolicited message.

Home business basics

If you sell products or food from home, a few registrations and habits keep you safe:

  • Food: home food businesses need FSSAI registration or a licence depending on size. Apply only on the official FSSAI portal.
  • Udyam registration for micro enterprises is free on the official Udyam portal and can help with bank loans. Ignore websites that charge for it.
  • Separate money: open a bank account and UPI ID used only for business receipts so you can see real profit.
  • Price for profit: include ingredients or material, packaging, gas or electricity, delivery and platform commission, then add your time.
  • Loans: if you need equipment, government-backed options such as Mudra loans exist; read our business loan and Mudra loan guide before borrowing.

Worked example: pricing a tiffin service (illustrative)

Kavita plans 20 lunch tiffins a day, 22 days a month. All figures are assumptions to show the method.

  • Cost per tiffin: ingredients ₹45 + packaging ₹8 + gas and electricity ₹5 = ₹58
  • Selling price: ₹90
  • Margin per tiffin: ₹90 − ₹58 = ₹32
  • Monthly tiffins: 20 × 22 = 440
  • Monthly margin: 440 × ₹32 = ₹14,080
  • If delivery is outsourced at ₹10 a tiffin: 440 × ₹10 = ₹4,400, leaving ₹9,680

That ₹9,680 is before her own time (about 4-5 hours a day). Working it out this way shows whether to raise prices, increase volume or cut delivery cost before she starts, not after.

Your income, your name: tax and records (as of October 2026)

  • Income is taxed in your own name at slab rates. Income from your own skill, work or business is not clubbed with your husband's income. Clubbing under Section 99 of the Income-tax Act, 2025 (old Section 64) applies to income from money or assets gifted by a spouse, for example interest on an FD made from his money.
  • New regime: for tax year 2026-27, taxable income up to ₹12 lakh is effectively tax-free because of the rebate (Section 156, old Section 87A).
  • Presumptive taxation: small businesses and professionals can use Section 58 (old 44AD/44ADA) to declare a fixed share of receipts as income. Our freelancer tax guide explains the options.
  • GST registration is generally required only above ₹20 lakh turnover for services or ₹40 lakh for goods in most states (lower in some special category states). Selling through e-commerce platforms can require registration earlier.
  • Get a PAN and file a return if TDS was deducted or you want a record of income; filed returns help later with loans and credit cards.

e-Shram for home-based workers

If you do home-based or other unorganised work, are 16 or older, do not pay income tax and are not an EPFO or ESIC member, you can register free for an e-Shram card. It links you to welfare schemes. See our e-Shram card registration guide.

Safety first: scams that target homemakers

The Ministry of Home Affairs has noted that task-based part-time job frauds mostly target women, retired people and young job seekers. Watch for:

  • Registration, training, kit or "security deposit" fees to join a work-from-home scheme. Legitimate employers do not charge you to be hired.
  • Product kits for packing, stitching or assembly that you must buy, with a promise to buy back finished goods. The buy-back rarely happens.
  • "Like, review, rate and earn" offers that pay small amounts first, then ask for deposits for "prepaid tasks" or crypto.
  • Form-filling contracts followed by fake legal notices demanding a penalty.
  • Requests for OTP, UPI PIN, card details or net-banking passwords, or to install screen-sharing apps. No real employer needs these.
  • Requests to receive and forward money through your account. This can get your account frozen.

If you lose money, call 1930 or report at cybercrime.gov.in at once and inform your bank. Report suspicious calls and messages through Chakshu on sancharsaathi.gov.in. Our guide on UPI scams has the full steps.

Key takeaways

  • Start with an existing skill and the hours you can reliably give; pay varies by skill, platform and hours.
  • Find work through verified portals, marketplaces, the free NCS portal and local referrals, never through unsolicited WhatsApp or Telegram offers.
  • Price home businesses on full cost, including your time, delivery and platform fees.
  • Income from your own work is taxed in your name, not clubbed with your husband's; the new regime makes up to ₹12 lakh taxable income effectively tax-free for 2026-27.
  • Never pay to get a job and never share OTP or UPI PIN; report fraud at 1930 or cybercrime.gov.in.
