"Gold prices have fallen and my lender has sent a message asking me to pay money or pledge more gold within a few days. I have paid every instalment." This is a gold loan margin call. The fix is simple once you know the numbers: get the shortfall amount in writing, then either make a part-payment or pledge a little more gold before the deadline in your loan agreement, so the loan falls back within RBI's loan-to-value (LTV) limit.

You have not done anything wrong. The rule exists because the lender's only security is your gold. This guide explains the rule as of October 2026, how to check the lender's figure, and how to stop it turning into an auction. For the wider rules, see our gold loan guide.

Why it happens

Under RBI's Lending Against Gold and Silver Collateral Directions, 2025, which every bank, co-operative bank and NBFC had to adopt by 1 April 2026:

  • The maximum LTV is 85% for loans up to ₹2.5 lakh, 80% above ₹2.5 lakh up to ₹5 lakh, and 75% above ₹5 lakh.
  • The LTV must be maintained on an ongoing basis throughout the tenor, not just on the day of sanction.
  • For bullet repayment loans, LTV is measured on the total amount payable at maturity, principal plus interest.
  • Each lender's board-approved policy must spell out the action it takes when LTV is breached.

So three things push you into a breach:

  1. Gold prices fall. The lender revalues your pledge at the current reference price.
  2. Interest piles up. On bullet or interest-unpaid loans, the dues grow every month while the gold stays the same.
  3. You borrowed at the maximum. A loan at 84% LTV has almost no buffer; a 2% price dip can breach the cap.
Your situation Buffer before breach Margin call risk
EMI loan at 60% LTV Large; falls further as you repay Low
Interest-paid monthly, 75% LTV Moderate Medium
Bullet loan sanctioned near 85% (incl. interest) Very small High
Overdue interest on any loan Shrinking every month High

Worked example: how much to pay or pledge

Ramesh takes a 12-month bullet loan of ₹2,00,000 at 10% a year simple interest. Amount due at maturity: ₹2,00,000 + ₹20,000 = ₹2,20,000. The loan is below ₹2.5 lakh, so the LTV cap is 85%.

At sanction: 25 grams of net 22 carat gold at a reference price of ₹11,000 per gram (illustrative) = ₹2,75,000. LTV = ₹2,20,000 ÷ ₹2,75,000 = 80%, within the cap.

Three months later: the reference price falls 10% to ₹9,900 per gram. Gold value = 25 × ₹9,900 = ₹2,47,500. LTV = ₹2,20,000 ÷ ₹2,47,500 = 88.9%, above 85%.

Option Calculation Result
Maximum permitted dues now 85% × ₹2,47,500 ₹2,10,375
Option A: pay down the loan ₹2,20,000 − ₹2,10,375 About ₹9,625
Gold value needed for current dues ₹2,20,000 ÷ 0.85 ₹2,58,824
Option B: pledge more gold (₹2,58,824 − ₹2,47,500) ÷ ₹9,900 About 1.15 g of net 22 carat gold

The part-payment needed is slightly less in practice, because paying principal early also cuts the remaining interest that counts in the maturity amount. Ask the lender for the exact figure. A part-payment also saves interest, while pledging more gold costs nothing now but ties up more jewellery. If you would prefer predictable monthly payments, run the numbers in our EMI calculator and ask whether the loan can be converted to EMI.

How to fix it: step by step

  1. Read the notice carefully. Note the shortfall amount, the deadline and the channel to reply. Confirm it came from your lender's official number, email or branch, not a random link.
  2. Ask for the calculation in writing. Request the reference price and date used, net weight, purity, total dues and the LTV computed. Check them against your assay certificate.
  3. Verify the price. The lender's reference price should match the rate published on its website for that date. Gold prices move daily, so a small difference in timing is normal.
  4. Choose your cure:
    • Part-payment in cash or by bank transfer, credited to the loan account, with a receipt.
    • Additional gold, assayed in your presence, with an updated certificate listing the new items.
    • Pay overdue interest, if interest arrears caused the breach.
  5. Act before the deadline. The notice period comes from the lender's policy and your loan agreement; RBI does not fix one number. If you need a few more days, ask in writing before it expires.
  6. Get written confirmation that the LTV is restored and the notice is closed.
  7. Rethink the structure. If prices stay volatile, ask about converting to monthly interest or EMI repayment, or repaying a part to build a buffer. Our guide to gold loan prepayment and part release covers charges and how to get some items back.

If you genuinely cannot pay or pledge more, talk to the branch early. A lender is more flexible before the loan is recalled than after. For a broader plan when money is tight, read what to do if you can't pay your EMI.

Your rights during a margin call

  • Transparent valuation. The revaluation must use the same reference-price method as at sanction: the lower of the 30-day average and previous day's closing price, for your gold's purity.
  • The policy must be disclosed. The action on LTV breach and its timelines must be part of the lender's policy and reflected in your loan documents and Key Facts Statement.
  • No auction without notice. If the margin is not restored and the loan is recalled, auction can happen only after notice to you, newspaper advertisements and a reserve price of at least 90% of current value. Any surplus must be refunded within seven working days. Details are in our guide to gold loan auction rules.
  • Fair conduct. Reminders and recovery calls must follow RBI's fair practices code; threats or abuse are not allowed.

Where to complain and the timelines

  1. Branch: write if the shortfall figure looks wrong or the notice gave you no real time to respond. Quote the loan account number.
  2. Grievance or nodal officer: contact details are on the lender's website. Allow 30 days for a reply.
  3. RBI Ombudsman: file at cms.rbi.org.in (helpline 14448) if there is no reply within 30 days or you are not satisfied. Under the RBI Integrated Ombudsman Scheme, 2026, file within 90 days of the lender's final reply or response deadline, whichever is later.

Good grounds for a complaint include a revaluation price that does not match the lender's published rate, a margin call or auction step not allowed by your loan agreement, and no written notice before action.

Sample request to the lender

Subject: LTV shortfall notice - loan account [number]

Dear Sir/Madam,

I received your notice dated [date] stating that my gold loan
exceeds the permitted LTV and asking me to pay Rs [amount] by [date].

Please share in writing:
1. The reference price per gram and the date used for revaluation
2. Net weight and purity as per my assay certificate
3. Total dues (principal + interest) used for the LTV calculation
4. The exact amount needed, or grams of additional gold, to restore the LTV

I intend to [make a part-payment / pledge additional gold] before
the deadline. Please confirm that no further action will be taken
once the margin is restored.

Regards,
[Name], [Registered mobile number]

What not to do

  • Do not ignore the notice. An unanswered margin call can become a loan recall and an auction notice.
  • Do not take a costly personal loan or app loan in panic without comparing; a small part-payment from savings or family is cheaper.
  • Do not click payment links in unsolicited messages. Pay only through the branch, the lender's official app or your loan account details.
  • Do not take a new top-up loan to cover the shortfall. A top-up is extra borrowing against the same gold and is allowed only within the LTV cap, so it cannot cure a breach.
  • Do not wait for prices to bounce back. Prices can fall further, and the deadline will not move.

Key takeaways

  • RBI requires gold loan LTV to stay within 85%, 80% or 75% throughout the loan, so a price fall can trigger a margin call even if you pay on time.
  • For bullet loans, the LTV includes interest due at maturity, which leaves less buffer.
  • In the example, a 10% price fall needs about ₹9,625 of part-payment or about 1.15 grams of extra gold.
  • Ask for the shortfall calculation in writing and verify the reference price.
  • Escalate from the branch to the grievance officer, then to the RBI Ombudsman at cms.rbi.org.in after 30 days.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my lender asking for money when I have not missed any payment?

RBI's 2025 gold loan directions require the loan-to-value ratio to stay within the limit throughout the loan, not just at sanction. If gold prices fall, the value of your pledge drops and the loan can exceed the cap, so the lender asks you to restore the margin even if every payment is on time.

How much do I need to pay after a gold loan margin call?

Enough to bring the loan back within the permitted LTV, which is 85% for loans up to ₹2.5 lakh, 80% up to ₹5 lakh and 75% above that. For bullet loans the LTV is checked on principal plus interest due at maturity, so ask the lender for the exact shortfall in writing.

Can I pledge more gold instead of paying cash?

Usually yes. Most lenders accept either a part-payment or additional gold to restore the margin. The extra gold is assayed in the same way as the original pledge.

Can the lender auction my gold if I do not respond to a margin call?

If you do not restore the LTV as per the loan agreement, the lender can recall the loan and move towards auction, but only after giving you notice and following RBI's auction rules, including a reserve price of at least 90% of current value.

Is the margin call period fixed by RBI?

No. RBI requires each lender's board-approved policy to set the action it takes when LTV is breached. The notice period and options must be in your loan agreement, so read it and ask the branch in writing.

Where can I complain about an unfair margin call?

Complain to the branch and then the lender's grievance officer. If there is no reply in 30 days or you disagree with it, file with the RBI Ombudsman at cms.rbi.org.in.
