A personal loan for pensioners, usually sold as a pension loan, is an unsecured loan that a bank gives against the pension credited to your account with it. Government, defence and many PSU pensioners can get one, typically up to around 76 years of age, with the EMI deducted from the monthly pension. The terms below were checked against bank and RBI sources and are as of October 2026; rates change, so confirm with your bank before applying.

This guide covers who qualifies, how much you can borrow, the documents and process, and the questions worth asking so the loan does not squeeze your monthly income.

Who a pension loan applies to

Borrower Usually eligible? Notes
Central or state government pensioner Yes Pension must be credited to the lending bank
Defence pensioner (Army, Navy, Air Force, paramilitary, Coast Guard) Yes Separate products exist, such as SBI's Jai Jawan Pension Loan
Family pensioner (spouse or dependant receiving pension) Yes, with a lower EMI cap Age limit applies
PSU or treasury pensioner Often May need a written undertaking from the treasury or PSU
EPS (EPFO) pensioner Bank-dependent Not all banks offer pension loans on EPS pension
Retired person with no pension Not a pension loan Regular personal loan, loan against FD or gold loan instead

The key condition is that the bank can recover EMIs from your pension. Banks therefore insist that your Pension Payment Order (PPO) stays with them and that you will not shift your pension to another bank until the loan is closed.

What support is available: an example of current terms

Every bank prices pension loans differently. As an illustration, these are the terms SBI publishes on its website (effective 15 October 2026):

Feature SBI pension loan (as of Oct 2026)
Maximum amount Up to ₹20 lakh
Age at sanction Below 76 years
Maximum tenure 72 months; fully repaid by age 78
Interest rate 11.45% (2-year MCLR 8.90% + 2.55%), fixed for the tenure
Treasury/PSU pensioners 11.45% to 11.95%; 0.50% higher if the treasury or PSU does not give written consent
EMI cap 50% of net monthly pension; 33% for family pensioners
Guarantee Spouse eligible for family pension, another family member, or a third party eligible for a pension loan
Prepayment charge 2% of the prepaid amount plus GST (none if closed with a new loan under the same scheme)

Other public sector banks run similar schemes with their own age limits, caps and rates. Compare at least two banks where you could move your pension, but remember that switching the pension account takes time and paperwork.

How much can you borrow? A worked example

Suppose your net monthly pension is ₹30,000.

  • Maximum EMI at a 50% cap = 50% × ₹30,000 = ₹15,000
  • At 11.45% for 72 months, a ₹15,000 EMI supports a loan of about ₹7.79 lakh
  • As a family pensioner at a 33% cap, the maximum EMI is ₹9,900, which supports about ₹5.14 lakh

What a ₹5 lakh loan at 11.45% actually costs:

Tenure EMI Total interest
60 months ₹10,984 ₹1,59,025
72 months ₹9,633 ₹1,93,553

A longer tenure lowers the EMI but adds about ₹34,500 in interest here. Try your own numbers in the EMI calculator. Leaving pension headroom matters: medicine and health costs tend to rise with age, and the EMI comes out before you see the money.

Documents required

Banks keep pension loan paperwork light because they already hold your pension account. Expect to provide:

  • Loan application (branch form or online form)
  • PPO copy and recent pension account statement or pension slip
  • KYC: Aadhaar, PAN and photographs
  • Age proof if not already on record
  • Guarantor's KYC and, for a spouse guarantor, proof of family pension eligibility
  • Undertaking not to change the pension-disbursing bank during the loan, and the treasury or PSU consent letter where the bank requires it
  • Standing instruction authorising EMI deduction from the pension account

For general personal loan paperwork, see our guide on personal loan eligibility and documents.

How to apply through official channels

  1. Start with the bank where your pension is credited. Check its official website for "pension loan" or ask the branch. Many banks show a pre-approved pension loan offer in their app or net banking.
  2. Ask for the full cost sheet: rate, whether it is fixed or floating, processing fee, insurance premium if any, prepayment charge and penal charges.
  3. Submit the application online, at the branch or through the bank's official toll-free number. Only use numbers printed on the bank's official website or passbook.
  4. Sign the loan agreement and Key Fact Statement (KFS). RBI requires lenders to give a KFS showing the annual percentage rate (APR) and all charges before you sign.
  5. Disbursal goes to your pension account. The first EMI is usually debited from the next pension credit.

Do not pay anyone a fee to "arrange" a pension loan. Banks do not use agents who collect money in advance, and pensioners are common targets of fake loan calls and messages offering instant approval.

Tracking your application and loan

  • Use the reference number the branch or app gives you to follow up.
  • After sanction, check that the sanction letter rate matches the KFS and that the EMI and number of instalments are correct.
  • Once EMIs begin, look at your pension account statement every month. The EMI should be debited once, on the agreed date.
  • Your loan will appear on your credit report within weeks. Check it free once a year, as explained in how to check your CIBIL score free.

Questions to ask before you sign

  1. Is the rate fixed or floating? A fixed rate protects you from rises but usually allows a prepayment charge. RBI's ban on prepayment charges covers floating-rate loans to individuals sanctioned or renewed from 1 January 2026, not fixed-rate loans.
  2. What is the APR, including fees and insurance? Compare APR, not just the headline rate. Our guide to loan APR and total borrowing cost shows how.
  3. Is insurance compulsory? Some banks bundle credit life cover. It can protect your family, but you can ask whether it is optional and compare its premium.
  4. What happens if I pass away during the loan? Ask how the guarantor or family pensioner's liability works and whether the family pension will continue to be used for EMIs.
  5. What if my pension is revised or delayed? A delayed pension credit can cause a missed EMI. Ask about penal charges; SBI, for example, lists 2.40% a year on the irregular portion up to 60 days.
  6. Can I close the loan early, and at what cost? Get the prepayment charge in writing.
  7. Is there a cheaper secured option? If you hold fixed deposits, a loan against FD is often cheaper and has no age or income test. See personal loan vs gold loan vs loan against FD.

Common problems and fixes

Problem Likely cause Fix
Bank refuses because of age You are at or above the bank's age cap Ask about shorter tenures, a co-borrower, or a loan against FD or gold
Sanctioned amount lower than expected EMI cap on net pension, existing deductions Clear smaller loans first or choose a longer tenure within the age limit
Treasury will not give consent letter State treasury procedure Ask the bank whether it will lend at the higher rate without consent
EMI debited twice Technical error Raise a complaint with the bank and ask for a reversal in writing
Pension moved to another bank before loan closed Breach of undertaking Avoid it; settle or transfer the loan first

If you need a larger amount and own property, a loan against property for pensioners has longer tenures and lower rates, but your home is at risk if you default.

How to complain

  1. Bank first: Write to the branch or use the bank's complaint portal, and keep the complaint number.
  2. Escalate to the bank's grievance redressal or nodal officer if there is no reply.
  3. RBI Ombudsman: If the bank does not resolve it within 30 days, or you are unhappy with the reply, file a free complaint at cms.rbi.org.in under the Reserve Bank – Integrated Ombudsman Scheme. Our guide on what to do when a bank is not resolving your complaint explains the steps.
  4. Fraud: If someone took money promising a pension loan, call 1930 or report at cybercrime.gov.in immediately.

Key takeaways

  • Pension loans are for pensioners whose pension is credited to the lending bank; the EMI is deducted from the pension.
  • As of October 2026, SBI lends up to ₹20 lakh, below age 76 at sanction, repaid within 72 months and by age 78, at 11.45% fixed.
  • EMI caps (50% of net pension, 33% for family pensioners at SBI) decide how much you can borrow.
  • Ask whether the rate is fixed or floating, the APR, insurance, prepayment charges and guarantor liability before signing.
  • Never pay an agent to arrange a pension loan; apply only through the bank's official channels.

Frequently asked questions

Can a pensioner get a personal loan?

Yes. Government, defence and many PSU pensioners whose pension is credited to a bank can take a pension loan from that bank. Banks usually require the pension account to stay with them and the EMI to be deducted from the pension credit.

What is the maximum age for a pension loan?

It varies by bank. As of October 2026, SBI's pension loan requires the borrower to be below 76 at sanction, with full repayment by age 78 and a maximum tenure of 72 months. Other banks set their own age limits.

How much loan can a pensioner get?

The amount depends on net monthly pension, age and the bank's EMI cap. SBI, for example, offers up to ₹20 lakh and limits the EMI to 50% of net pension, or 33% for family pensioners, as listed on its website in October 2026.

Is a guarantor needed for a pension loan?

Often yes. SBI asks for a guarantee from the spouse eligible for family pension, another family member or a third party eligible for a pension loan. Check your bank's terms before applying.

Can I prepay a pension loan without charges?

Not always. RBI's ban on prepayment charges applies to floating-rate loans to individuals sanctioned from 1 January 2026. Many pension loans carry a fixed rate, and SBI lists a 2% prepayment charge plus GST, so ask before you sign.

Can a private pensioner or an EPS pensioner get a pension loan?

Dedicated pension loan schemes are mainly for government, defence and some PSU pensioners. Others may qualify for a regular personal loan if the lender accepts pension as income, or can consider a loan against FD or gold, which have no income test.
