Yes, you can sometimes get a personal loan while on probation, but many banks' published criteria ask for a minimum time with your current employer, so you need to show stable income in other ways. The documents that help most are your appointment letter with CTC, the salary slips and salary credits you already have, your previous employer's Form 16 and relieving letter, and an EPF passbook that shows you have been working continuously. If the gap is a few months, waiting until confirmation often gets you a larger loan at a better rate.

This guide explains what lenders check, the evidence to prepare, and the alternatives if banks say no. It reflects lender criteria published as of October 2026; criteria vary by lender and change often.

Why probation matters to lenders

Lenders worry about one thing: will your salary still be coming in 12 or 36 months from now? A probation period, typically three to six months but sometimes longer, is a stage where either side can end the job more easily. So lenders look for signs that your income is stable despite the new job.

Published criteria show how this works in practice. In October 2026, HDFC Bank's personal loan page lists at least two years of total work experience with at least one year in the current organisation, and a minimum net monthly income of ₹25,000. ICICI Bank lists two years of total work experience and a minimum net monthly income of ₹30,000, noting that the salary requirement varies by employer type and relationship with the bank. Other banks and NBFCs set their own rules; some accept shorter tenure with the current employer if total experience is good. Always check the lender's current page or ask the branch.

There is no RBI rule that bars lending to an employee on probation. It is a credit policy decision of each lender.

What lenders look at when you have just joined

What they check Why it matters How you can show it
Net monthly salary Decides how much EMI you can afford Salary slips, salary credits in bank statement
Time with current employer Shows income continuity Appointment letter with joining date
Total work experience Shows you have a track record Previous relieving letter, Form 16, EPF passbook
Employer profile Some lenders favour listed companies, PSUs, MNCs Employer name and category on the application
Credit score and history Shows repayment behaviour Your CIBIL or other bureau report
Existing EMIs Reduces how much more you can borrow Loan statements
Gap between jobs Long gaps raise doubts EPF passbook, a short explanation if asked

Income evidence to prepare

Collect these before you apply, so you can upload them in one go and avoid repeated requests (each new application can also mean a fresh enquiry on your credit report).

From your new job

  1. Offer letter and appointment letter showing designation, CTC break-up, joining date and probation period.
  2. Salary slips for every month you have been paid so far, even if it is one or two.
  3. Bank statement showing the salary credits, preferably the account where your employer pays your salary.
  4. Employee ID card or HR letter, if the lender asks for employment verification.

From your previous job

  1. Relieving letter and experience letter that show your earlier employment dates.
  2. Form 16 for the last tax year and your ITR acknowledgement, if you filed.
  3. Annual Information Statement (AIS) or Form 26AS from the income-tax portal, which shows TDS from your employers.

Linking the two

  1. EPF passbook from the EPFO member portal. If your UAN shows contributions from the old employer up to one month and from the new employer from the next, it is strong evidence that you moved jobs without a gap.

Plus the usual KYC: PAN, Aadhaar or other address proof, and a photograph. For the full list by lender type, see our personal loan eligibility and documents guide.

Worked example: how much can you borrow?

Rohit joined a new employer three months ago at a net salary of ₹40,000 a month. He has a two-wheeler loan EMI of ₹5,000. Suppose a lender uses an illustrative FOIR (fixed obligations to income ratio) of 50%.

Step Calculation Result
Maximum total EMI 50% × ₹40,000 ₹20,000
Less existing EMI ₹20,000 − ₹5,000 ₹15,000 room
Loan this EMI supports at 13% for 36 months ₹15,000 × present-value factor about ₹4,45,000

Because Rohit is on probation, the lender offers only ₹3,00,000 for 36 months at 13%. That EMI is about ₹10,108, well inside his ₹15,000 room. If he waits for confirmation, he may qualify for more, but borrowing less is also safer while his job is new. Try your own numbers on our loan eligibility calculator and EMI calculator. FOIR limits differ by lender and income level, so treat 50% as an example only.

Options if banks say "come back after confirmation"

  1. Apply where you already bank. Your salary-account bank or a bank where you have a long savings history may have a pre-approved offer based on your account data.
  2. Wait for the confirmation letter. If you are a few months away, the confirmation letter plus a few more salary slips can change both approval and rate.
  3. Use a secured option. A loan against a fixed deposit, gold loan or loan against mutual funds is decided mainly on the security, not your job tenure, and is usually cheaper.
  4. Add a co-applicant where the product allows it, such as a spouse or parent with stable income. Remember the co-applicant is equally responsible for repayment.
  5. Borrow less, for a shorter term. A smaller amount is easier to approve and to repay if your job does not continue.
  6. Use regulated digital lenders carefully. Check the app's lending partner is an RBI-regulated bank or NBFC, read the Key Facts Statement with the APR before accepting, and note the cooling-off period in the KFS (set by the lender's board, at least one day under the Digital Lending Directions, 2025). See instant loan apps: RBI rules.

If you have already been rejected, read loan rejected: reasons and fixes before applying again, so you do not collect several hard enquiries in a short time.

What not to do

  • Do not edit salary slips or inflate income. Lenders verify with your employer and bank statement; false documents can lead to rejection and criminal liability.
  • Do not apply to many lenders at once. Each formal application can add a hard enquiry to your credit report.
  • Do not pay "file charges" or "approval fees" to agents before sanction, and never to a personal UPI ID or account.
  • Do not share OTPs, your net-banking password or UPI PIN with anyone helping you apply.
  • Do not borrow the full amount you qualify for if your job is not yet confirmed; leave room in your budget for a gap in income.

Key takeaways

  • Probation is not a legal bar to a loan, but many banks list a minimum time with the current employer.
  • Prove continuity: appointment letter, salary slips, salary credits, previous Form 16, relieving letter and EPF passbook.
  • Expect a smaller amount or shorter tenure until confirmation; FOIR decides the ceiling.
  • Your salary bank, secured loans and co-applicants are the most realistic routes before confirmation.
  • Never use fake documents or pay upfront fees to agents.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a personal loan during my probation period?

It is possible but harder. Many banks list a minimum time with the current employer, often six months to a year, and some ask for confirmed employment. Your chances improve if you have a strong credit score, continuous past work experience, a salary account with regular credits, or an existing relationship with the lender.

Which documents prove income when I have just joined a new job?

Your offer or appointment letter showing CTC, the salary slips you have so far, bank statements showing salary credits, the previous employer's relieving letter and Form 16, and your EPF passbook showing continuous employment. Together they show both your current pay and your work history.

Does probation reduce the loan amount I can get?

Often, yes. Lenders may sanction a smaller amount or shorter tenure until your job is confirmed, because income continuity is less certain. The amount still depends on your net salary, existing EMIs and the lender's FOIR limit.

Is it a good idea to use an instant loan app during probation?

Only if the app belongs to or partners with an RBI-regulated bank or NBFC, shows a Key Facts Statement with the APR before you accept, and the cost is affordable. Avoid apps that ask for contacts or gallery access, charge fees upfront, or ask you to repay into a personal account.

Should I show my CTC or my in-hand salary to the lender?

Lenders assess net monthly take-home pay, not CTC. Give accurate figures and let the documents speak; overstating income or submitting edited salary slips can lead to rejection and is treated as fraud.
