How to Pause or Stop a SIP: Steps, Timelines, Rules
How to pause or stop a SIP online: pause vs cancel, where to do it, the 2-working-day cancellation rule, mandate tips and what happens to your existing units.

In this article
"Money is tight for a few months. Can I stop my SIP without losing what I have invested?" Yes. You can pause a SIP for a few instalments or cancel it completely, online, with no penalty from the fund house. Your existing units stay invested either way. As of October 2026, AMCs must process a cancellation within two working days, so place the request a few working days before your next debit date.
The right choice depends on whether the break is temporary or permanent. This guide covers both, step by step, plus what to do if a debit still goes through after you stopped.
Pause vs stop: which one do you need?
| Pause | Stop (cancel) | |
|---|---|---|
| What it does | Skips a set number of instalments, then restarts automatically | Ends all future instalments |
| Typical limit | Often 1 to 6 instalments; some AMCs allow only 3 months or 2 pauses per SIP | No limit |
| Existing units | Stay invested | Stay invested |
| Charges | None from the AMC | None from the AMC |
| Bank mandate | Stays active | Stays active unless you cancel it separately |
| Restarting | Automatic after the pause | You register a new SIP |
| Best for | Job change, a big one-off expense, a short cash crunch | Changing funds, ending a goal, a plan that no longer fits |
Pause rules are set by each AMC and differ: some require the SIP to have run for a minimum number of instalments, some allow the facility only for monthly SIPs, and the notice period ranges from a few days to about three weeks on paper forms. The online option on your platform will show the choices it actually allows.
A pause also beats simply letting debits fail. Three consecutive failed instalments cancel a monthly SIP anyway, and each failure can attract a bank charge. Our guide on what happens when a SIP payment is missed explains that route.
How to pause a SIP
- Log in where you started the SIP. That is usually the AMC website or app, your broker or investing app, MF Central, or the registrar's site (CAMS or KFintech).
- Open the SIP. Look for "SIPs", "Systematic transactions" or "My SIPs".
- Choose "Pause" or "Skip". Some apps offer "skip next instalment"; a pause covers several.
- Select the start month and the number of instalments. The platform shows the allowed range.
- Confirm with OTP and save the confirmation SMS or email.
- Check the next debit. On the next SIP date, confirm that no debit was presented.
How to stop (cancel) a SIP
- Log in to the same platform you used to register the SIP. A SIP started through a broker app generally has to be cancelled there, or through the AMC or registrar.
- Select the SIP and choose "Cancel", "Stop" or "Cease".
- Pick a reason if asked and confirm with OTP.
- Note the request date and reference number.
- Wait for confirmation. The AMC must process it within two working days of your request (SEBI's rule from 1 December 2024).
- Decide about the mandate. If no other SIP uses the UPI AutoPay or NACH mandate, you may cancel it. Our guide to cancelling a UPI AutoPay mandate has the steps.
Offline, you can submit a SIP cancellation form at an AMC branch or registrar service centre. Online is faster and gives you a timestamp.
Timing: the part that catches people out
Two working days is the processing limit, but a debit already scheduled with the bank may still go through if you cancel too close to the date. Count working days, not calendar days.
Example (assuming no holidays): Your SIP date is the 10th. You request cancellation on Friday the 6th. Two working days later is Tuesday the 10th, the debit day itself, so that instalment could still be collected. Requesting on Tuesday the 3rd or earlier gives a comfortable margin.
If a debit goes through after the cancellation should have taken effect, units are normally allotted for it. You can redeem them, or ask the AMC to refund the amount if the debit should not have happened.
Worked example: pause, stop or keep going?
Arjun invests ₹8,000 a month and expects a tight three months after a house move. He has 10 years left to his goal. Three options, using an illustrative 12% annual return:
| Option | Missed investment | Illustrative cost after 10 years |
|---|---|---|
| Keep paying | ₹0 | ₹0 |
| Pause 3 instalments | 3 × ₹8,000 = ₹24,000 | About ₹74,500 (₹24,000 × 1.12^10, where 1.12^10 ≈ 3.106) |
| Stop and restart after 12 months | 12 × ₹8,000 = ₹96,000 | About ₹2.98 lakh (₹96,000 × 3.106) |
The figures treat the missed money as if it were invested at the start of the 10 years, so they are rough, but the lesson is clear: a short pause costs far less than an open-ended stop that you forget to restart. If his budget can handle ₹4,000 instead of ₹8,000, reducing the SIP (stop the old one and start a smaller one) is another option. Try the numbers in our SIP calculator.

What happens after you stop
- Your units stay. They keep their purchase dates, which matters for exit load and capital gains when you eventually sell.
- No automatic redemption. To take money out, place a separate request. See how to redeem a mutual fund.
- ELSS units stay locked. Each ELSS instalment has its own three-year lock-in, even after the SIP stops.
- Restarting is a new SIP. It gets a new registration and, if you like, a new date and amount.
If a debit happens after you stopped or paused
- Check the confirmation. Note the date you placed the request and its reference number.
- Check the folio. See whether units were allotted for the debit.
- Write to the AMC or registrar with the cancellation reference, debit date and amount, and ask for a refund or written explanation.
- Escalate to the AMC's investor service officer, whose contact details are on the AMC website, if the first reply does not resolve it.
- File on SEBI SCORES (scores.sebi.gov.in) if the AMC does not fix it. The AMC must respond with an action taken report within 21 calendar days.
- Use SMART ODR (smartodr.in) if you remain dissatisfied after SCORES.
If your bank charged a mandate return fee for a debit presented after a valid cancellation, ask the bank to reverse it, citing the AMC's cancellation confirmation.

- As of October 2026, AMCs must process SIP cancellations within two working days; request a few working days before the debit date.
- Existing units stay invested after a pause or stop; selling is a separate redemption.
- Cancel the bank mandate only if no other SIP uses it.
- Escalate a wrong debit from the AMC or registrar to the investor service officer, then SEBI SCORES, then SMART ODR.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a penalty for stopping a SIP?
No. AMCs do not charge anything for pausing or cancelling a SIP. Exit load and tax apply only if you redeem the units, not when you stop future instalments.
How long does SIP cancellation take?
Since December 2024, SEBI requires AMCs to process a SIP cancellation within two working days of the request. Place it a few working days before the next debit date so that instalment is not presented.
How many months can I pause a SIP?
It depends on the AMC and platform. Many allow a pause of one to six instalments, and some limit it to three months or to two pauses during the life of a SIP. The SIP restarts on its own after the pause.
What happens to my money after I stop a SIP?
Units already bought stay in your folio and keep moving with the NAV. Nothing is redeemed unless you place a redemption request.
Should I cancel the bank mandate after stopping a SIP?
Only if no other SIP uses it. A single UPI AutoPay or NACH mandate can fund several SIPs, and cancelling it stops all of them. Keeping an unused mandate is harmless because no debit is presented without an active SIP.
