Available Balance Less Than Ledger Balance? Holds to Check
Your bank shows less available balance than ledger balance? The holds, liens, card blocks and unprocessed entries behind the gap, and how to get them released.

In this article
"My app says total balance ₹1,20,000 but available balance only ₹96,500. Where did the rest go?" If this is you, the short answer is: the money is still in your account, but part of it is blocked by a hold, a lien or an entry that has not finished processing. The fix is to open the balance details or "hold/lien" screen in the app, identify each block, and either wait for it to clear or ask the person or authority that placed it to release it.
Ledger balance vs available balance
| Ledger balance | Available balance | |
|---|---|---|
| Also called | Book balance, total balance, clear balance (some banks) | Withdrawable or usable balance |
| What it counts | All entries posted to the account | Ledger balance minus holds and liens, plus any overdraft or sweep the bank allows |
| Shown on statement? | Yes | Usually not |
| Changes with a hold? | No | Yes, reduces immediately |
| Use it for | Reconciling your statement | Knowing what you can spend today |
Banks label these differently. Some show "total balance", "available balance" and "hold/lien amount" side by side; others show only available balance unless you open the account details. When the two differ, the gap is the sum of the items below.
The holds and unprocessed entries to check
1. A lien you agreed to
You may have given the bank a lien without remembering it:
- Security for a loan or secured credit card, often on a fixed deposit but sometimes on savings balances. See FD lien not removed after card closure.
- Bank guarantee or overdraft arrangements for business customers.
- Unpaid dues on another product with the same bank, if your loan or card terms allow the bank to mark a lien or set off.
Ask the bank for the lien reference, the product it secures and the condition for release.
2. A hold placed by an authority
- Cyber-fraud lien. If money in your account is traced to a fraud complaint, police can ask the bank to hold the disputed amount. Several High Courts in 2025 and 2026 have said such holds should cover the disputed amount only.
- Court or tax attachment. A court order or tax demand can freeze or attach part of the balance.
These are released only by the authority that ordered them. Our guide on bank account frozen explains how to identify the authority and seek release.
3. Blocks you created through UPI or ASBA
- IPO applications. The application amount is blocked in your account until allotment. Under SEBI's T+3 listing timeline, the block for non-allotted bids should be released by T+2 working days after the issue closes.
- Other single-block UPI mandates, where a merchant blocks an amount and debits it later.
Check the mandates section of your UPI app for active blocks.
4. Card pre-authorisation holds
Hotels, car rentals, fuel stations and some online merchants authorise an amount first and complete the charge later. Until then the amount is held, not debited, so it reduces available balance but not ledger balance. It is released when the merchant completes or cancels the transaction, or after a period that depends on the bank and network. If it lingers after you have checked out, ask the merchant for a release confirmation and then your bank.
If your card was charged but the purchase failed and you did not get a charge slip, that is a failed transaction, not a hold: RBI's turnaround-time rules require reversal within T+5 days, with ₹100 a day for delay.
5. Unprocessed or uncleared entries
- Cheques deposited. Under CTS continuous clearing (Phase 1, from 4 October 2025), the paying bank confirms during the day, and funds are released to you within an hour of settlement. Until then a deposited cheque may show as "uncleared" or "in clearing" and is not spendable.
- Pending debits. A UPI, IMPS or card transaction with a pending status may be blocked while its final status is confirmed.
- Disputed transaction credits. A provisional or "shadow" credit given during a dispute may be shown but held until the dispute closes.
6. Things that are not holds
The minimum average balance requirement is not a hold; you can spend below it but may pay a charge. A sweep-in FD can make available balance higher than the savings ledger balance, because the bank counts the linked deposit. If available balance is higher, look for an overdraft limit or sweep facility.
Worked example: finding ₹23,500
Meera's app shows a ledger balance of ₹1,20,000 and an available balance of ₹96,500. She opens the hold details:
| Item | Amount |
|---|---|
| Ledger balance | ₹1,20,000 |
| IPO application block (applied on the last day of the issue) | − ₹15,000 |
| Hotel pre-authorisation from a weekend stay | − ₹8,500 |
| Available balance | ₹96,500 |
Check: ₹15,000 + ₹8,500 = ₹23,500, and ₹1,20,000 − ₹23,500 = ₹96,500. The gap is fully explained.
What she does: the IPO block should go by T+2 working days if she is not allotted; if allotted, ₹15,000 is debited and shares arrive. For the hotel, she asks for a written release confirmation at checkout, since her final bill was paid by UPI. Two days later her available balance is ₹1,05,000 (hotel released, IPO block still on: ₹1,20,000 − ₹15,000), and on allotment day it moves again.
If you keep a buffer for such blocks in a short-term deposit, our FD calculator shows what it earns while it waits.
How to find the cause in five minutes
- Open balance details in the app or net banking and look for "hold", "lien", "blocked" or "uncleared" amounts.
- Check the UPI app's mandates section for IPO or other blocks.
- Check card notifications for recent pre-authorisations at hotels, fuel pumps or rentals.
- Download a statement to see what is posted; see how to read a bank statement.
- Call or visit the bank if a hold has no explanation, and ask for a lien inquiry with the reference, date, amount and authority.
Where to complain
| Situation | Where |
|---|---|
| Lien or hold with no reason given | Branch or customer care, then grievance or nodal officer |
| Lien not released after the loan or card is closed | Same, with the closure letter |
| IPO block beyond T+2 working days | Your bank (the SCSB), then registrar, then SEBI SCORES |
| Police or court hold | The investigating officer or court; the bank cannot lift it alone |
| No final reply from the bank in 30 days | RBI Ombudsman at cms.rbi.org.in or 14448 |
Ready-to-copy request to your bank
Subject: Request for details of hold/lien – account [last 4 digits]
Dear Sir/Madam,
My account shows a ledger balance of ₹[amount] and an available balance
of ₹[amount] as of [date]. Please share, in writing, details of every
hold, lien or block on the account: amount, date placed, reason or
product it secures, the authority or reference, and the condition for
release.
If any hold is not supported by a valid mandate, agreement or order,
please release it and confirm.

What not to do
- Do not pay anyone who calls offering to "remove a lien" for a fee. Only the bank or the authority that placed it can release it.
- Do not share OTPs, PINs or screen access to "verify" a hold.
- Do not issue cheques or set up debits against the ledger balance; they are paid from available balance and may bounce.
- Do not ignore an unexplained lien; it can point to a fraud trace or legal order that needs a reply.
Key takeaways
- Ledger balance counts posted entries; available balance is what you can spend after holds and liens.
- Common causes are loan or card liens, IPO and UPI blocks, card pre-authorisations, legal holds and uncleared cheques.
- The app's balance details or a lien inquiry at the branch shows each block.
- Release depends on who placed the hold: you, a merchant, the bank or an authority.
- Escalate unexplained holds to the grievance officer, then cms.rbi.org.in after 30 days.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between ledger balance and available balance?
Ledger balance is the total of all entries posted to your account. Available balance is what you can actually withdraw or spend now, after subtracting holds and liens and adding any overdraft or sweep facility the bank allows.
Why is my available balance lower than my ledger balance?
Something is blocking part of the money: a lien for a loan or card, an IPO or other UPI block, a card pre-authorisation, a police or court hold, or an entry that has not finished processing. The net banking or app balance screen often shows the hold amount separately.
How long does a card pre-authorisation hold stay on my account?
It is released when the merchant completes or cancels the transaction, and otherwise after a period set by the bank and card network. Ask the merchant to release it and check with your bank if it lasts more than a few days.
Can a bank put a lien on my savings account without telling me?
A lien needs a basis: your own agreement, such as security for a loan or card, or an order from a police, court or tax authority. Ask the bank in writing who placed it, why and on how much money.
Which balance should I use to reconcile my statement?
The ledger balance, because it is the total of posted entries and is what the statement shows. Treat holds and liens as notes, not as entries.
