For an all-bank balance check in India, the fastest free route is a missed call or SMS from your registered mobile number to your bank's balance enquiry number; without internet you can also dial *99#, and with internet any UPI app, your bank's app or net banking shows the balance instantly. An ATM or a passbook update works too when you are near a branch. Every method below works for almost all Indian banks; only the numbers and app menus differ. The key condition for most of them is that your mobile number is registered with the bank.

If your balance looks wrong rather than just unknown, read how to read a bank statement to trace each entry.

1. Bank balance check by missed call

This is the most popular instant balance check. You dial the bank's balance enquiry number from your registered mobile, the call disconnects after a ring or two, and an SMS with your balance arrives within seconds. Nothing is deducted from your account.

The numbers below were checked on each bank's own official website in October 2026. Banks change these numbers occasionally, so confirm on your bank's site or app if one stops working.

For any other bank, including cooperative, small finance and regional rural banks, check your bank's website for its number, usually under "missed call banking" or "SMS banking". Do not take numbers from random social media posts; fraudsters often publish fake "customer care" numbers.

If you have several accounts linked to one mobile number, some banks send the balance for a primary account only or ask you to set a preferred account by SMS.

2. SMS balance enquiry

Many banks let you send a keyword such as "BAL" to a long number. For example, SBI accepts "BAL" and ICICI Bank accepts "IBAL" (to 92156 76766) from the registered mobile, as listed on their websites. SMS charges, if any, follow your mobile plan. Formats differ a lot between banks, so use the exact keyword on your bank's SMS banking page.

3. USSD *99#: balance check without internet

*99# is NPCI's USSD service. It works on any mobile phone, including a basic feature phone, without mobile data:

  1. Dial *99# from the mobile number linked to your bank account.
  2. Choose your language if prompted.
  3. Select the option for checking balance.
  4. Enter your UPI PIN. The balance appears on screen.

If you have not set a UPI PIN, you can usually create one through the same menu using your debit card details. Telecom operators may charge a small amount per USSD session under TRAI rules, so do not be surprised by a tiny deduction from your mobile balance. The same service also lets you send money, as explained in our guide on UPI not working.

4. UPI apps: the everyday online balance check

Any UPI app (your bank's own or a third-party app) can show the balance of every linked account:

  1. Open the app and go to the bank accounts section.
  2. Tap "Check balance" on the account.
  3. Enter your UPI PIN.

Under NPCI's API usage rules in force since August 2025, balance enquiries are limited to about 50 per app per day, which is far more than anyone needs. Note that money loaded into UPI Lite sits in a separate on-device balance and is not part of your bank balance; if it looks stuck, see UPI Lite balance problems. If you have forgotten your PIN, follow how to reset a UPI PIN.

5. Mobile banking and net banking

Your bank's official app or net banking shows the available balance on the home screen after login, along with recent transactions and a downloadable statement. This is the most detailed online balance check, because you can also see holds, liens and fixed deposits linked to the account. If you are locked out after wrong attempts, see net banking locked.

Several banks also offer balance enquiry on WhatsApp banking from the registered mobile. Save only the number shown on the bank's official website, and look for the verified business badge.

6. ATM and passbook

  • ATM: Insert your debit card, enter the PIN, choose "Balance enquiry". At another bank's ATM, balance checks may count toward your monthly free ATM transactions, so check your bank's charges.
  • Passbook: Update it at the branch counter or a self-service passbook printing kiosk. RBI has long asked banks to offer a passbook facility to individual savings account holders. A passbook shows entries only up to the last print, so it can lag the live balance.

Worked example: why two balances do not match

Priya's SMS balance and her UPI app both show ₹18,200, but her passbook, last printed on 1 October, shows ₹26,450. She also deposited a ₹5,000 cheque on 22 October.

  • Passbook (1 Oct): ₹26,450
  • Debits since then: rent ₹7,000 + UPI spends ₹1,250 = ₹8,250
  • ₹26,450 − ₹8,250 = ₹18,200, which matches the SMS and UPI balance.
  • The ₹5,000 cheque is not included yet because it has not cleared. Once it clears, the balance should become ₹18,200 + ₹5,000 = ₹23,200.

So the passbook was simply outdated. If her account required an average monthly balance of ₹10,000 and she held ₹18,200 most of the month, she would be well above it. If you are charged anyway, see how to dispute minimum balance charges. Money sitting idle far above the minimum can earn more elsewhere; compare options with the FD calculator. To see every entry without visiting a branch, use your bank's digital passbook or a statement download.

Safety: what a genuine balance check never asks for

Checking your balance never requires you to share anything with another person. Keep these rules:

  • Never share your OTP, UPI PIN, ATM PIN, CVV or net banking password, even with someone claiming to be from your bank. Banks do not ask for these.
  • Entering your UPI PIN is only needed to send money or check your balance inside your own app. You never need a PIN to receive money.
  • Be wary of "free balance check app" offers. Many apps in app stores promise an all bank balance check by reading your bank SMS. Some are harmless, but others ask for SMS, contacts, call log or accessibility permissions they do not need, and can read OTPs. Prefer your bank's official app or a UPI app listed on NPCI's website, and deny permissions that do not fit the app's purpose. Our guide on loan app permissions explains how risky permissions work.
  • Do not call numbers from search ads or social media. Use the number printed on your debit card, passbook or the bank's official website.
  • Keep your registered mobile number updated. Balance SMS and fraud alerts go to that number. See how to change your mobile number in a bank account.

If you have already shared an OTP or installed a suspicious app, block your cards and UPI through the bank immediately, call the 1930 cyber fraud helpline or report on cybercrime.gov.in, and read how to report fake app fraud.

If no method works

  1. Confirm the call or SMS is from the registered mobile, and that you have network coverage.
  2. Register for missed call or SMS banking, as some banks need a one-time registration.
  3. Check whether the account is dormant or frozen; inactive accounts may not respond to these services. See how to reactivate a dormant account.
  4. Call the bank's official customer care or visit the branch with your passbook and ID.

Key takeaways

  • A missed call or SMS from your registered mobile is the quickest free bank balance check for most banks.
  • *99# works without internet on any phone, using your UPI PIN.
  • UPI apps, the bank's app and net banking give an instant online balance check; the passbook only shows entries up to its last update.
  • Take balance enquiry numbers only from your bank's official website, as they change and fake numbers circulate.
  • Never share OTPs or PINs, and avoid balance apps that demand SMS or contacts access.

Frequently asked questions

How can I check my bank balance without internet?

Give a missed call or send an SMS to your bank's balance enquiry number from your registered mobile, or dial *99# for the USSD service, which works on basic phones without mobile data. An ATM balance enquiry or a passbook update at the branch also works offline.

Is missed call balance enquiry free?

Most banks describe their missed call balance service as free and the call disconnects automatically before it is answered. SMS-based requests may cost the normal SMS charge of your mobile plan, so check your bank's terms.

Why is my missed call balance check not working?

The call must come from the mobile number registered with that bank account, and some banks also require registration for SMS banking first. If you changed your number, update it at the branch or through net banking before trying again.

Is it safe to use a third-party app to check all bank balances?

UPI apps listed on NPCI's website show your balance only after you enter your UPI PIN, which is fairly safe. Avoid unknown 'all bank balance' apps that ask for SMS, contacts or accessibility permissions, and never share your OTP, PIN or CVV with anyone.

Why does my UPI app balance differ from my passbook?

UPI and SMS usually show the live available balance, while a passbook shows only entries printed up to the last update. Uncleared cheques, holds or liens and the money parked in UPI Lite can also make the figures look different.
