A bank balance certificate is a signed letter from your bank confirming how much money is in your account on a particular date. To get one, request it through net banking or the app if your bank offers it, or give a short written request at your home branch with the account number, the date you need the balance for, the purpose and the accounts to include. Most banks issue it the same day or within a few working days.

There is no single RBI format for this certificate, so the details below describe how most Indian banks handle it as of October 2026. Always check the requirements of the office that asked for it.

When you might need one

  • Visa applications, especially student and long-stay visas, to show funds for tuition and living costs.
  • Admissions in India or abroad that ask for proof of funds.
  • Government tenders and contracts, licence applications and some registrations.
  • Loan applications, where a lender wants to see margin money or the down payment.
  • Court, guardianship or legal matters where a balance on a date must be proved.

What a good certificate shows

Item Why it matters
Bank letterhead, branch name and IFSC Shows the issuing branch
Account holder name(s) exactly as in passport or application Name mismatches cause rejections
Account number (often masked) and type Identifies the account
Balance as on a specific date, in ₹ The core statement of the certificate
FDs and RDs, with maturity dates, if requested Lets you show total funds
Signature, name and designation of the authorised official, and bank seal What most authorities check
Date of issue and reference number Lets the authority verify it with the bank

Some foreign embassies or universities also want the amount converted to a foreign currency. Banks often add this at the day's card rate if you ask, but some authorities prefer you to show the conversion yourself; follow their instructions.

How to request it, step by step

Online

  1. Log in to net banking or your bank app.
  2. Look for Account services, Requests or Certificates. The exact name differs by bank.
  3. Choose Balance certificate, select the account(s), the "as on" date and the purpose.
  4. Pay any fee shown, then download the PDF or choose branch collection or courier.
  5. Check whether the downloaded copy carries a digital signature or needs a branch stamp for your purpose.

At the branch

  1. Visit your home branch (where the account is held). Other branches may not issue it.
  2. Give a written request (template below) with a copy of your ID.
  3. Ask for FDs and RDs to be included if you need the full amount.
  4. Collect the signed and stamped certificate; check every detail before you leave.

If your KYC is outdated, the branch may ask you to update it first. See bank KYC update.

Charges

RBI does not set a common fee. Each bank lists its charge for "issue of balance certificate" or "certificates" in its schedule of service charges, plus GST. Some banks waive it for premium or salary accounts. Ask before you apply, and keep the receipt.

Worked example: does the balance meet the requirement?

Priya needs to show ₹12,00,000 for a study visa application. Her accounts on 20 October:

Holding Amount
Savings account ₹4,50,000
Fixed deposit (principal) ₹6,00,000
Accrued interest on FD so far (illustrative) ₹21,000
Recurring deposit balance ₹1,20,000
Total that can be certified ₹11,91,000

₹4,50,000 + ₹6,00,000 + ₹21,000 + ₹1,20,000 = ₹11,91,000. She is ₹9,000 short. Instead of getting a certificate that falls short, she adds ₹9,000 to her savings account before the "as on" date and then requests a certificate showing all three holdings, with FD and RD maturity dates.

Two lessons from this: count only what the bank will certify in your name, and check whether the authority accepts accrued interest and FDs at all. The FD calculator helps you estimate accrued interest before you ask the bank.

How recent should the certificate be?

A balance certificate speaks only for the date printed on it. Many visa offices, universities and tender authorities expect it to be recent, often issued within the last few weeks before you apply, and some specify an exact window. Read the checklist of the authority that asked for it, and if your application is delayed, request a fresh certificate rather than reusing an old one. If you need the same certificate for two applications, ask the branch for two signed originals at the same time; it usually costs less than coming back later.

Balance certificate vs other bank documents

Document What it proves Typical use
Balance certificate Balance on one date Visa, admission, tenders
Account statement All transactions over a period Visa, loans, tax; see how to read a bank statement
Passbook or e-passbook Same as statement, in passbook form Personal records; see bank statement download
Interest certificate Interest earned in a year Income tax
Solvency certificate Bank's opinion of your financial standing Tenders, contractors; usually needs more documents and a higher fee

Some visa offices treat a sudden large deposit just before the certificate date with suspicion. Keep your statement for the last few months ready to show where the money came from.

What not to do

  • Do not use online "balance certificate generators" or edited PDFs. Authorities verify with the bank, and a fake document can lead to visa bans or criminal action.
  • Do not share net banking passwords or OTPs with visa agents or consultants who offer to download it for you.
  • Do not borrow money from someone just to park it for a day; many authorities ask for the source of funds.
  • Do not leave it to the last day. Some branches take a few working days, especially for joint accounts or FDs at other branches.
  • Do not ignore name mismatches. Fix them with the bank first.

You can check the balance yourself before requesting the certificate; see how to check bank balance.

Key takeaways

  • A balance certificate confirms your balance on one date, on bank letterhead, signed and stamped.
  • Request it online if your bank offers it, or with a short letter at your home branch.
  • Include FDs and RDs if you need to show total funds, and check the authority accepts them.
  • Fees are set by each bank in its schedule of charges; RBI does not fix one.
  • Never use edited or generated certificates, and never share passwords or OTPs with agents.

Frequently asked questions

What is a bank balance certificate?

It is a letter on the bank's letterhead, signed and stamped by an authorised official, confirming the balance in your account or accounts as on a specific date. It is often asked for in visa, admission, tender and loan applications.

Can I download a bank balance certificate online?

Many banks let you request or download a balance certificate through net banking or the mobile app, usually under account services or certificates. Some authorities still insist on a signed and stamped copy from the branch, so check what the application accepts.

How much does a bank balance certificate cost?

There is no common RBI fee. Each bank sets its own charge in its schedule of service charges, plus GST, and some issue it free for certain account types. Check your bank's current schedule or ask the branch.

Is a balance certificate the same as a bank statement?

No. A statement lists every transaction over a period, while a balance certificate confirms only the balance on a particular date. Many visa and admission checklists ask for both.

Can fixed deposits be included in a balance certificate?

Usually yes. You can ask the bank to show savings balance, fixed deposits and recurring deposits held in your name, with the FD maturity dates and accrued interest if the authority needs it.
