"My bank says Aadhaar is linked, yet my subsidy keeps failing." The one-line answer: Aadhaar linked to your account for KYC is not the same as Aadhaar mapped in the NPCI mapper for Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT); you need the second, and only one account can hold it at a time. Check the mapping status, and if it shows another bank or "inactive", give your bank a fresh seeding consent form.
All details below are as of October 2026.
Who this applies to
- Anyone receiving government benefits that are paid on Aadhaar, such as PM-KISAN, LPG subsidy, scholarships and many state pensions
- People who recently opened a new account (often a Jan Dhan or post office account) and saw benefits move there
- People whose DBT shows "paid" but not credited (see DBT payment not received)
Linking vs seeding vs mapping: the difference
| Term | What it means | Where it is recorded | Does it decide DBT? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aadhaar linked for KYC | Bank stores your Aadhaar as an identity document | Your bank's own records | No |
| Aadhaar seeded (with consent) | You ask the bank to use this account for Aadhaar-based payments | Bank sends it to NPCI | Yes, once NPCI records it |
| NPCI mapper entry | National table of Aadhaar number → one bank (by its IIN) | NPCI | Yes, this is what routes DBT |
The Aadhaar Payment Bridge System, run by NPCI, routes government payments that are sent to an Aadhaar number. It looks up the NPCI mapper to find the bank, and the bank credits the account it has seeded. If your Aadhaar is only in the bank's KYC records and not in the mapper, an Aadhaar-based payment has nowhere to go.
The "last seeded" rule
An Aadhaar number can be active against only one bank in the NPCI mapper. If you give seeding consent at a second bank, the mapping generally moves to that bank, and future Aadhaar-based DBT follows it. This is why benefits sometimes "disappear" right after someone opens a new account and gives Aadhaar consent there.
How to check your mapping status
- UIDAI myAadhaar portal: use the Bank Seeding Status service. Enter Aadhaar or Virtual ID and the OTP sent to your Aadhaar-linked mobile. It shows the bank name, status (active or inactive) and date of mapping. UIDAI has at times marked this service temporarily unavailable; if so, use the next option.
- NPCI BASE: on npci.org.in, open the Consumer section and choose Bharat Aadhaar Seeding Enabler (BASE). It offers a mapped-status check and mapping history. Your Aadhaar and mobile need to be linked to your bank account for some BASE features.
- Your bank: the branch or customer care can tell you whether your account is seeded in the NPCI mapper.
Documents required for seeding
- Aadhaar card (or e-Aadhaar)
- Passbook or account details of the account you want benefits in
- Aadhaar seeding consent form (available at the branch; some banks allow it through net banking, app or BASE)
- Mobile number linked to both Aadhaar and the bank account, for online options
How to seed or change the mapping
At the branch (works everywhere)
- Fill in the bank's Aadhaar seeding / NPCI mapping consent form for the account you want.
- Ask the staff to confirm it will be updated in the NPCI mapper, not only in KYC.
- Keep the acknowledged copy with date and stamp.
- Recheck the status after a few working days.
Online
Many banks let you seed Aadhaar through net banking or the app. NPCI's BASE also supports seeding requests, though availability of each feature has varied by bank. If an online request does not reflect, go to the branch.
Moving DBT to another account
Give consent at the new bank. The new seeding generally replaces the old one. Do not close the old account until you confirm the mapping has moved and no pending credits are due there.
Worked example: two accounts, one Aadhaar
Ramesh has a savings account at Bank A (seeded in 2021) and opens a Jan Dhan account at Bank B in March 2026, giving Aadhaar consent there. His LPG subsidy and a state pension of ₹1,000 a month (illustrative) are Aadhaar-based.
- April to September 2026: 6 months × ₹1,000 = ₹6,000 of pension credited to Bank B, not Bank A
- Ramesh checks only Bank A and thinks ₹6,000 is "missing"
- The mapping check shows Bank B, active, March 2026; the money is in Bank B
Fix: if he wants credits in Bank A, he submits a fresh consent form at Bank A. Otherwise he keeps using Bank B. Nothing was lost; it went where the mapper pointed.
Common problems and fixes
| Problem | Fix |
|---|---|
| Bank says "linked", mapper shows nothing | Ask for the NPCI seeding form, not just KYC; get acknowledgement |
| Mapper shows "inactive" | Fresh consent form at the branch |
| Mapper shows the wrong bank | Seed again at the bank you want |
| Mapped to a closed account | Seed a working account; tell the scheme department |
| Mobile not linked to Aadhaar, so OTP check fails | Update mobile at an Aadhaar centre, or check through your bank |
| Account seeded but credits rejected | Check KYC, dormant status, and name mismatch |
Status tracking
After seeding, track three things: the mapper status (active, correct bank), your scheme's portal (beneficiary details updated), and PFMS payment status for the next payment.
How to complain
- Branch, then the bank's grievance or nodal officer if seeding is not done despite your consent form. The bank, not NPCI or UIDAI, updates the mapper.
- RBI Ombudsman at cms.rbi.org.in (helpline 14448) if the bank does not resolve it within 30 days.
- Scheme helpline or CPGRAMS (pgportal.gov.in) if the mapping is correct but the department still sends money to old details.
- UIDAI helpline 1947 for Aadhaar problems such as an inactive Aadhaar or a mobile number update.
Ready-to-copy letter to the bank
Subject: Request to seed Aadhaar in NPCI mapper for DBT – account [last 4 digits]
I submitted Aadhaar seeding consent for this account on [date]
(acknowledgement copy attached). My NPCI mapping status still shows
[not mapped / inactive / another bank] on [date of check].
Please update my Aadhaar in the NPCI mapper for this account so that
government DBT payments are credited here, and confirm in writing.
Name: [as per Aadhaar], Mobile: [number]
What not to do
- Do not give Aadhaar consent at every bank that asks; it can move your benefits.
- Do not pay agents to "activate DBT". Seeding at the bank and status checks are free.
- Do not share Aadhaar OTPs with callers claiming to fix your DBT.
- Do not close an old account until you confirm the mapper has moved.
Key takeaways
- KYC linking does not decide DBT; the NPCI mapper does.
- One Aadhaar maps to one account at a time; the last active seeding generally wins.
- Check status on UIDAI myAadhaar, NPCI BASE, or through your bank.
- Fix inactive or wrong mapping with a consent form at the bank you want.
- Escalate seeding delays to the bank's grievance officer and then the RBI Ombudsman.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between Aadhaar linking and NPCI mapping?
Linking Aadhaar to your bank account for KYC only stores the number in the bank's records. NPCI mapping, also called Aadhaar seeding for DBT, tells the national payment system which one account should receive Aadhaar-based government payments. You need the second for DBT.
How do I check my NPCI Aadhaar mapping status?
Use the Bank Seeding Status service on the UIDAI myAadhaar portal with Aadhaar and OTP, or the Bharat Aadhaar Seeding Enabler (BASE) option under the Consumer section of npci.org.in. Your bank can also check it for you.
Can my Aadhaar be mapped to two bank accounts for DBT?
No. Only one account can be active in the NPCI mapper for an Aadhaar at a time. If you give seeding consent to more than one bank, DBT generally goes to the account seeded last with active status.
My Aadhaar mapping shows inactive. What should I do?
Visit your bank branch with Aadhaar and passbook, fill in the Aadhaar seeding consent form, and ask the bank to update the NPCI mapper. Get the acknowledged copy and check the status again after a few working days.
How long does NPCI mapping take after I submit the consent form?
It depends on the bank, but it is commonly updated within a few working days. If it does not show after a reasonable time, ask the branch for the reason in writing and escalate to the bank's grievance officer.
