There is no special "Aadhaar card loan" product in India. When an app or lender says "loan on Aadhaar card", it means Aadhaar is used for eKYC, to verify your identity and address online; the loan itself is still a normal personal loan that depends on your credit score, income and existing debts. That is why most genuine lenders also ask for PAN and bank details. Offers that promise an "Aadhaar loan in minutes" with no other checks are one of the most common hooks for loan fraud.

This guide explains how Aadhaar-based eKYC and video KYC work, which documents you really need, how long approval takes, the scams to watch for, and how to lock your Aadhaar biometrics.

What "Aadhaar card loan" really means

Every regulated lender must complete KYC (Know Your Customer) before lending. Aadhaar makes KYC faster because it can be verified digitally:

  • Aadhaar OTP eKYC: You enter your Aadhaar number, receive an OTP on your Aadhaar-linked mobile, and the lender gets your name, address, photo and date of birth from UIDAI with your consent.
  • Offline Aadhaar / DigiLocker: You share a digitally signed Aadhaar XML or document through DigiLocker.
  • Biometric eKYC: Fingerprint or iris authentication at a branch or agent point.

None of these tell the lender whether you can repay. For that, the lender pulls your credit report (CIBIL, Experian, Equifax or CRIF), checks your income and bank statements, and calculates how much EMI you can afford. Aadhaar is the identity step, not the approval step.

Aadhaar is also generally voluntary for KYC: officially valid documents include a passport, driving licence, voter ID, NREGA job card and proof of possession of Aadhaar, among others. PAN (or Form 60 where allowed) is usually required for a loan.

How eKYC and video KYC work for loans

Under RBI's KYC directions, lenders can onboard you without a branch visit:

  1. Aadhaar OTP eKYC verifies identity quickly. RBI has historically capped accounts opened with only OTP-based eKYC (for loans, term loans of up to ₹60,000 in aggregate a year, valid for one year) unless full KYC or video KYC is completed. Many lenders therefore move straight to video KYC.
  2. Video KYC (V-CIP) is a live video call with the lender's official on its own app or website. You show your original PAN, the official captures a live photo, checks your location and asks a few questions. RBI treats V-CIP as equivalent to face-to-face KYC.
  3. Credit and income checks follow: bureau report, bank statement analysis (often through the RBI-regulated Account Aggregator framework with your consent), and employer or ITR checks.
  4. KFS and e-sign: For digital loans, RBI's Digital Lending Directions, 2025 require a Key Fact Statement showing the APR, all fees and the repayment schedule before you sign, usually by Aadhaar e-sign.
  5. Disbursal goes directly to your own bank account, not to a third party's.

Typical documents for an Aadhaar-based personal loan

Document Why it is needed Salaried Self-employed
Aadhaar (eKYC / offline XML) Identity and address Yes Yes
PAN Identity, credit report, tax trail Yes Yes
Live selfie or video KYC Confirms you are the applicant Yes Yes
Bank statements (3-6 months) Income and spending pattern Yes Yes
Salary slips / Form 16 Income proof Usually No
ITR, GST or business proof Income proof No Usually
Bank account and mandate Disbursal and EMI auto-debit Yes Yes

The exact list varies by lender; see our personal loan eligibility and documents guide for income and score requirements. PAN, unlike Aadhaar, is usually required; if you do not have one, see loan without PAN card for the limited exceptions.

5 minute me loan kaise le: how long approval really takes

"5 minute me loan" is possible only when most checks are already done:

  • Pre-approved offers from your own bank, where the bank already knows your income and account history, can be disbursed within minutes in the app. Read what pre-approved loan offers really mean.
  • Existing customers of a regulated NBFC with a good repayment record may get same-day loans.
  • New borrowers usually need a few hours to a few working days, depending on video KYC slots, income verification and the lender's credit policy.

Speed is not the same as eligibility. If your score or income does not fit the lender's policy, Aadhaar will not change the answer. Check your credit score for free before applying.

Worked example: genuine loan vs "Aadhaar loan" scam (illustrative)

Genuine digital loan: ₹50,000 at an illustrative 18% a year for 12 months.

  • Monthly rate = 18% / 12 = 1.5%
  • EMI = 50,000 × 0.015 × (1.015)^12 / ((1.015)^12 − 1) = 50,000 × 0.015 × 1.1956 / 0.1956 ≈ ₹4,584
  • Total repaid = ₹4,584 × 12 = ₹55,008, so interest ≈ ₹5,008
  • A 2% processing fee (₹1,000) plus 18% GST (₹180) is deducted upfront, so ₹48,820 reaches your account, and all of this is shown in the KFS

Try other amounts and tenures in our EMI calculator.

Scam "Aadhaar loan": A caller or WhatsApp message offers ₹50,000 "on Aadhaar only, in 5 minutes", but first asks for a ₹2,999 "file charge", then ₹4,500 "insurance", then a "GST release fee". You lose ₹7,499 or more and never receive a loan. A genuine lender deducts fees from the disbursal; it does not ask you to pay first.

Aadhaar-based loan scams to watch for

Fake loan offers and "Aadhaar loan in 5 minutes" messages

SMS, WhatsApp and social media ads promise instant loans on Aadhaar with no CIBIL check. Red flags:

  • Upfront fee demanded by UPI to a personal account or a QR code.
  • No lender name, no RBI-registered bank or NBFC behind the app, no KFS.
  • APK links outside the official app store, or pressure to install screen-sharing apps.
  • Requests for your Aadhaar OTP, card PIN or UPI PIN over a call.

Verify the lender against RBI's lists and its directory of digital lending apps, and read our guides on RBI rules for instant loan apps and how to report fake loan app fraud.

Misuse of your Aadhaar and PAN for fake loans

Copies of Aadhaar and PAN left at hotels, SIM shops, job portals or shady loan apps can be used to apply for loans in your name. You may learn about it only when a recovery call comes or your credit score drops. If this happens, follow the steps in fake loan in my name on CIBIL: dispute with the lender and bureau, file a cybercrime complaint, and escalate to the RBI Ombudsman.

How to protect your Aadhaar

Lock your biometrics on UIDAI

As of October 2026, UIDAI lets you lock fingerprint and iris authentication for free:

  1. Go to the myAadhaar portal on uidai.gov.in or open the official mAadhaar app.
  2. Log in with your Aadhaar number and the OTP sent to your registered mobile number.
  3. Choose Lock/Unlock Biometrics and enable the lock.
  4. To use biometrics later (for example at a bank or for a SIM), unlock from the same place and lock again afterwards.

You need a mobile number registered with Aadhaar; if it is not, update it at an Aadhaar Seva Kendra or enrolment centre. UIDAI also offers a 16-digit Virtual ID (VID) that can be used instead of your Aadhaar number for many authentications, and the menu wording on the portal can change, so follow the current UIDAI instructions.

Other habits that help

  • Share a masked Aadhaar (only the last four digits visible) where full Aadhaar is not legally needed.
  • Check Aadhaar authentication history on the myAadhaar portal for use you do not recognise.
  • Never share an Aadhaar OTP with anyone who calls you.
  • Check your credit report every few months and set bureau alerts.
  • For Aadhaar issues call UIDAI on 1947; for financial fraud report at cybercrime.gov.in or call 1930.

Key takeaways

  • "Aadhaar card loan" means a normal loan with Aadhaar used for eKYC; it is not a separate product.
  • Lenders still check your credit score, income and existing EMIs, and usually need PAN and bank statements.
  • Video KYC (V-CIP) is treated as face-to-face KYC; loans opened only on Aadhaar OTP eKYC have tight limits.
  • Loans in minutes are realistic mainly for pre-approved or existing customers; new borrowers usually wait hours to days.
  • Never pay an upfront fee for a loan; genuine lenders show all charges in the KFS and deduct them at disbursal.
  • Lock your Aadhaar biometrics, use masked Aadhaar and check your credit report to stop fake loans in your name.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a loan only on my Aadhaar card?

No. Aadhaar only proves who you are and where you live through eKYC. The lender still checks your credit score, income and existing loans, and almost always asks for PAN and bank details as well.

Is an Aadhaar loan in 5 minutes possible?

Only in narrow cases, such as a pre-approved offer from your own bank or an existing customer of a regulated lender whose credit checks are already done. For a new borrower, approval usually takes from a few hours to a few working days, and a message promising a loan in 5 minutes on Aadhaar alone is a common scam hook.

What documents are needed for an Aadhaar card loan?

Typically Aadhaar for eKYC, PAN, a selfie or video KYC, bank statements or salary slips for income, and bank account details for disbursal. Self-employed applicants may need ITRs and business proof.

Can someone take a loan on my Aadhaar card without my knowledge?

Yes, fraudsters sometimes use leaked Aadhaar and PAN copies to take loans in another person's name. Check your credit report regularly, lock your Aadhaar biometrics, use a masked Aadhaar, and report any unknown loan to the lender, the credit bureau and cybercrime.gov.in.

How do I lock my Aadhaar biometrics?

Log in to the myAadhaar portal on the UIDAI website or the official mAadhaar app with your Aadhaar number and an OTP on your registered mobile, open the Lock/Unlock Biometrics option and enable the lock. It is free, and you can unlock it whenever you need biometric authentication.
