"I moved from one UPI app to another, and now I can't find the payment I made to my landlord in March." If this is you, the one-line fix is: your bank account statement is the permanent record of every UPI payment from every app, so download it for the period you need and search by date and amount; reinstall the old app only if you need its extra details, like the note or the payee's full UPI ID. Nothing is lost when you change apps; the history simply lives in a different place.

This guide shows where each UPI record is stored, how to rebuild a complete history, and how to trace or dispute an old payment, as of October 2026.

Why the history seems to disappear

A UPI app is only the front end. The money moves between bank accounts, and each app keeps its own list of the payments made through it. When you switch apps:

  • the new app shows only payments made from it after you registered;
  • the old app may keep your history on its servers, tied to your mobile number and login;
  • your bank records every debit and credit, whichever app started it.

So "lost" history is usually just in the old app, and always in the bank statement.

Where your UPI records live

Source What it contains How to get it Limits
Bank account statement Every UPI debit and credit from all apps, with date, amount, UPI reference and part of the payee's name Net banking, bank's mobile app, e-statement email or branch Narration is short; notes and full UPI IDs may be cut
Old UPI app Payments made through that app, with notes, payee details and status Reinstall, log in with the same number and link the same account Depends on the app's retention; some offer a statement download
New UPI app Payments made through it since registration Transaction history section Does not show other apps' payments
Bank's own UPI or banking app Often all account transactions, including UPI Mobile banking login Varies by bank
SMS and email alerts Debit and credit alerts with amount and reference Search your inbox for the bank's sender ID Only what you have not deleted
Merchant accounts and email receipts Order details for payments to businesses Merchant's order history Only that merchant
Credit card statement UPI payments made using a RuPay credit card Card issuer's app or statement Only card-funded UPI payments
UPI Lite Small Lite payments Lite history in the app and the bank's daily SMS summary Bank statement shows only the top-up

For recurring payments, NPCI's October 2025 AutoPay enhancements ask UPI apps to show all active mandates on your account, not only those created in that app, though rollout varies by app. That makes it easier to see every AutoPay after you switch; our guide on cancelling UPI AutoPay covers managing them.

Step-by-step: rebuild your payment history

  1. Download bank statements for the full period, as PDF or spreadsheet, from net banking or the bank's app. Our guide on bank statement download shows the usual routes, including e-passbook and older statements.
  2. Filter for UPI entries. Narrations usually start with "UPI" followed by the reference number and a shortened payee name. Our guide on how to read a bank statement explains the codes.
  3. Reinstall the old app if you need more detail. Install it only from the official app store, log in with the same mobile number, and check whether the history returns. If the app offers a statement or history download, save it now.
  4. Collect SMS and email alerts for the months you are reconstructing, especially for UPI Lite payments.
  5. Match everything in one sheet: date, amount, UPI reference, payee, purpose, app used. The bank statement total is your control figure.
  6. Do this for every account linked to UPI. If you paid from two bank accounts, you need both statements.

Worked example: reconciling a month

Sameer switched UPI apps on 15 March. For March, his bank statement shows 46 UPI debits totalling ₹18,450. His new app shows 12 payments totalling ₹5,200.

Source Payments Amount
Bank statement, all UPI debits 46 ₹18,450
New app, from 15 March 12 ₹5,200
Missing from new app 46 − 12 = 34 ₹18,450 − ₹5,200 = ₹13,250
Old app after reinstall 34 ₹13,250

The old app accounted for every missing payment, including the ₹12,000 rent paid on 5 March. If the old app had shown only 30 payments, the remaining four would most likely be UPI Lite top-ups, AutoPay debits or payments made through his bank's own app, all identifiable from the statement narration.

A clean month of records also makes budgeting easier; see how to track monthly expenses.

How to trace or dispute an old payment

  1. Find the debit in your bank statement and note the 12-digit UPI reference (RRN), date and amount.
  2. Raise the issue where it can be traced: in the UPI app you used for that payment, or directly with your bank, which holds the record for every UPI debit on your account. NPCI's dispute system routes complaints from the app to its partner bank and your bank.
  3. Escalate to the bank's grievance or nodal officer if there is no reply, then to the RBI Ombudsman at cms.rbi.org.in (helpline 14448) if the bank does not resolve the complaint within 30 days. File within 90 days of the bank's reply or response deadline under the Integrated Ombudsman Scheme, 2026.
  4. For NPCI-level escalation, use "UPI Help" in your app or the dispute redressal section at npci.org.in.

Note that disputes are time-sensitive. For an unauthorised payment, report to the bank and to 1930 or cybercrime.gov.in immediately; your liability depends on how quickly you report, not on when you find the record.

How long records are kept

Under India's anti-money-laundering rules (PMLA) and RBI's KYC directions, banks must keep transaction records for at least five years from the date of the transaction. How far back you can download statements yourself varies by bank; for older periods, ask the branch, and check the bank's schedule of charges, since some banks charge for duplicate or old statements. UPI apps set their own retention, so if you need an app's history for taxes, a visa application, a rent proof or a dispute, export it while you still use the app.

Ready-to-copy request to your bank

Subject: Request for account statement / UPI transaction details

Dear Sir/Madam,

Please provide the account statement for my account ending [last 4 digits]
for the period [from date] to [to date] in PDF format, to my registered
email [email].

[If tracing a payment] I also request details of the following UPI debit:
Date: [ ] Amount: Rs [ ] UPI reference (if known): [ ]
Please share the beneficiary name and UPI ID / account as per your records
and the transaction status.

[Name], [registered mobile], [customer ID]

What not to do

  • Do not install "UPI history recovery" apps or tools from outside the official app store. They are a common route for malware and screen-sharing scams.
  • Do not share your UPI PIN, OTP or net banking password with anyone offering to retrieve old records.
  • Do not deregister the old app before exporting what you need from it.
  • Do not rely only on app history for important payments like rent, school fees or loan repayments; save the bank statement too.
  • Do not search the web for UPI app "customer care" numbers. Use the help section in the app or the bank's official website.

Key takeaways

  • Your bank statement is the complete, permanent record of UPI payments from every app.
  • Each UPI app shows only its own payments; reinstalling the old app with the same number may restore its history.
  • UPI Lite payments are not in the bank statement; keep the app history and the bank's daily SMS.
  • Banks must keep transaction records for at least five years; download statements regularly anyway.
  • Trace old payments with the 12-digit UPI reference, and escalate unresolved bank complaints to cms.rbi.org.in after 30 days.

Frequently asked questions

Why do I not see old payments in my new UPI app?

Each UPI app shows the payments made through that app. Your new app does not receive another app's history, even though both are linked to the same bank account. The complete record of every UPI debit and credit is in your bank account statement.

Can I recover UPI history after uninstalling the app?

Often yes. Many apps keep history on their servers, so reinstalling the same app and logging in with the same mobile number and account may bring it back, but this depends on the app. Your bank statement has the record either way.

How long does the bank keep my UPI transaction records?

Under India's anti-money-laundering record-keeping rules, banks must keep transaction records for at least five years from the date of transaction. You can usually download recent statements yourself and ask the branch for older ones, which may carry a charge under the bank's schedule.

How do I find the UPI reference number of an old payment?

Look up the debit in your bank statement by date and amount. The narration usually includes the 12-digit UPI reference (RRN) and part of the payee's name or UPI ID. That number is what the bank, app or merchant needs to trace the payment.

Are UPI Lite payments in my bank statement?

No. Only the top-up from your bank account to UPI Lite appears in the statement. Individual Lite payments are listed in the app, and the bank sends a daily SMS summary, so keep those messages if you need the details.
