Remove Old Bank Account From UPI Apps: Safe Steps
Closed or switched bank accounts can stay linked to UPI apps. Move AutoPay and UPI Lite first, remove the account in every app and fix your UPI number.

In this article
"I closed that account months ago, but it still shows up in my UPI app, and my friend's payment went there." If this is you, the fix is: first move everything that depends on the old account (AutoPay mandates, UPI Lite balance, the UPI number used to receive money), then remove the account in each UPI app separately. Removing it from one app does nothing to the others, and uninstalling an app does not unlink anything.
This guide covers the safe order of steps, why the remove option is sometimes missing, and where to complain if money goes to the wrong place.
Why old accounts linger in UPI apps
When you add a bank account to a UPI app, the app's partner bank (the PSP bank) creates a link between your UPI ID and that account through NPCI's network. That link stays until you remove it, even if:
- you have closed the bank account,
- you have opened a new account and use it everywhere else,
- you changed phones but restored the same app, or
- the bank merged into another bank and changed IFSC codes.
Two NPCI clean-up rules exist, but neither is a substitute for removing the account yourself:
- Inactive UPI IDs. NPCI's November 2023 circular asked apps and PSP banks to disable UPI IDs and numbers with no transactions for one year for incoming credits, and to remove those phone numbers from the UPI mapper.
- Recycled mobile numbers. From 31 March 2025, banks and apps must check their records at least weekly against the Mobile Number Revocation List, so UPI linked to disconnected numbers can be deactivated.
Before you remove: the four-item checklist
| Item | Why it matters | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| AutoPay mandates (OTT, SIP, insurance, bills) | Mandates are tied to the account they were set up on | Create new mandates from the new account, then cancel the old ones in the app |
| UPI Lite balance | Lite money sits in the app, funded from the linked account | Withdraw or disable UPI Lite so the balance returns to the bank account |
| UPI number / default receiving account | People paying your mobile number reach whichever account it is mapped to | Change the UPI number mapping to the new account |
| Pending IPO or other blocked mandates | A block on funds may still be live | Let it complete or be revoked before removing the account |
If you skip the mandate step, a SIP or insurance debit may fail. See our guide to cancelling UPI AutoPay mandates for the cancellation flow, and remember that cancelling the mandate does not cancel the subscription with the merchant.
Step by step: removing the account
The menu names differ by app and change with updates, but the flow is similar everywhere.
- Open the app's profile or settings and go to "Bank accounts" or "Payment methods".
- Set another account as primary if the old one is the default. Most apps do not let you remove the primary account while others exist.
- Select the old account and choose "Remove", "Delete" or "Unlink". In NPCI's BHIM app, the Bank Account section lists linked accounts with a Remove option under each.
- Confirm. Some apps ask for your UPI PIN or device lock. You never need to share an OTP or PIN with anyone else for this.
- Check the UPI IDs list. If you had a custom UPI ID linked to the old account, delete it or relink it to the new account.
- Repeat in every UPI app on every phone where you used this account.
- Check your bank's own app. Bank apps that offer UPI may still show the old account's UPI ID; deregister it there as well.
When you are changing phones or selling one
Remove the accounts, deregister UPI in each app, log out and then reset the phone. Uninstalling an app is not enough, because the registration is tied to your mobile number and device binding, not just the installed copy.
Worked example: Ravi's switch
Ravi closed his old salary account on 15 October 2026 after changing jobs. He used three UPI apps. His old account had:
- an OTT mandate of ₹499 a month,
- a SIP mandate of ₹5,000 a month due on the 5th,
- a UPI Lite balance of ₹1,250 in one app.
| Task | Count | Done how |
|---|---|---|
| New mandates to create from new account | 2 | Fresh mandate with the OTT service and the fund house |
| Old mandates to cancel | 2 | AutoPay section of the app where each was created |
| UPI Lite balance to move | ₹1,250 | Withdraw to bank before removing the account |
| Account removals | 3 apps × 1 account = 3 | Bank accounts section in each app |
Ravi's monthly commitments that must move: ₹499 + ₹5,000 = ₹5,499. If he forgets the SIP mandate, the 5 November instalment is attempted on a closed account and fails. Our guide on SIP missed payments explains what follows. Keeping a buffer in the new account, or in a short deposit you can check with our FD calculator, avoids a gap in the first month after a switch.
Common problems and fixes
| Problem | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| No remove option | Primary account, only account, active mandate or Lite balance | Set another primary, move mandates, withdraw Lite |
| Account reappears after removal | App re-fetched accounts linked to your mobile number at the bank | Remove again; ask the bank to delink the old account from the mobile number if it is closed |
| Payments to your number go to the old account | UPI number mapped to the old account | Change UPI number mapping in app settings |
| Money sent to a closed account | Credit cannot be applied | It should be reversed to the sender; for failed person-to-person transfers RBI's deadline is T+1 with ₹100 a day after that |
| Old bank app still shows UPI active | Separate registration in the bank's app | Deregister UPI inside that bank's app |
If UPI stops working altogether after the change, see UPI not working. If your mobile number also changed, update it with the bank first; see change mobile number in bank.
Where to complain
NPCI's dispute redressal order for UPI is: the UPI app you used, then its PSP bank, then your own bank, then NPCI through the complaint section on npci.org.in. If the bank does not give a final reply within 30 days, or you are not satisfied, file with the RBI Ombudsman at cms.rbi.org.in (helpline 14448).
Ready-to-copy complaint message
Subject: Closed account still linked to UPI / credit to closed account
Dear Sir/Madam,
My account [last 4 digits] with [bank] was closed on [date]. It still
appears as linked in [UPI app], and on [date] a UPI credit of ₹[amount],
UTR/RRN [number], from [sender] was directed to this account.
Please (1) confirm the status of this credit and reverse it to the
sender or credit it to my active account [last 4 digits] as per rules,
and (2) delink the closed account from my mobile number and all UPI
registrations.
[Name], [registered mobile]
What not to do
- Do not search the web for "UPI customer care". Fake numbers are common. Use the help section inside the app or the bank's official website.
- Do not share your UPI PIN, OTP or screen with anyone offering to "remove the account for you". Removing an account never needs another person.
- Do not install screen-sharing apps on a caller's request.
- Do not close the old account first and sort out mandates later. Move the mandates while the old account is still open.
- Do not assume uninstalling an app unlinks your account.
Key takeaways
- Removing a bank account from UPI is per app; repeat it in every app and in the bank's own app.
- Move AutoPay mandates, withdraw UPI Lite and remap your UPI number before removing the account.
- The remove option is usually hidden for primary accounts or accounts with active mandates or Lite balance.
- NPCI disables long-inactive UPI IDs and recycled numbers, but that is not a substitute for removing the account yourself.
- Escalate through the app, PSP bank, your bank and NPCI, then cms.rbi.org.in after 30 days.
Frequently asked questions
Does removing a bank account from one UPI app remove it from all apps?
No. Each UPI app keeps its own link to your bank account. You have to remove the account separately in every app where it was added.
Why is the remove option not showing for my bank account in the UPI app?
Usually because it is set as the primary or default account, has active AutoPay mandates, holds a UPI Lite balance, or is the only account in the app. Set another account as primary, move or cancel the mandates and withdraw the Lite balance, then try again.
If I close my bank account, will UPI apps remove it automatically?
Not reliably. Payments to or from a closed account fail, but the account may still appear in your apps. Remove it yourself and move any payments that point to it.
Will my AutoPay mandates move automatically to my new bank account?
No. A UPI AutoPay mandate is tied to the account it was set up on. Create a new mandate from the new account with the merchant and then cancel the old one in the app.
Someone paid my mobile number but the money went to my old account. What should I do?
Your UPI number is still mapped to the old account. Change the UPI number or default receiving account in your app settings. If the old account is closed, a payment to it fails and should be reversed to the sender under RBI's failed-transaction timelines.
