The Central Sector Interest Subsidy (CSIS) pays the entire interest on your education loan during the moratorium (course period plus one year) if your family earns up to ₹4.5 lakh a year and you study a technical or professional course at an accredited institution in India. For loans taken from 1 April 2022 it covers up to ₹10 lakh of principal, you do not file a separate application, and the money reaches your loan account through a Digital Rupee wallet.

All rules below are as of October 2026, based on the Ministry of Education's PM-USP CSIS guidelines, Canara Bank's nodal-bank FAQ and a July 2026 PIB backgrounder. The scheme is active: for FY 2025-26, Canara Bank received 4,14,844 claims worth ₹892.81 crore relating to 2024-25.

  • Recognised institution: NAAC or NBA accredited, a centrally funded technical institution, or one approved by the statutory regulator for that course.
  • No other subsidy or scholarship: a student availing another central or state scholarship, fee reimbursement or interest subvention cannot also take CSIS.
  • The subsidy can stop if you discontinue the course or are expelled for academic or disciplinary reasons.

CSIS vs PM Vidyalaxmi

Family income Which scheme What you get
Up to ₹4.5 lakh PM-USP CSIS (eligible courses) Full moratorium interest on up to ₹10 lakh
Above ₹4.5 lakh to ₹8 lakh PM Vidyalaxmi (listed QHEIs only) 3% interest subvention on up to ₹10 lakh
Above ₹8 lakh Neither subsidy Collateral-free PM Vidyalaxmi loan at a listed college; tax deduction on interest

CSIS is now administered through the same PM-Vidyalaxmi portal. Details of the other scheme are in our PM Vidyalaxmi education loan guide.

Worked example: how much CSIS saves

Arjun joins a four-year B.Tech at an NBA-accredited college. His family income certificate shows ₹4 lakh a year. He borrows ₹8 lakh, disbursed as ₹2 lakh at the start of each year, at an illustrative 8.5%. The moratorium is 4 years of study plus 1 year = 5 years.

Using simple interest:

  • Year 1 tranche: ₹2 lakh × 5 years = 10 lakh-years
  • Year 2 tranche: ₹2 lakh × 4 years = 8 lakh-years
  • Year 3 tranche: ₹2 lakh × 3 years = 6 lakh-years
  • Year 4 tranche: ₹2 lakh × 2 years = 4 lakh-years
  • Total = 28 lakh-years × 8.5% = ₹2,38,000 of moratorium interest

Under CSIS the government pays all ₹2,38,000. Over a 10-year repayment at 8.5% (illustrative):

Situation Principal at EMI start EMI Total interest over 10 years
With CSIS ₹8,00,000 about ₹9,919 about ₹3,90,263
Without CSIS, interest added to loan ₹10,38,000 about ₹12,870 about ₹5,06,366

So CSIS saves the ₹2,38,000 directly and avoids interest on interest later, close to ₹3.5 lakh in total in this example. Banks often compound monthly during the moratorium, so real numbers will differ. Run your own figures in the EMI calculator.

Documents needed

  • Income certificate of the family from the designated state/UT authority (submitted once, at sanction or first disbursement; you need not resubmit it every year)
  • Admission letter and fee structure from the institution
  • Proof the institution or course is NAAC/NBA accredited or regulator-approved (the bank usually checks this)
  • Aadhaar, PAN, marksheets and the usual education loan documents
  • Bank account and loan account details

How to get the CSIS subsidy, step by step

  1. Apply for the education loan at a scheduled bank, ideally through the PM-Vidyalaxmi portal (pmvidyalaxmi.co.in), and tell the branch you are claiming CSIS.
  2. Submit the income certificate at the time of sanction or first disbursement.
  3. Bank checks eligibility. The disbursing branch confirms the course, institution and income.
  4. Bank files the claim on the portal when the annual claim window opens. The window opens on Ministry of Education instructions, and IBA informs banks of the dates.
  5. Activate the PM-Vidyalaxmi Digital Rupee wallet if asked. As of 22 July 2026, 35,777 wallets were active and ₹57.66 crore of subsidy had been disbursed through them.
  6. Subsidy reaches your loan account and reduces the outstanding interest.
  7. Check status on Canara Bank's subsidy enquiry page (csis.canarabank.bank.in) and in your loan statement.

There is no fee at any stage. Ignore anyone offering to "get CSIS approved" for a charge, and do not share OTPs or wallet credentials.

Common reasons a CSIS claim fails

  • Income certificate missing or from a non-designated authority, or showing income above ₹4.5 lakh.
  • Branch did not upload the claim within the annual window. Follow up before the window closes.
  • Course or college not eligible, for example a non-professional course or an institute without NAAC/NBA accreditation or regulator approval.
  • Double benefit: you are also getting a scholarship, fee reimbursement or another interest subsidy.
  • Loan not under the IBA model scheme or taken from a lender outside the scheme.
  • Course discontinued or the student expelled.

If your loan is with a private lender or the bank delays, the steps in education loan moratorium explain how interest builds up meanwhile.

How to complain

  1. Write to the branch that disbursed the loan, quoting your loan account number and the year of claim.
  2. If unsatisfied, escalate to the bank's grievance redressal officer or head office.
  3. Use the grievance facility on the PM-Vidyalaxmi portal.
  4. If the bank does not resolve it within 30 days, complain to the RBI Integrated Ombudsman at cms.rbi.org.in.
  5. For scheme-level issues, file on pgportal.gov.in (CPGRAMS) against the Ministry of Education.

Key takeaways

  • CSIS pays 100% of education loan interest during the moratorium for families earning up to ₹4.5 lakh a year, as of October 2026.
  • It covers up to ₹10 lakh of principal on loans from 1 April 2022, for technical and professional courses at accredited or regulator-approved institutions in India.
  • No separate student application: submit the income certificate at sanction and the bank files the claim each year.
  • You cannot combine CSIS with PM Vidyalaxmi subvention, scholarships or fee reimbursement.
  • On an ₹8 lakh loan, the subsidy can save around ₹2.38 lakh of moratorium interest, plus interest on interest later.

Frequently asked questions

What is the CSIS scheme for education loans?

The Central Sector Interest Subsidy (CSIS), now run as PM-USP CSIS by the Ministry of Education, pays the full interest on an education loan during the moratorium period for students from families earning up to ₹4.5 lakh a year who study technical or professional courses in India.

What is the maximum loan covered under CSIS?

For loans taken from 1 April 2022 under the PM-USP CSIS guidelines, interest subsidy is given on up to ₹10 lakh of principal. If your loan is larger, only the interest on the first ₹10 lakh is covered.

Do I need to apply separately for CSIS subsidy?

No separate application is needed from the student. You submit the income certificate when the loan is sanctioned or the first instalment is disbursed, and the bank branch files the claim on the portal when the annual claim window opens.

How can I check my CSIS subsidy status?

Canara Bank, the nodal bank, runs a subsidy enquiry page at csis.canarabank.bank.in. The subsidy is credited through the PM-Vidyalaxmi Digital Rupee wallet to your loan account, so you can also check your loan statement.

Can I get CSIS and PM Vidyalaxmi subsidy together?

No. A student can take only one interest subsidy. If family income is up to ₹4.5 lakh and the course qualifies, CSIS pays the full moratorium interest; between ₹4.5 lakh and ₹8 lakh, PM Vidyalaxmi pays 3% at listed colleges.

Does CSIS cover study abroad?

No. CSIS covers technical and professional courses at recognised institutions in India only.
