UPI AutoPay Debited After Cancelling? How to Get It Back
Money still debited after cancelling UPI AutoPay? Find which mandate actually charged you, stop it for good and get the debit reversed via app, bank and RBI.

In this article
"I cancelled the OTT AutoPay last month, but ₹649 was debited again this morning." If that is you, the fix has two parts: find out which mandate actually took the money, because it is often not the one you cancelled, and then dispute the debit with proof of your cancellation. If your UPI mandate was revoked or paused before the debit date, the debit was not authorised and your bank should reverse it.
This guide covers why debits continue after cancellation, how to stop them for good, how to get your money back as of October 2026, and a complaint you can copy. For the basic steps to cancel or pause a mandate, see our guide on how to cancel a UPI AutoPay mandate.
Why it happens
A debit after cancellation almost always comes from one of these situations:
| Cause | How to recognise it | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Mandate revoked in the wrong UPI app | Mandate still shows "active" in another UPI app linked to the same account | Revoke it in that app too, with your PIN |
| Cancellation never completed | No revoke confirmation SMS or email; status not "revoked" | Revoke again and save the confirmation |
| It was a card mandate, not UPI | Debit appears on your credit or debit card statement | Cancel the standing instruction with the card issuer or merchant |
| It was a NACH or e-NACH bank mandate | Statement shows NACH, ECS or ACH with a mandate ID | Ask your bank to cancel the NACH mandate in writing |
| Merchant billed you through a separate payment | Debit is a one-time UPI payment or a new mandate you approved | Check if you re-subscribed or approved a request |
| Debit was already scheduled | Pre-debit alert arrived before you cancelled | Dispute; but cancel well before the next date |
| Pause period ended | You paused, not revoked, and the end date passed | Revoke, or extend the pause |
| Two mandates for one service | Old and new plans each created a mandate | Revoke both |
One more point people miss: revoking the mandate does not cancel the subscription. The merchant may still show dues, and may try another saved payment method. Cancel the subscription in the merchant's app as well.
What the rules say
As of October 2026, RBI's e-mandate framework lets you withdraw a mandate at any time and requires your bank or app to send a pre-debit notification at least 24 hours before each debit, with an option to opt out. NPCI's UPI AutoPay rules let you pause or revoke a mandate from your UPI app, and say a merchant must not override a pause from its side. Under NPCI's October 2025 enhancements, UPI apps are being asked to show all your active mandates, not only those created in that app, though rollout varies.
A debit after a valid revoke or during a pause is therefore not authorised. You are entitled to dispute it.
Step-by-step: stop the debits and get money back
Today
- Identify the debit. Open the bank SMS or statement entry. Note the date, amount, merchant name and the reference number. A UPI reference or "UPI-Mandate" label means UPI AutoPay; "NACH", "ECS" or "ACH" means a bank mandate; a card statement entry means a card mandate.
- Check every UPI app. Open the AutoPay or Mandates section in each UPI app on your phone, and in your bank's own app. Revoke any mandate for that merchant still marked active, and confirm with your UPI PIN.
- Save proof of cancellation. Screenshot the revoked status, the date and time, and any confirmation SMS or email. For the earlier cancellation, find its confirmation too; this is the key evidence.
- Cancel with the merchant. Turn off auto-renew in the merchant's account settings and save the confirmation.
Within the next few days
- Raise a dispute in the UPI app on that exact debit. Choose a reason close to "mandate revoked but amount debited" or "unauthorised debit", and attach your proof.
- Ask the merchant for a refund at the same time. Many merchants refund a debit after cancellation quickly once shown the revoke screenshot.
- Complain to your bank if it is a NACH or card debit, or if the UPI complaint does not move. Ask it to reverse the debit and confirm the mandate is cancelled in its system. Report unexpected electronic debits promptly; faster reporting gives you stronger protection under RBI's customer liability rules.
If it is still unresolved
- Escalate to the bank's grievance or nodal officer with your complaint numbers.
- Escalate to NPCI for a UPI mandate, using the "UPI Help" option in your app or the dispute redressal section at npci.org.in.
- Go to the RBI Ombudsman at cms.rbi.org.in (helpline 14448) if the bank rejects your complaint or does not reply within 30 days. File within 90 days of the bank's reply or response deadline under the Integrated Ombudsman Scheme, 2026. See bank not resolving your complaint.
- If you never approved the mandate at all, treat it as fraud: block UPI through your bank and report to 1930 or cybercrime.gov.in.
Timelines and escalation at a glance
| Level | Where | When to move on |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | UPI app or merchant | No resolution within a few working days |
| 2 | Your bank and its grievance officer | No reply or rejection within 30 days |
| 3 | NPCI (UPI Help, npci.org.in) | Alongside or after the bank, for UPI mandates |
| 4 | RBI Ombudsman, cms.rbi.org.in | After 30 days, within 90 days of the bank's reply or deadline |
| Fraud | 1930 or cybercrime.gov.in, plus bank | Immediately |
Real-life example
Neha subscribed to a streaming plan at ₹649 a month through UPI AutoPay in one app. On 2 September she revoked the mandate there and got a confirmation SMS. On 5 October, ₹649 was debited again.
- Her bank statement showed "UPI-Mandate" with the same merchant name, so it was a UPI mandate.
- Checking her other UPI app, she found a second active mandate for the same merchant. She had upgraded her plan in June through that app, which created a new mandate.
- She revoked it, raised a dispute on the 5 October debit, and emailed the merchant with both screenshots.
- The merchant refunded ₹649 on 9 October.
Her lesson: one revoke stopped only one of two mandates. Had the second mandate been revoked before 5 October, the debit would have been unauthorised and her bank would have had to reverse it. Over a year, a missed ₹649 mandate costs 12 × ₹649 = ₹7,788, so checking every app is worth five minutes.
Sample complaint
Subject: UPI AutoPay debit after mandate revocation - Ref [UPI reference]
Dear Sir/Madam,
On [date], Rs [amount] was debited from my account ending [last 4 digits]
through a UPI AutoPay mandate to [merchant name, UPI ID].
UPI Reference: [number]. Mandate ID/UMN (if shown): [number].
I revoked / paused this mandate on [date] in [app name], before the
debit date. Proof of revocation is attached. This debit was therefore
not authorised by me.
Please:
1. Reverse Rs [amount] to my account.
2. Confirm in writing that the mandate is revoked and no further debits
will be processed.
Previous complaint number(s): [if any]
Name: [your name] Registered mobile: [number]
For a NACH debit, replace "UPI AutoPay" with "NACH mandate" and add the mandate reference from your statement.
What not to do
- Do not assume one revoke covers every app. Check all UPI apps and your bank's app.
- Do not just pause if you never want the service again. Pauses end automatically.
- Do not ignore pre-debit alerts. They are your last chance to opt out before the money goes.
- Do not block your whole account or card to stop one merchant unless it is fraud; revoke the mandate instead.
- Do not search online for a merchant's "refund helpline". Use the help section in the app or its official website.
- Do not wait months. The Ombudsman window is 90 days after the bank's reply or deadline.
If UPI itself is failing while you try to revoke, see UPI not working.
Key takeaways
- Most debits after cancellation come from another mandate: a second UPI app, a card standing instruction or a bank NACH mandate.
- A debit after a valid revoke or during a pause is not authorised; dispute it with proof of cancellation.
- Banks must send a pre-debit alert at least 24 hours before each AutoPay debit, as of October 2026.
- Cancel the subscription with the merchant as well as revoking the mandate.
- Escalate in order: UPI app and merchant, bank, NPCI, then the RBI Ombudsman at cms.rbi.org.in after 30 days; for mandates you never approved, report to 1930.
Frequently asked questions
Why was money debited after I cancelled UPI AutoPay?
Usually the debit came from a different mandate: one in another UPI app, a card standing instruction, or a bank NACH mandate. Sometimes the debit was already scheduled before the revoke went through, or the cancellation was never confirmed with your UPI PIN.
Can I get money back if AutoPay debited after cancellation?
Yes, if the mandate was validly revoked or paused before the debit date, the debit was not authorised and your bank should reverse it. Raise a complaint in your UPI app with proof of revocation, then escalate to the bank, NPCI and the RBI Ombudsman if needed.
How do I find which mandate charged me?
Open the debit in your bank statement or SMS. A UPI AutoPay debit carries a UPI reference and merchant name, a card debit shows on the card statement, and a NACH or ECS debit usually shows those letters in the description with a mandate reference.
Does pausing a UPI AutoPay mandate stop debits?
Yes. During the pause period, no debit should happen, and NPCI rules say a merchant must not override a pause from its side. Check the pause dates you set, because debits restart automatically once the pause ends.
How long do I have to complain to the RBI Ombudsman?
You must first complain to your bank. If it rejects the complaint or does not reply within 30 days, you can file at cms.rbi.org.in within 90 days of the bank's reply or response deadline under the 2026 scheme.
