"My UPI payment failed and the app just says U30. What does that even mean?" The short answer: UPI error codes are short responses from NPCI's system telling you where a payment broke: your bank, the payee's bank, your PIN, your balance or a limit. Once you know the code, you know whether to retry, wait, change something or raise a dispute. If money left your account despite the error, it must come back within RBI's timelines.

This guide decodes the most common codes, as of October 2026, and what to do for each. If your account was debited on a failed payment, read UPI payment failed but money debited for the full refund process.

Why error codes appear

Every UPI payment passes through four parties: your UPI app, your bank (the remitter), NPCI's switch and the payee's bank (the beneficiary). Each step returns a response code. Your app usually translates it into plain language, but many apps show the raw code, and bank statements or support chats often refer to it. The codes are defined by NPCI; the meanings below match lists published by banks, payment gateways and brokers that use NPCI's code set.

Codes fall into two groups:

  • Declined: the payment did not go through. Fix the cause and retry.
  • Pending or deemed: the result is unknown, usually because a bank timed out. Do not pay again; wait for the final status.

Common UPI error codes and fixes

Code What it means What to do
U30 Debit failed at your (remitter) bank Retry later or use another linked account
U16 Risk threshold exceeded or limit exceeded Try a smaller amount, wait, or check limits with your bank
U69 Collect request expired Ask the payee to send a fresh request, or pay by scanning their QR
U67 Debit timeout at your bank Check your statement before retrying; reversal is automatic if debited
U28 PSP (UPI app's partner bank) not available Retry after some time or use another UPI app
U66 Device fingerprint mismatch Re-register UPI on this phone; check the SIM linked to your bank
U09 Request authorisation timed out Retry; check your network
UT Remitter or issuer (your bank) unavailable, timeout Wait and retry; check whether you were debited
BT Acquirer or beneficiary (payee's bank) unavailable, timeout Treated as pending. Do not pay again; wait for final status
RB Credit reversal timeout Pending reversal; wait for the final status before disputing
ZM Invalid or incorrect UPI PIN Re-enter carefully; reset the PIN if forgotten
Z6 Number of PIN tries exceeded Wait for the block to lift, usually about 24 hours, or reset the PIN
Z9 Insufficient funds in your account Add money or use another account
Z8 Per-transaction limit set by your bank exceeded Pay a smaller amount or split over time within limits
Z7 Transaction frequency limit set by your bank exceeded Wait until the next day or use another account
ZA Transaction declined by you You declined or cancelled; start a fresh payment
ZH Invalid UPI ID (virtual address) Check the UPI ID spelling or scan the QR
ZG UPI ID restricted by the customer The payee has restricted it; ask for another UPI ID
ZE Transaction not permitted to this UPI ID by the PSP Ask the payee for another UPI ID or use a bank transfer
XH Account does not exist Re-link the account in the app; confirm the account is active
YE Your account is blocked or frozen Contact your bank; see the note below
ZX Inactive or dormant account Reactivate the account with your bank
B1 Mobile number linked to the account changed or removed Update the mobile number with your bank, then re-register UPI
AM UPI PIN not set Set the UPI PIN with your debit card or Aadhaar OTP
YD Do not honour, declined by the payee's bank Ask the payee to check with their bank; try another account
XY Your bank's core banking system offline Retry later

A few notes on the harder ones. For U16, Z7 and Z8, our guide to UPI limit exceeded or blocked explains daily and per-transaction limits. For ZM and Z6, see forgot UPI PIN. For YE and ZX, the account itself has a problem, often a KYC lapse, a freeze order or dormancy, so the fix is with the bank branch rather than the app. If the whole app or bank seems down, our UPI not working checklist helps you tell outage from account problem.

Codes not listed here exist, and some apps show their own codes. If your app shows a code without a meaning, the bank's customer care can decode it from the transaction reference.

Worked example: a BT error that turned into compensation

Sneha paid ₹3,000 to an online store by UPI on 10 October. The app showed error BT and the status stayed "pending". Her account was debited, and the store said it had not received the money.

  • BT means the payee's side timed out. She correctly did not pay again.
  • This is a failed merchant payment, so RBI's turnaround time is T+5: 10 October + 5 days = 15 October.
  • The money was reversed on 18 October, 3 days late (16, 17 and 18 October).
  • Compensation owed under RBI's 2019 failed-transaction rules: 3 × ₹100 = ₹300, which the bank should credit on its own.

Had it been a payment to a friend, the deadline would have been T+1 (11 October), the delay 7 days and the compensation ₹700.

If she had paid through UPI on a RuPay credit card instead, the debit would sit on her card statement. Disputing it before the due date matters: if she left ₹3,000 unpaid without a dispute, a typical 3.6% monthly rate would add ₹108 in interest plus ₹19.44 GST, about ₹127.44 a month. Check the cost of any balance in the credit card interest calculator.

Step-by-step fix

  1. Read the code and the status. "Failed" or "declined" means retry after fixing the cause. "Pending" or "deemed" means wait.
  2. Check your bank statement, not just the app, to see whether money actually left the account.
  3. Fix the cause from the table: PIN, balance, limit, UPI ID or account status.
  4. Do not retry a pending payment to the same payee. You risk paying twice.
  5. Note the 12-digit UPI reference number (UTR/RRN) for any debited failure.
  6. Wait for the turnaround time: T+1 for person-to-person, T+5 for merchant payments.
  7. Raise a dispute in the UPI app if the money has not come back, using the "Help" or "Raise complaint" option on that transaction.

Where to complain and timelines

  1. UPI app, then your bank: NPCI's dispute process runs from the app to its partner bank and to your bank. Your bank is responsible for reversing a debited failure.
  2. Grievance or nodal officer: escalate with the UPI reference number if there is no fix after the turnaround time.
  3. NPCI: you can also lodge a complaint on NPCI's UPI dispute redressal page if the bank and app do not resolve it.
  4. RBI Ombudsman: if the bank does not reply within 30 days or rejects the complaint, file at cms.rbi.org.in (helpline 14448), within 90 days under the Integrated Ombudsman Scheme, 2026.

Sample complaint text

Subject: Failed UPI transaction with error [code] - UPI Ref [12 digits]

On [date] at [time], I made a UPI payment of Rs [amount] from my account
ending [XXXX] to [payee / UPI ID]. The app showed error [code] and status
[failed/pending]. My account was debited, but the payee has not received
the money and it has not been reversed within the RBI turnaround time
(T+1 / T+5).

Please reverse the amount and credit compensation of Rs 100 per day of
delay as per RBI's circular on harmonisation of TAT for failed
transactions (20 September 2019).

What not to do

  • Do not pay again on a pending code like BT or RB until the final status shows.
  • Do not keep guessing the PIN after ZM. A few wrong tries trigger Z6 and a temporary block.
  • Do not call "UPI helpline" numbers from web searches. Use the help section in your app or your bank's official site.
  • Do not share your PIN or OTP with anyone offering to fix an error.

Key takeaways

  • UPI error codes show where a payment failed: your bank, the payee's bank, your PIN, your balance or a limit.
  • Declined codes such as U30, ZM, Z9 and Z8 need a fix and a retry; pending codes such as BT and RB need patience, not a second payment.
  • Debited failures must be reversed by T+1 for transfers and T+5 for merchant payments, with ₹100 a day for delay.
  • Keep the UPI reference number and dispute in the app first, then the bank and nodal officer.
  • Go to cms.rbi.org.in if the bank does not resolve it within 30 days.

Frequently asked questions

What does UPI error U30 mean?

U30 means the debit failed at the payer's bank, often because of a temporary problem at that bank. Retry after some time or use another linked account. If money was debited, it should be reversed automatically within RBI's turnaround time.

What is UPI error U16?

U16 means a risk threshold or limit was exceeded, so the payment was blocked by a risk or limit check. Try a smaller amount, wait a few hours, or check your limits with your bank.

What does BT mean in a UPI transaction?

BT means the beneficiary or acquirer side did not respond in time. The transaction is usually shown as pending, and you should not pay again until it is resolved, because the money may still reach the payee or be reversed.

What do ZM and Z6 mean?

ZM means the UPI PIN entered was wrong. Z6 means the number of PIN attempts has been exceeded, so UPI is temporarily blocked for that account. Wait for the block to lift, usually about 24 hours, or reset the PIN with your debit card details.

My UPI payment failed with an error but money was debited. What now?

Do not pay again until you check the status. A failed transfer to a person must be reversed by T+1 day and a failed merchant payment within T+5 days under RBI rules, with ₹100 a day compensation for delay beyond that.
