To act as your own subscription manager and track and cut recurring payments, list every repeating debit from the last three months of bank and card statements, check the mandate lists in your UPI apps and card issuer app, cancel what you do not use with both the merchant and the mandate, and put the rest on a one-page monthly bill calendar. As of October 2026, RBI's e-mandate rules require an alert at least 24 hours before each recurring debit and let you withdraw a mandate at any time, so the tools to control these payments already exist. This guide shows how to use them and how much you can realistically save.

Recurring payments are easy to forget because they need no action from you. A ₹199 app you stopped using in March still costs ₹2,388 a year. Combined with a few memberships and free trials that converted to paid plans, the leak can be larger than most single expenses in your budget.

Step 1: Track bank transactions for repeating debits

Start with data, not memory. Download the last three months of statements for every savings account and credit card. Our guide on how to read a bank statement explains the narration codes.

Look for these patterns:

What you see in the statement What it usually is
"UPI AutoPay", "UPI-MANDATE" or a merchant name with the same amount each month UPI AutoPay mandate
"SI" or "Standing instruction" on a card statement Card e-mandate (recurring card payment)
"NACH", "ACH DR" or "ECS" Bank mandate, often for loan EMIs, SIPs or insurance
Charges from an app store Subscriptions billed through your phone's app store
"BBPS" or "Bharat Connect" reference A bill paid through the bill payment network
Same amount on the same date, no mandate label Auto-transfer or standing instruction set up in your own bank

Highlight every repeating debit and write each in one list with its amount, date, frequency and the account or card it hits. This list becomes your recurring payments tracker.

Step 2: Find every mandate

Statements show what was debited; mandate lists show what can be debited. Check all of these:

  • UPI apps: Open each UPI app you use and look for AutoPay, Mandates or Manage payments. Under NPCI's 2025 changes, UPI apps are being asked to show all your active UPI AutoPay mandates, not only those created in that app, though rollout varies by app.
  • Card issuer app or net banking: Look for a section such as standing instructions, e-mandates or recurring payments for each credit and debit card.
  • Bank net banking: Check registered NACH/e-NACH mandates and any standing instructions or scheduled transfers you created.
  • Phone app store: Subscriptions bought inside apps are often billed and cancelled through the app store, not the bank.

Note the maximum amount on each mandate. A ₹149 plan with a high ceiling allows larger debits than you may expect.

Step 3: Audit and cancel subscriptions

For each item on your list, ask three questions: Did I use it in the last 30 days? Is there a cheaper plan or a free alternative? Is someone else in the family paying for the same thing?

Then sort each one into keep, downgrade or cancel.

How to cancel properly

Cancelling has two parts, and doing only one is the most common mistake:

  1. Cancel with the merchant. Turn off auto-renew or cancel the plan in the app or website. Take a screenshot of the confirmation.
  2. Revoke the payment mandate.
    • UPI AutoPay: in the UPI app, choose the mandate and Revoke or Cancel, then confirm with your UPI PIN. Our step-by-step guide on cancelling a UPI AutoPay mandate covers the main apps.
    • Card standing instruction: cancel it in the card issuer's app or net banking, or call customer care.
    • NACH mandate: ask your bank to cancel it, usually after closing the loan or SIP with the lender or fund house first.

If money is still debited after you cancel, it usually came from a second mandate in another app, a card instruction or a debit already scheduled before you revoked it. Follow our guide on UPI AutoPay debited after cancel to dispute it.

What RBI's e-mandate rules give you

RBI consolidated its recurring payment rules in April 2026 as the Digital Payments – E-mandate Framework, 2026. It covers cards, prepaid instruments (wallets) and UPI. Key points as of October 2026:

Rule What it means for you
Registration, modification and withdrawal need additional authentication A mandate cannot be set up or changed without your OTP or UPI PIN
Later debits up to ₹15,000 per transaction run without fresh authentication Higher amounts need you to approve each debit
Higher limit of ₹1 lakh for insurance premiums, mutual fund subscriptions and credit card bill payments Larger debits in these categories can also run without fresh authentication
Pre-debit notification at least 24 hours before each debit You get the merchant name, amount and date, with an option to opt out
Withdraw any time You can cancel a mandate whenever you want
No charge to customers for e-mandates Banks should not charge you for registering or using them

Treat every pre-debit alert as a prompt: if you do not recognise it or no longer want the service, opt out or cancel before the debit date. Loan EMIs often run on NACH instead, which follows separate NPCI rules, so cancel those only after the loan is closed.

Bill payment tracking with Bharat Connect (BBPS)

Bharat Connect, earlier called Bharat BillPay or BBPS, is the bill payment system conceptualised by RBI and run by NPCI Bharat BillPay Ltd. Many bank apps, UPI apps and net banking portals use it for categories such as electricity, gas, water, DTH, broadband and postpaid mobile, insurance premiums, loan EMIs, FASTag, municipal taxes, education fees and credit card bills. Available categories and billers vary by app.

Why it helps as a bill payment tracker:

  • Bill fetch: For many billers you add your consumer number once, and the app fetches the due amount and due date.
  • Reminders and auto-pay: Many apps let you set reminders or AutoPay on fetched bills.
  • Standard reference: Each payment gets a transaction reference you can use to raise a complaint if the biller does not update the payment.
  • One place: Keeping most bills in one app makes it easier to see the month at a glance.

For credit card bills, also know your statement and due dates; see how the credit card billing cycle works.

Build a monthly bill calendar

Put every recurring payment on one page, sorted by date. Align as many as you can to just after salary day so money is always there before the debit.

Date Payment Amount (₹) Mode Account / card
1st Rent 18,000 Bank transfer Salary account
3rd Home loan EMI 22,000 NACH Salary account
5th SIP 5,000 UPI AutoPay / NACH Salary account
7th Electricity 1,800 Bharat Connect Salary account
10th Broadband and mobile postpaid 1,200 Bharat Connect Credit card
15th Streaming and music plans 618 UPI AutoPay Credit card
20th Credit card bill (full amount) Varies Bank app Salary account
Yearly Health and term insurance As per policy Auto-debit Salary account

Illustrative figures. Keep a small buffer in the account before each date so a mandate does not bounce, which can attract charges. Review the calendar once a quarter and whenever a price changes.

How much can you save? A worked example

Here is an illustrative audit of one household's subscriptions:

Subscription Monthly cost (₹) Used last month? Decision
Video streaming plan A 499 Yes Keep
Video streaming plan B 299 No Cancel
Music streaming 119 Yes Keep
Cloud storage 130 Yes Keep
Gym membership 1,500 No Cancel
Food delivery membership 149 Once Cancel
News app 199 No Cancel
Total 2,895

Cancelled: ₹299 + ₹1,500 + ₹149 + ₹199 = ₹2,147 a month, or ₹2,147 × 12 = ₹25,764 a year.

If that ₹2,147 goes into a monthly SIP for 10 years at an assumed 12% a year (illustrative; mutual fund returns are not guaranteed), you would invest ₹2,57,640 and could build roughly ₹4.99 lakh. Try your own numbers on the SIP calculator.

Other quick wins: switch plans you use daily to annual billing if the yearly price is lower, share family plans where allowed, and set a reminder two days before every free trial ends. Small recurring increases in spending are a form of lifestyle inflation, so review them as your income rises.

Key takeaways

  • Track bank transactions for three months to find every repeating debit, then check mandate lists in UPI apps, card issuer apps, net banking and the app store.
  • To cancel a subscription, cancel with the merchant and also revoke the UPI, card or NACH mandate.
  • As of October 2026, RBI's e-mandate framework requires a 24-hour pre-debit alert, lets you withdraw a mandate any time, and does not allow fees for e-mandates.
  • Bharat Connect (BBPS) helps you fetch, pay and track most household bills in one place.
  • A one-page monthly bill calendar and a quarterly review keep recurring payments under control; cutting ₹2,000-3,000 a month adds up to ₹25,000-35,000 a year.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find all my active subscriptions?

Go through the last three months of bank and credit card statements and mark every repeating debit. Then check the AutoPay or Mandates section of your UPI apps, the standing instruction or e-mandate section of your card issuer's app, and app store subscriptions on your phone.

How do I cancel a subscription that auto-debits my account?

Cancel the subscription with the merchant, then revoke the payment mandate: in your UPI app for UPI AutoPay, in your card issuer's app or net banking for card standing instructions, and through your bank for NACH mandates. Keep screenshots of both cancellations.

Will I get an alert before a recurring payment is debited?

Yes. As of October 2026, RBI's e-mandate framework requires a pre-debit notification at least 24 hours before each recurring debit on cards, UPI and prepaid instruments, with an option to opt out of that debit or cancel the mandate.

What is BBPS or Bharat Connect?

Bharat Connect, earlier called Bharat BillPay, is the RBI-conceptualised bill payment system run by NPCI Bharat BillPay Ltd. It lets you pay and track bills such as electricity, gas, water, DTH, broadband, insurance premiums, loan EMIs and credit card bills through many bank and payment apps.

How much can I save by cancelling subscriptions?

It depends on what you hold, but many households find ₹1,000 to ₹3,000 a month in unused plans and memberships. In our illustrative example, cutting ₹2,147 a month saves about ₹25,764 a year.
