An IPO registrar, formally the registrar to the issue, is the SEBI-registered firm that processes IPO applications, finalises allotment with the stock exchange, credits shares to demat accounts and handles investor complaints. In India the busiest registrars are KFin Technologies, MUFG Intime India (formerly Link Intime India) and Bigshare Services, with firms such as Cameo, Skyline, Purva Sharegistry, Integrated Registry and Maashitla handling many other issues. The registrar for each IPO is named in its offer document; that is the site to use for allotment status and grievances.
Details below are as of October 2026.
What a registrar does in an IPO
| Stage | Registrar's job |
|---|---|
| Bidding (T−2 to T) | Receives bid data from BSE, NSE and banks (SCSBs) |
| T+1 | Validates bids, removes technical rejections, prepares the basis of allotment with the designated stock exchange |
| T+1 / T+2 | Runs the lottery or proportionate allotment approved by the exchange |
| T+2 | Sends corporate action to NSDL and CDSL to credit shares; triggers unblocking of funds through the sponsor bank and SCSBs |
| After listing | Handles investor grievances on the issue; often continues as the company's share transfer agent (RTA) |
The registrar does not decide who gets shares at its own discretion. The basis of allotment is approved by the designated stock exchange under SEBI's ICDR rules; for an oversubscribed retail portion, that means one minimum lot to as many applicants as possible, by lottery.

This is not a complete list. SEBI publishes the full list of registered "Registrars to an Issue and Share Transfer Agents" on sebi.gov.in under intermediaries. Always take the registrar's web address from the offer document or the registrar's official site, not from search ads or messaging groups.
Recent example: the Jio Platforms IPO used KFin Technologies as registrar; see the Jio IPO allotment status guide for the exact steps on KFin, BSE and NSE.
How to find the registrar for any IPO
- Offer document (DRHP/RHP): the cover page lists the registrar with address, phone, email and SEBI registration number.
- Issue advertisement: price band ads in newspapers carry the registrar's details.
- BSE and NSE issue pages: the public issue information includes the registrar.
- Our live IPO dashboard: each issue page shows the registrar and its contact details where available.
Using the registrar's site: allotment status
Every registrar's IPO status page works in a similar way:
- Select the company. It usually appears only after the basis of allotment is finalised.
- Choose a search key: PAN, application number, or DP ID and client ID (some also accept bank account details).
- Enter details and captcha; submit.
- Read shares applied and shares allotted.
If the registrar's site is slow on result day, the same status is available on BSE's and NSE's application status pages. The general method is in how to check IPO allotment status.
Using the registrar for problems
| Problem | Registrar's role | Also contact |
|---|---|---|
| Money still blocked after T+2 | Confirms allotment and unblock file | Your bank (SCSB) first |
| Debit without allotment | Confirms you were not allotted | Bank, for reversal |
| Allotted but shares not in demat | Confirms corporate action and credit | Broker / DP |
| Bid shown as rejected | Explains the reason | Broker, if it was a mandate issue |
| Wrong number of shares | Rechecks the basis of allotment |
When writing to the registrar, include company name, application number, PAN, DP ID and client ID, the issue of concern, and screenshots. If the registrar does not resolve the complaint, file on SEBI SCORES (scores.sebi.gov.in); the entity has to respond there within set timelines, and SEBI's SMART ODR portal is available after that.
Worked example: three IPOs, three registrars (illustrative)
Ravi applied in three mainboard IPOs that closed in the same week, each at one lot at the upper band:
| IPO | Registrar | Lot × upper band | Blocked | Result | Debited | Unblocked |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| A | KFin Technologies | 40 × ₹350 | ₹14,000 | Allotted 1 lot | ₹14,000 | ₹0 |
| B | MUFG Intime India | 28 × ₹520 | ₹14,560 | Not allotted | ₹0 | ₹14,560 |
| C | Bigshare Services | 120 × ₹118 | ₹14,160 | Not allotted | ₹0 | ₹14,160 |
Total blocked: ₹14,000 + ₹14,560 + ₹14,160 = ₹42,720. Total released: ₹14,560 + ₹14,160 = ₹28,720. Total debited: ₹14,000.
If IPO B's ₹14,560 were still blocked three working days after T+2, Ravi would contact his bank first, then write to MUFG Intime India (the registrar for B), not to KFin, even though KFin is the registrar he had just used for A. Each issue has its own registrar, so complaints must go to the right one. Late unblocking can attract compensation of at least ₹100 a day under SEBI's framework (details in IPO money blocked not refunded).
Registrar, RTA, depository, broker: who does what
- Registrar to the issue: runs the IPO allotment and grievances for that issue.
- RTA (share transfer agent): maintains the listed company's shareholder register afterwards; usually the same firm.
- Depository (NSDL/CDSL): holds your shares electronically; credits them on the registrar's instruction.
- Broker / DP: where you placed the bid and hold your demat account.
- SCSB / sponsor bank: blocks and releases your money.
Safety points
- Registrars never ask for your UPI PIN, OTP, demat password or a fee to "confirm" or "speed up" allotment.
- Fake registrar helpline numbers circulate in search ads and social media. Use only the contact details in the offer document or on the registrar's official website.
- No registrar can change the result of an allotment lottery.

Frequently asked questions
What is a registrar in an IPO?
The registrar to the issue is a SEBI-registered intermediary appointed by the company. It collects and validates bids, works out the basis of allotment with the stock exchange, credits shares to demat accounts, arranges unblocking of funds and handles investor complaints about the issue.
Which are the main IPO registrars in India?
KFin Technologies, MUFG Intime India (formerly Link Intime India) and Bigshare Services handle a large share of mainboard IPOs. Others include Cameo Corporate Services, Skyline Financial Services, Purva Sharegistry, Integrated Registry Management Services and Maashitla Securities, the last being common in SME issues.
What is the new name of Link Intime?
Link Intime India Private Limited was renamed MUFG Intime India Private Limited with effect from 31 December 2024, after its parent group was acquired by Mitsubishi UFJ Trust and Banking. Its address and contact details did not change.
How do I find the registrar of an IPO?
The registrar's name, address, phone and investor grievance email are printed in the offer document (DRHP and RHP), on the issue advertisement and on exchange issue pages. Our live IPO dashboard also lists the registrar for each issue.
Can I complain to the registrar if my IPO money is not unblocked?
Yes. The registrar coordinates allotment and unblocking, so write to its investor grievance email with your application number. For a hold in your account, also complain to your bank, and escalate to SEBI SCORES if not resolved.
Is the IPO registrar the same as the RTA for a listed company?
Usually the same firms do both jobs. As registrar to an issue they handle the IPO; as share transfer agent they maintain the company's shareholder records afterwards, for dividends, transmission and physical share work.
