PM Ujjwala Yojana 2026: Free LPG Connection, ₹300 Subsidy
PM Ujjwala Yojana in 2026: who gets a free LPG connection, the ₹300 subsidy now limited to 4 refills a year, documents, how to apply on pmuy.gov.in and complain.

In this article
Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) gives a woman from a poor household a free LPG connection (deposit, first refill and stove covered) and a ₹300 subsidy per 14.2 kg cylinder paid into her bank account. As of October 2026, the scheme is active, but the subsidy now applies to only 4 refills a year, down from 9, following a change reported in June 2026. New connections can be applied for at pmuy.gov.in or at any LPG distributor.
This guide covers who is eligible, what the subsidy is really worth after the cut, the documents and steps for a new connection, and what to do when the subsidy does not reach your account.
Ujjwala status in October 2026
PMUY began in May 2016 with a target of 8 crore connections, met in September 2019. Ujjwala 2.0 added 1.6 crore connections with special help for migrant families, and a further 75 lakh connections were achieved by July 2024, taking the total to about 10.35 crore. The government then approved 25 lakh additional connections, raising the overall target to about 10.6 crore; these are being released.
The ₹300 targeted subsidy started in May 2022 at ₹200 and was raised to ₹300. For FY 2025-26, the Cabinet approved ₹300 per cylinder for up to 9 refills a year at a cost of ₹12,000 crore. In June 2026, the government cut the number of subsidised refills to 4 a year, citing higher global LPG prices and petroleum ministry data that an average Ujjwala household uses about four to five cylinders a year. The ₹300 amount per cylinder did not change. Verify the current refill limit with your distributor, as it may be revised again.
What a beneficiary gets
| Benefit | Detail (as of October 2026) |
|---|---|
| New connection | Free: security deposit, pressure regulator, hose and installation covered |
| First refill and stove | Free under Ujjwala 2.0 and the latest tranche |
| Targeted subsidy | ₹300 per 14.2 kg refill, pro-rated for 5 kg |
| Number of subsidised refills | 4 per year (was 9 in FY 2025-26) |
| Payment mode | Direct benefit transfer to the bank account under PAHAL (DBTL) |
| Choice of cylinder | 14.2 kg, or a 5 kg single or double bottle connection |
You pay the full market price at delivery and the ₹300 is credited later to the bank account linked with your LPG connection.
Worked example: subsidy after the cut
Take Delhi, where a 14.2 kg domestic cylinder costs ₹942 (as of mid-October 2026; prices differ by city and change often). A household that uses 6 cylinders a year:
| Item | Under the 9-refill rule | Under the 4-refill rule |
|---|---|---|
| Amount paid at delivery (6 x ₹942) | ₹5,652 | ₹5,652 |
| Subsidised refills | 6 | 4 |
| Subsidy credited (refills x ₹300) | ₹1,800 | ₹1,200 |
| Net yearly cost | ₹3,852 | ₹4,452 |
| Effective cost per cylinder | ₹642 | ₹742 |
So the cut adds about ₹600 a year for this household. A household using 4 or fewer cylinders a year is not affected. If the extra cost strains your budget, our guide on how to save money on a low salary has practical ideas.
Who is eligible for a new connection
According to pmuy.gov.in, the applicant must be:
- An adult woman, at least 18 years old
- From a household with no other LPG connection
- From one of these categories: SC households, ST households, Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Gramin) beneficiaries, Most Backward Classes, Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY), tea and ex-tea garden tribes, forest dwellers, people living on islands and river islands, SECC households (AHL TIN), or a poor household under the 14-point declaration
Families who received a PMAY-G house are explicitly covered, so if you have just got a house under the rural housing scheme, see our PMAY Gramin guide and apply for the LPG connection at the same time.
Documents required
- e-KYC of the applicant (Aadhaar-based)
- Ration card issued by the state where you apply, or another state government document showing family members, or a self-declaration (Annexure I) for migrant families
- Aadhaar of the applicant and of adult family members listed in the ration card
- Address proof: Aadhaar is enough if the connection is at the Aadhaar address
- Bank account number and IFSC
How to apply, step by step
- Online: go to pmuy.gov.in and choose "Apply for New PMUY Connection". Pick an oil company (Indane, Bharat Gas or HP Gas) and the nearest distributor, then fill the form.
- Offline: visit any LPG distributor and ask for the PMUY KYC form. Fill it and attach the documents.
- Biometric e-KYC: the distributor completes Aadhaar authentication of the applicant.
- Verification: the distributor and oil company check the household against the eligibility categories and existing LPG database (a household with an existing connection is rejected).
- Connection release: once approved, you get the cylinder, regulator, hose, stove and a consumer book. Check that nothing is charged for these items.
- Link your bank account: make sure the subsidy account is Aadhaar-seeded so that the ₹300 per refill reaches you.
Common reasons for rejection or missing subsidy
- An LPG connection already exists in the name of any member of the household
- Applicant is not an adult woman, or the household is not in an eligible category
- Aadhaar mismatch between applicant, ration card and bank account
- Bank account closed, frozen or not Aadhaar-seeded
- Biometric e-KYC pending
- Subsidised refill limit for the year already used
How to complain
- Distributor: start with the distributor; ask for a written acknowledgement.
- Helplines: 14438 (Ujjwala helpline) and 1906 (LPG emergency, for leaks) as listed on pmuy.gov.in. You can also use your oil company's app or website complaint section.
- PAHAL grievance form: a form for DBTL subsidy grievances is available on pmuy.gov.in.
- CPGRAMS: pgportal.gov.in, addressed to the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, if the oil company does not resolve it.
- Bank side: if the subsidy was credited but you cannot access it because of an account problem, ask your bank; see bank account frozen for steps.
Beware of fake Ujjwala websites and agents
Many websites and social media pages copy the Ujjwala name and ask for an "application fee" or "registration charge". There is no fee for a PMUY connection. Apply only on pmuy.gov.in or at a distributor. Do not share OTPs or bank PINs with callers claiming to be from a gas company or "Ujjwala office". Report fraud at cybercrime.gov.in or call 1930.

Frequently asked questions
How much subsidy does an Ujjwala beneficiary get in 2026?
The targeted subsidy is ₹300 per 14.2 kg cylinder, pro-rated for 5 kg cylinders. From June 2026 the government reported that it is limited to 4 subsidised refills a year instead of 9, so the maximum yearly subsidy is about ₹1,200 instead of ₹2,700.
Who is eligible for a PM Ujjwala Yojana connection?
An adult woman aged 18 or above from a poor household with no other LPG connection in the household. She must belong to a listed category such as SC, ST, PMAY-Gramin, Antyodaya Anna Yojana, Most Backward Classes, forest dwellers, tea garden tribes, island residents, SECC households, or a poor household under the 14-point declaration.
Is the Ujjwala connection really free?
Yes. The security deposit, the first refill and the stove are covered by the government and oil marketing companies for PMUY connections. You should not pay the distributor for these items.
How do I apply for a new Ujjwala connection?
Apply online on pmuy.gov.in by choosing an oil company and distributor, or visit any Indane, Bharat Gas or HP Gas distributor with your Aadhaar, ration card or family document, and bank details. Migrant families can give a self-declaration instead of address proof.
Why is my Ujjwala subsidy not coming in my bank account?
Common reasons are an Aadhaar not linked to the LPG connection or bank account, a closed or changed bank account, pending e-KYC, or having already used the subsidised refills for the year. Ask your distributor to check the PAHAL (DBTL) status and complete biometric e-KYC.
