CIBIL MSME Rank (CMR): Business Credit Score Explained
What is CIBIL MSME Rank? CMR-1 to CMR-10 explained, how it differs from your personal CIBIL score, who gets one, how lenders use it and how to improve it.

In this article
The CIBIL MSME Rank (CMR) is TransUnion CIBIL's credit rating for a business, on a scale from CMR-1 (lowest risk) to CMR-10 (highest risk). It is calculated from the business's commercial credit history and predicts how likely the business is to turn into a non-performing asset over the next 12 months. Banks and NBFCs use it, alongside the owners' personal CIBIL scores, to approve and price business loans.
What the CIBIL MSME Rank is
Every business that borrows from a bank or NBFC in its own name builds a commercial credit history. TransUnion CIBIL compiles it in a Company Credit Report (CCR), and the CMR is the summary rank printed on that report. Lenders report term loans, cash credit, overdraft, working capital lines, bank guarantees and letters of credit for the entity, so the CCR is a different file from the consumer report you see as an individual.
| Personal CIBIL score | CIBIL MSME Rank | |
|---|---|---|
| Who it rates | An individual (by PAN) | A business entity |
| Scale | 300–900, higher is better | CMR-1 to CMR-10, lower is better |
| Report | Consumer credit report | Company Credit Report (CCR) |
| Data used | Personal loans, cards, home and car loans | Business loans, CC/OD, guarantees, trade facilities |
| Main use | Retail loans and cards | MSME and business credit |
CMR bands and what they mean
CIBIL describes the rank as a risk ladder. The grouping below is a common way lenders and guides describe it; each lender sets its own cut-offs.
| Rank | Risk level | Typical lender view |
|---|---|---|
| CMR-1 to CMR-3 | Low | Easiest approvals; may qualify for better pricing |
| CMR-4 to CMR-5 | Low to moderate | Generally acceptable, with normal checks |
| CMR-6 to CMR-7 | Moderate | More scrutiny, security or guarantees may be asked |
| CMR-8 to CMR-10 | High | Frequent rejection or high rates |
| No rank / NA | Not enough data | Assessed on documents and promoter scores |
Lenders treat the rank as one input, not a decision. Cash flows, GST returns, bank statements, collateral and the promoters' personal histories all count too.
Who has a CMR, and who should care
- Companies, LLPs and partnership firms that borrow in their own name are the main users. A rank requires commercial credit exposure that falls within the range CIBIL ranks; various guides cite exposure limits up to about ₹50 crore, but verify the current coverage on cibil.com.
- Sole proprietors borrow largely on the owner's PAN, so lenders lean on the owner's personal CIBIL score. A proprietor with a separate business loan, cash credit or overdraft may also have a commercial record.
- New businesses with no borrowing in the entity's name usually show no rank. That is not a negative, but lenders will look harder at documents and the promoters.
For most MSME loans, including Mudra and other government-backed schemes, lenders check both the business record and the personal scores of owners or directors. If you are applying, read our business loan and Mudra loan guide and the common Mudra loan rejection reasons.
What drives your CMR
CIBIL does not publish its model, but guides and lenders point to the same factors:
- Repayment track record on term loans and instalments. Overdues on business loans are reported much like retail DPD; see our explainer on CIBIL report codes.
- Utilisation of working capital limits. A cash credit or overdraft drawn to the limit month after month signals stress even if interest is paid.
- Length and mix of credit in the entity's name.
- Recent enquiries from lenders, which show the business is shopping for credit.
- Negative events such as restructuring, suit-filed accounts, invoked guarantees or wilful-default tags.
- Group and related-party behaviour, where linked entities or guarantors default.
Worked example: why a better rank saves money
Rahul Enterprises (illustrative) has a ₹20 lakh cash credit limit and needs a ₹25 lakh term loan over five years.
Utilisation. For the last six months, month-end drawings have averaged ₹19 lakh, which is 95% of the limit. If the firm collects receivables faster and brings average use down to ₹12 lakh, utilisation falls to 60%. Lenders generally read the lower figure as healthier.
Pricing. Suppose a lender offers 11% to a borrower with a strong rank and 13% to a borrower with a weaker one (illustrative rates only):
| Strong rank (11%) | Weaker rank (13%) | |
|---|---|---|
| Loan | ₹25,00,000 | ₹25,00,000 |
| Tenure | 60 months | 60 months |
| EMI | about ₹54,356 | about ₹56,883 |
| Total interest | about ₹7,61,363 | about ₹9,12,961 |
The weaker rank costs about ₹2,527 more every month and roughly ₹1.52 lakh more in interest over five years. Run your own figures through our EMI calculator.
How to check your CIBIL MSME Rank
- Go to cibil.com directly (not through ads or SMS links) and open the commercial or CIBIL Rank section.
- Enter the business name, constitution, PAN, GSTIN, address and contact details.
- Choose a plan. Unlike the free annual consumer report, the commercial report and rank are paid products; check current pricing on the official site.
- Complete verification with OTP and upload KYC documents such as business PAN, GST certificate and registration proof.
- Download the CCR and CMR when they are released and check every facility listed.
Experian, Equifax and CRIF High Mark also offer commercial reports with their own scores. Lenders may use any of them; see CIBIL vs Experian, Equifax and CRIF.
How to improve your CMR
- Pay every instalment and interest debit on time. Set up auto-debit from the business account.
- Keep CC/OD utilisation comfortably below the limit, ideally with regular credits that show the account is actively rotated.
- Separate personal and business finances, so business stress does not land on your personal score and vice versa. See separate personal and business finances.
- Avoid many loan applications at once. Each lender enquiry is visible.
- Fix errors early. Wrong entries in a commercial report can be disputed with CIBIL and the lender; the RBI process and timelines in our CIBIL report error dispute guide are the starting point.
- Keep owners' personal scores healthy. Follow how to improve your CIBIL score and check them free each year as explained in how to check your CIBIL score for free.
Be wary of consultants who promise to "upgrade" a CMR or remove accurate defaults for a fee. Accurate data cannot be deleted, and paid "CIBIL repair" schemes are a known scam.
Key takeaways
- The CIBIL MSME Rank rates a business from CMR-1 (lowest risk) to CMR-10 (highest risk).
- It comes from the Company Credit Report and predicts the chance of the business becoming an NPA in the next 12 months.
- Lenders use it with the promoters' personal scores, cash flows and collateral.
- On-time repayment and moderate CC/OD utilisation are the biggest levers.
- A better rank can mean noticeably cheaper credit; on a ₹25 lakh loan, two percentage points is about ₹1.5 lakh of interest.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good CIBIL MSME Rank?
CMR-1 is the lowest risk and CMR-10 the highest. Ranks from CMR-1 to about CMR-4 are generally seen as healthy, while CMR-8 to CMR-10 signal high risk and usually lead to rejection or costlier credit.
Is CIBIL MSME Rank the same as a CIBIL score?
No. The CIBIL score (300 to 900) rates an individual. The CIBIL MSME Rank (1 to 10) rates a business entity such as a company, LLP or partnership, based on its commercial credit history in the Company Credit Report.
Does a sole proprietor have a CIBIL MSME Rank?
Lenders usually assess a sole proprietor mainly on the owner's personal CIBIL score, because the business and the owner are legally the same person. A commercial report may also exist if business loans were reported in the firm's name.
Why does my business show no CIBIL MSME Rank?
A rank is generated only when the business has enough commercial credit history and its total exposure falls within the range CIBIL ranks. A new business or one with very small or very large borrowings may show no rank.
How can I check my company's CIBIL MSME Rank?
Through the commercial or CIBIL Rank section of cibil.com, by submitting business details and KYC documents such as PAN and GST registration. It is a paid product, so check current plans on the official site.
Can the owner's personal score affect a business loan?
Yes. For MSME loans most lenders check the CIBIL MSME Rank or commercial report and the personal scores of promoters, partners or directors, especially where they are guarantors.
