PMMVY 2026 explained: ₹5,000 for the first child, ₹6,000 for a second girl child, who is eligible, documents, how to apply on pmmvy.wcd.gov.in and track payment.

In this article
Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY) is the central government's maternity cash benefit: ₹5,000 for the first living child in two instalments and ₹6,000 for a second child if she is a girl, paid directly into the mother's Aadhaar-seeded bank or post office account. As of October 2026 the scheme is active under PMMVY 2.0 (part of Mission Shakti), and you can apply free through your Anganwadi or ASHA worker or yourself on pmmvy.wcd.gov.in.
This guide covers who qualifies, what documents you need, the step-by-step application, how to track the payment and what to do if the money does not arrive. All rules below are from the Ministry of Women and Child Development's official PMMVY FAQ, verified in October 2026.
Who PMMVY applies to
PMMVY partly makes up for wages lost during pregnancy and encourages check-ups, institutional care and immunisation. It was launched on 1 January 2017 for the first child only. From 1 April 2022, under PMMVY 2.0, the benefit was extended to a second child if that child is a girl.
You qualify if you are a pregnant woman or lactating mother, aged 18 years 7 months to under 55 at the time of childbirth, and you meet at least one of these conditions:
- Scheduled Caste or Scheduled Tribe
- Partially (40%) or fully disabled (Divyangjan)
- BPL ration card holder, or ration card under the National Food Security Act, 2013
- Beneficiary of Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY
- e-Shram card holder
- Woman farmer who is a PM-KISAN beneficiary
- MGNREGA job card holder
- Net family income below ₹8 lakh a year
- Pregnant or lactating Anganwadi worker, Anganwadi helper or ASHA
Two points people often miss. First, the e-Shram card counts as eligibility proof, so a domestic worker or labourer who has registered on e-Shram can use that card. Second, PMMVY is not run in Telangana and Odisha, which have their own maternity benefit schemes.
What support is available (as of October 2026)
| Child | Total | Instalment | Condition |
|---|---|---|---|
| First living child | ₹5,000 | 1st: ₹3,000 | Pregnancy registered and at least two antenatal check-ups (ANC), preferably within six months of the last menstrual period (LMP) |
| 2nd: ₹2,000 | Birth registered and child has completed the first cycle of immunisation (14 weeks) | ||
| Second child, if a girl | ₹6,000 | Single instalment | Pregnancy registration and ANC as above, birth registered and first cycle of immunisation (14 weeks) completed |
The mother can also receive the Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY) cash incentive from the Health Ministry after an institutional delivery; PMMVY does not replace it.
If a pregnancy ends in a miscarriage or stillbirth, the woman is treated as a fresh beneficiary in a future pregnancy. The benefit for a second girl child applies to girls born on or after 1 April 2022.
Worked example
Sunita, 26, holds an e-Shram card. She registers her first pregnancy at the Anganwadi centre in the third month and completes two check-ups.
- After registration and ANC: ₹3,000
- After the birth is registered and the baby finishes the 14-week vaccinations: ₹2,000
- Total for the first child: ₹3,000 + ₹2,000 = ₹5,000
Two years later her second child is a girl. After the birth registration and 14-week vaccinations she receives ₹6,000 in one go. Across both children: ₹5,000 + ₹6,000 = ₹11,000, plus any JSY incentive for institutional deliveries. If her second child had been a boy, there would be no PMMVY payment for him.
Documents required
- Mother's Aadhaar (mandatory; Mission Shakti is notified under Section 7 of the Aadhaar Act). The husband's Aadhaar is not required.
- Aadhaar-seeded bank or post office account in the mother's name, enabled for Aadhaar-based payment. A zero-balance Jan Dhan account works.
- Mobile number (mandatory, for status SMS).
- Mother and Child Protection (MCP) card or ANC record showing the LMP date and check-ups.
- One eligibility proof, such as caste certificate, disability certificate, BPL or NFSA ration card, e-Shram card, MGNREGA job card, PM-JAY card, PM-KISAN details, or an income certificate showing family income below ₹8 lakh.
- For the second instalment or the girl-child benefit: birth registration details and the immunisation record.
How to apply: official process
There are two free routes.
Route 1: Through your Anganwadi or ASHA worker. This is how most women apply. The worker fills the online form for you on the PMMVY portal or mobile app, checks your Aadhaar and bank details at registration, and uploads your documents. Workers are paid a small government honorarium for this, so you never have to pay them.
Route 2: Self-registration on the portal.
- Open pmmvy.wcd.gov.in and choose the citizen login. Check that the address ends in .gov.in.
- Log in with your mobile number and OTP.
- Enter the mother's Aadhaar details and complete verification.
- Fill in pregnancy details: LMP date, ANC dates and the health facility or Anganwadi centre.
- Select your eligibility category and upload the proof.
- Enter bank or post office account details (it must be Aadhaar-seeded).
- Submit and note the registration or application ID.
After birth, the second-instalment details (birth registration and vaccinations) are added the same way, usually by the Anganwadi worker. The application is approved by the State Nodal Officer and the money goes by Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT).
Timing rules: the portal expects childbirth between LMP + 140 days and LMP + 300 days, and you can register up to 270 days after the child's birth. Do not wait that long, though: the first instalment is tied to early registration and check-ups.
Status tracking
- Log in to pmmvy.wcd.gov.in with your mobile number to see the application and payment stage.
- Watch for SMS updates on the registered mobile.
- Check your bank or post office passbook for a DBT credit.
- Ask the Anganwadi worker, who can see the status of applications in her area on the portal.
Common problems and fixes
| Problem | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Approved but money not received | Account not Aadhaar-seeded or not enabled for DBT | Visit the bank or post office and ask them to seed Aadhaar to the account for DBT; then ask the Anganwadi worker to re-push payment |
| Application rejected for eligibility | No valid category proof | Submit any one listed proof, such as an e-Shram card, NFSA ration card or income certificate |
| Name mismatch | Aadhaar name differs from bank record | Correct the bank record or Aadhaar first; small spelling differences often block DBT |
| Second instalment stuck | Birth not registered or 14-week vaccination not recorded | Register the birth with the local registrar and get the immunisation entered on the MCP card |
| Mobile number changed | OTP and SMS go to the old number | Update the number through the Anganwadi worker |
| Bank account closed or dormant | Payment bounces | Reactivate it (how to reactivate a dormant account) or give a new seeded account |
Fake websites and agents
PMMVY registration is free. Be careful of:
- Websites not ending in .gov.in that offer "PMMVY form" or "₹5,000 instant payment" after a fee.
- Calls asking for your OTP, UPI PIN or bank details to "release" the maternity money. No government official needs your OTP or PIN to pay you.
- People demanding money to fill the form. The Anganwadi worker is paid by the government.
If you lose money, report at cybercrime.gov.in or call 1930.
How to complain
- Anganwadi worker or supervisor (Child Development Project Officer at the block): most delays are fixed here.
- Helpline 1515: the Ministry announced this toll-free number for POSHAN and PMMVY from 1 November 2025, replacing 14408 (try 14408 if 1515 does not connect).
- Grievance on pmmvy.wcd.gov.in: you receive an SMS ticket number to track it. News reports say state officials are directed to resolve complaints within a month.
- CPGRAMS (pgportal.gov.in), addressed to the Ministry of Women and Child Development, if the issue stays unresolved.
For hospital costs around delivery, PMMVY money is small; see maternity insurance and Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY for cover.
Key takeaways
- PMMVY is active as of October 2026: ₹5,000 for the first child (₹3,000 + ₹2,000) and ₹6,000 for a second girl child.
- Eligibility needs one listed category, such as SC/ST, ration card, e-Shram card, MGNREGA card or family income below ₹8 lakh, and age 18 years 7 months to under 55 at childbirth.
- Apply free through the Anganwadi or ASHA worker or on pmmvy.wcd.gov.in; register up to 270 days after birth, but early is better.
- Most payment failures come from a bank account that is not Aadhaar-seeded for DBT.
- Complain via helpline 1515, the PMMVY portal or CPGRAMS; never pay agents or share your OTP.
Frequently asked questions
How much money is given under PM Matru Vandana Yojana?
Under PMMVY 2.0, as of October 2026, a mother gets ₹5,000 for her first living child in two instalments of ₹3,000 and ₹2,000. If the second child is a girl, she gets ₹6,000 in a single instalment after the birth and the first cycle of immunisation.
Who is eligible for PMMVY?
Pregnant women and lactating mothers aged 18 years 7 months to under 55 at childbirth who fall in at least one listed category, such as SC/ST, BPL or NFSA ration card holder, e-Shram card holder, MGNREGA job card holder, PM-JAY or PM-KISAN beneficiary, women with 40% or more disability, or a net family income below ₹8 lakh a year.
What is the last date to apply for PMMVY?
There is no single national deadline. A beneficiary can register on the PMMVY portal up to 270 days from the child's birth, but applying early in pregnancy is better because the first instalment depends on registration and antenatal check-ups.
Is the husband's Aadhaar required for PMMVY?
No. PMMVY 2.0 removed the mandatory requirement of the husband's Aadhaar. The mother's own Aadhaar and an Aadhaar-seeded bank or post office account are required.
What is the PMMVY helpline number?
The Ministry of Women and Child Development announced toll-free helpline 1515 for POSHAN and PMMVY from 1 November 2025, replacing 14408. You can also raise a grievance on pmmvy.wcd.gov.in or on CPGRAMS.
Is PMMVY available in every state?
PMMVY runs across the country except Telangana and Odisha, which, according to the scheme's official FAQ, implement their own maternity benefit schemes. Women in those states should ask the local Anganwadi centre about the state scheme.
