Tuition Fee Reimbursement Schemes 2026: Eligibility, Apply
How state and central tuition fee reimbursement schemes work in 2026: income limits, documents, portals like NSP, MahaDBT and ePASS, and fixes for delays.

In this article
Tuition fee reimbursement schemes pay back all or part of a student's college fees, so eligible families do not have to borrow to pay them. There is no single national scheme: as of October 2026 the main routes are the central Post-Matric Scholarships (for SC, ST, OBC and minority students, mostly through the National Scholarship Portal) and state fee reimbursement schemes such as Maharashtra's MahaDBT schemes, Telangana's ePASS and Gujarat's MYSY, each with its own income limit and portal.
The way to check eligibility is the same everywhere: your category, family income, course and type of admission decide what you get. This guide shows how to work that out and apply without paying anyone.
Who these schemes apply to
You are likely to qualify for at least one scheme if you are:
- studying after Class 10 (post-matric: Class 11-12, diploma, ITI, graduation, professional or postgraduate courses)
- admitted through the official admission process (state counselling, CAP rounds, merit lists) to an eligible government, aided or recognised college
- from a family below the scheme's income limit, and often from a specified category (SC, ST, OBC, EWS, minority, or girls in some states)
- a domicile of the state for state schemes
Usually not covered: management or NRI quota seats, many private or self-financed universities, and students who repeat a year without a valid reason.

| Scheme | Who | Income limit | What it pays | Portal |

Income limits differ by category and department within each state, so treat "varies" as "check the current notification on the portal".
Central SC scholarship status. The current funding and eligibility norms for the SC Post-Matric Scholarship were approved for 2021-22 to 2025-26. In July 2025 the government told Parliament it had no proposal to discontinue the scheme. A March 2026 news report said the government planned to raise the income limit to ₹4.5 lakh and introduce a cap on the course fees covered, but as of October 2026 we could not find an official notification of these changes, so ₹2.5 lakh remains the limit to plan around.
Andhra Pradesh naming. The state government has renamed several earlier welfare schemes since 2024, and some news reports say the fee reimbursement scheme is now called Post Matric Scholarship. Use the name and rules shown on jnanabhumi.ap.gov.in.
Worked example: Maharashtra
Priya and her brother Rohit both got engineering seats through CAP in Maharashtra. Annual tuition fee: ₹1,00,000; exam fee: ₹2,000. Family income: ₹6 lakh, EWS category.
- Priya (girl, EWS, income up to ₹8 lakh): 100% of tuition and exam fee = ₹1,00,000 + ₹2,000 = ₹1,02,000 a year.
- Rohit (boy, EWS) under the Shahu Maharaj scheme: 50% = ₹1,02,000 × 50% = ₹51,000 a year.
Over a four-year course with the same fees, Priya's support adds up to ₹1,02,000 × 4 = ₹4,08,000, provided she renews every year and meets marks and attendance rules. That is money she does not need to borrow; if your scheme covers only part of the fee, an education loan can fill the gap.
Documents required
- Aadhaar and an Aadhaar-seeded bank account in the student's name (for DBT)
- Income certificate for the current financial year from the competent revenue authority (self-declarations are often not accepted)
- Caste certificate and, for OBC or SEBC, a valid non-creamy layer certificate
- Domicile certificate for state schemes
- Admission proof: allotment letter, CAP or counselling letter, fee receipt
- Previous marksheets, and for renewals, the last year's result and attendance
- Gap certificate if you had a break in studies; disability certificate if applicable
How to apply: official process
- Find the right scheme. Search your state and category on myScheme, or open your state scholarship portal and the National Scholarship Portal (scholarships.gov.in).
- Register on the portal with Aadhaar and mobile OTP. Use the student's own details, not a parent's.
- Choose the scheme that matches your category and course. Do not apply for two schemes that cover the same fee; most portals block duplicate benefits.
- Upload certificates and enter admission and fee details exactly as on the college receipt.
- Submit and print the acknowledgement.
- Submit the printout and documents to the college scholarship desk if your state requires it. The college verifies the application online and forwards it to the district or department officer, who sanctions it.
- Renew every year in the next academic session.
In many states, if you are eligible the college should not collect the reimbursable fee from you upfront (a "freeship"), or it refunds you after the government pays. Ask the college how it handles this before paying the full fee.
Status tracking
- Log in to the portal with your application ID: stages typically read submitted, verified by institute, verified by district or department, sanctioned, and paid.
- The PFMS "Know Your Payment" option on pfms.nic.in shows DBT payments to your bank account for central schemes.
- Check your bank account and SMS for DBT credits.
Common problems and fixes
| Problem | Fix |
|---|---|
| Application pending at institute | Ask the scholarship desk to verify; colleges have their own deadline |
| Payment failed | Seed Aadhaar to the student's bank account for DBT and keep it active; update the account on the portal |
| Rejected: income certificate | Get a fresh certificate for the current year from the revenue office |
| Rejected: management quota | Not eligible in most schemes; check if any other scholarship applies |
| Name mismatch across Aadhaar, marksheet and bank | Correct the record that differs, then reapply or raise an edit request |
| Funds delayed for months | State releases are sometimes late; keep proof of application and follow up with the department |
Fake scholarship sites and agents
Applications are free. Avoid sites that are not on .gov.in or .nic.in, "scholarship agents" who take a cut, and calls asking for OTPs or bank PINs to "release" scholarship money. Report fraud at cybercrime.gov.in or 1930.
How to complain
- The college scholarship nodal officer.
- The district social welfare, tribal welfare, backward class or minority welfare officer, depending on the scheme.
- The state portal's grievance option or helpline listed on the portal; NSP has its own helpdesk for central schemes.
- CPGRAMS (pgportal.gov.in) if nothing moves.

Key takeaways
- Fee reimbursement in India comes from central post-matric scholarships and state schemes; each has its own income limit and portal, verified as of October 2026.
- The central SC post-matric scholarship still uses a ₹2.5 lakh income limit; a higher limit has been reported as planned but not notified.
- Maharashtra pays 50% of fees for eligible open-category and EWS students and 100% for EWS, SEBC and OBC girls with family income up to ₹8 lakh.
- Admission through official counselling, current income and caste certificates, and an Aadhaar-seeded bank account decide most outcomes.
- Apply and renew every year on .gov.in portals; never pay agents.
Frequently asked questions
What is a tuition fee reimbursement scheme?
It is a government scheme that pays back all or part of a student's tuition and compulsory college fees, either to the student or directly to the college. Most are post-matric scholarships run by states for SC, ST, OBC, minority, EWS or low-income students, with central funding for some categories.
What is the income limit for fee reimbursement?
It depends on the scheme. The central Post-Matric Scholarship for SC students uses a family income limit of ₹2.5 lakh a year as of October 2026, while some state schemes go up to ₹8 lakh, such as Maharashtra's schemes for open-category, EWS, SEBC and OBC students.
Can I get fee reimbursement for management quota seats?
Usually not. Most state schemes cover only seats allotted through the official admission process (such as CAP rounds or the state counselling) in eligible colleges. Maharashtra's schemes, for example, exclude management and institutional quota admissions.
Why is my fee reimbursement delayed?
Common reasons are an unseeded or inactive bank account, an expired income or caste certificate, the college not verifying the application, or the state releasing funds late. Check the status on your state portal and ask the college scholarship desk to verify your application.
Do I have to apply every year for fee reimbursement?
Yes. Most schemes need a fresh application or renewal every academic year with a current income certificate, marks and attendance, even if you received the benefit the previous year.
