How Long to Keep Loan Statements and EMI Receipts
Which loan papers to keep forever, which for 8 years and which you can shred, based on Indian tax, limitation and RBI rules, with a simple filing system.

In this article (6 sections)
Keep the papers that prove a loan is closed (NOC, closure letter, zero-balance statement and, for secured loans, the document-return acknowledgement) permanently. Keep the sanction letter, Key Facts Statement, agreement, repayment statements and receipts until the loan is closed and at least three years after; keep anything used for income-tax deductions for at least seven years after that tax year. Routine EMI SMS alerts and monthly demand notices can go once a year's statement covers them.
The reason is simple: disputes about loans tend to surface late, through a credit report error, a recovery call about an "old dues" amount, a tax query, or a property sale. This guide explains what to keep, for how long and why, as of October 2026. It is general guidance, not legal advice.
The quick answer table
| Document | How long to keep | Why |
|---|---|---|
| NOC / no-dues certificate / closure letter | Permanently | Proof that nothing is owed; needed for credit report disputes and property sale |
| Final loan statement showing zero balance | Permanently | Backs up the NOC with figures |
| Acknowledgement of original property documents returned, and proof the charge was removed (secured loans) | Permanently (keep with the property papers) | Needed when you sell or remortgage |
| Sanction letter, Key Facts Statement, loan agreement and enclosures | Until closure + at least 3 years | Evidence of agreed rate, fees and prepayment terms |
| Repayment schedule and annual / quarterly loan statements | Until closure + at least 3 years | Shows what was paid and when |
| Receipts for prepayments, part payments, cash, cheque or UPI payments | Until closure + at least 3 years | These are the payments most often missing in lender records |
| Home loan interest and principal certificates | At least 7 years after the tax year | Supports deductions if a tax query comes |
| Correspondence on complaints, settlements, restructuring | Permanently if the matter was settled; otherwise closure + 3 years | Settlement terms affect credit reports for years |
| EMI SMS alerts, routine reminders | Until the monthly or annual statement is downloaded | Duplicates of the statement |
Why these time periods
Limitation for money claims
Under the Limitation Act, 1963, a suit to recover money lent generally has to be filed within three years, while a claim to enforce a mortgage over immovable property has a much longer period of twelve years. A written, signed acknowledgement of the debt or a part payment before the period ends can start a fresh period. So if someone claims an old personal loan was not fully paid, proof of closure from that time is your defence. That is why we suggest at least three years after closure as the minimum, and permanent retention for the NOC itself.
Income-tax reassessment
If you claimed the home loan interest deduction (Section 22 of the Income-tax Act, 2025, old Section 24(b)) or principal deduction (Section 123, old Section 80C) under the old regime, keep the lender's certificates. Under the Income-tax Act, 2025, the department can normally issue a reassessment notice within four years and three months from the end of the tax year, extended up to six years and three months where the escaped income is likely to be ₹50 lakh or more. Seven years after the tax year covers both. Our guide to the home loan interest certificate explains what it should show.
Credit report disputes
Closed loans stay in your credit history. If a lender reports a closed loan as active, "settled" or overdue, the bureau dispute process asks for supporting proof. Under RBI's credit information rules, a dispute must be resolved within 30 days, with compensation of ₹100 a day for delay, but you still need the NOC and statement to win it. See CIBIL report error dispute.
Lenders' own record keeping
Banks and NBFCs keep transaction records for several years under the Prevention of Money-laundering Act and RBI's KYC directions, generally at least five years. That helps, but after mergers, system migrations or the loan being sold, old statements can be slow or difficult to obtain. Download them while the loan is live.
Worked example: counting the dates
Meena closed her home loan on 15 March 2027. She claimed the old-regime interest deduction for the tax year 2026-27, which ended on 31 March 2027.
| Item | Rule | Keep until at least |
|---|---|---|
| NOC, zero-balance statement, property document return letter | Permanent | Always |
| Interest certificate for 2026-27 | 4 years 3 months after 31 March 2027 | 30 June 2031 |
| Same, if a large-income case (₹50 lakh+ escaped income) | 6 years 3 months | 30 June 2033 |
| EMI statements and prepayment receipts | Closure + 3 years | 15 March 2030 |
A simple rule of seven years after the last tax year covers all of these except the permanent items: 31 March 2034. Her loan was ₹30 lakh over 20 years; if she wants to check that her total interest paid matches the lender's certificates, she can rebuild the schedule on our EMI calculator.
A filing system that works
- One folder per loan, named with the lender, loan account number and start year, both on paper and in cloud storage.
- At sanction, save the sanction letter, KFS, signed agreement and the repayment schedule.
- Every April, download the annual loan statement and interest certificate, and the bank statements showing EMI debits. Floating-rate EMI borrowers can also get a quarterly statement from their lender.
- For every non-routine payment (prepayment, part payment, charge reversal), save the receipt or UTR the same day.
- At closure, follow the loan closure checklist: NOC, zero-balance statement, mandate cancellation, original documents and charge removal. For secured loans, RBI requires lenders to return original property documents within 30 days of full repayment, with ₹5,000 a day compensation for delay attributable to the lender.
- Three months after closure, check your credit report shows the loan as closed and keep a PDF copy.
- Once a year, shred papers that have passed their retention date, except permanent ones.
Store scans in two places, for example cloud storage and an external drive, and keep originals of NOCs and property papers in a safe place. Our guide on how to read a bank statement helps match EMI debits to the lender's records.
What not to do
- Do not discard the NOC once the loan is closed. It is the one paper you may need decades later.
- Do not rely only on the lender's app. Accounts get closed, apps change and logins expire after closure.
- Do not share loan documents with unknown callers offering "CIBIL repair" or "loan settlement" help, and never share OTPs or PINs.
- Do not throw away papers in a loan you are disputing until the dispute is closed in writing.
- Do not keep only screenshots of payments where a proper receipt or statement is available.
Key takeaways
- Keep closure proof (NOC, zero-balance statement, document-return letter) permanently.
- Keep agreements, KFS, statements and receipts until closure plus at least three years.
- Keep tax certificates at least seven years after the tax year under the Income-tax Act, 2025 reassessment limits.
- Download statements every April while the loan is live; old records are harder to get later.
- Check your credit report after closure and file the PDF with your loan papers.
Frequently asked questions
How long should I keep loan documents after closing a loan?
Keep the NOC or closure letter, the final statement showing zero balance and, for secured loans, the acknowledgement of property documents returned, permanently. Keep running EMI statements and receipts for at least three years after closure, and longer if you claimed tax benefits on the loan.
How long should I keep home loan interest certificates for tax?
Keep them for at least seven years after the tax year. Under the Income-tax Act, 2025 a reassessment notice can normally be issued within four years and three months from the end of a tax year, and up to six years and three months where escaped income is ₹50 lakh or more.
Can I get an old loan statement from my bank after many years?
Usually for recent years, through net banking, the app or the branch. Banks keep transaction records for several years under anti-money-laundering and RBI KYC rules, but older statements may take time, carry a fee, or be unavailable after a merger or system change. Do not rely on getting them later.
Do I need to keep every EMI receipt if my bank statement shows the debits?
Not necessarily. A bank statement showing each EMI debit, together with the lender's loan account statement, is usually enough. Keep separate receipts for cash, cheque, UPI or part payments that may not show clearly in the lender's records.
Is a digital copy of the NOC enough?
A digital copy is useful, but keep the original NOC signed or digitally issued by the lender. For property loans, also keep the original title documents you got back and the letter showing the lender's charge was removed.
