"My scholarship was rejected for name mismatch, but it's the same person!" The one-line fix: pick one correct spelling, the one on your Aadhaar if Aadhaar is right, and make your bank account and scheme application match it exactly. Correct the bank and the scheme application first; change Aadhaar only if Aadhaar is the one that is wrong, because Aadhaar name updates are generally limited to two in a lifetime.

All rules and fees here are as of October 2026.

Who this applies to

  • Beneficiaries whose DBT, scholarship or subsidy shows "name mismatch" or failed validation
  • Women whose bank account still carries a maiden name while Aadhaar has the married name, or the reverse
  • People with initials in one record and full names in another ("R. Kumar" vs "Ramesh Kumar")
  • Anyone whose name was spelt differently by a school, bank or enrolment operator

Why names are compared

Many scheme portals and banks check that the name in the application, the bank account and Aadhaar agree before paying. Some use exact matching and others a similarity score, and rules vary by scheme. A missing surname, swapped first and last name, a "Kumari" vs "Kumar", or a spelling slip can be enough to hold a payment. See how this fits the bigger picture in DBT payment not received.

Which record to correct: a decision table

Situation Correct this Why
Aadhaar is right, bank differs Bank account name Quick KYC update, no lifetime cap
Aadhaar is right, scheme application differs Scheme application Through the portal's edit option or the department
Aadhaar itself is wrong (typo, old name) Aadhaar first, then the others Aadhaar is the base most schemes verify against
Name legally changed (marriage, gazette) Aadhaar, then bank, then scheme Carry the change proof to each
Only order or initials differ Ask the bank to record the full name as in Aadhaar Avoids failing strict checks

Documents required

For Aadhaar name update: a proof-of-identity document in the correct name from UIDAI's accepted list (for example passport, PAN card, voter ID, or a government-issued certificate). For a changed name, supporting proof such as a marriage certificate or gazette notification.

For bank name correction: written request, Aadhaar (or another officially valid document) in the correct name, passbook, a recent photograph if the bank asks, and the change proof if the name has legally changed.

For scheme correction: the portal's correction request, plus updated Aadhaar and bank passbook copies.

How to correct each record

Aadhaar

  1. Check the UIDAI website or the official Aadhaar app first. UIDAI has been adding online update options; what is available online changes, so confirm before travelling.
  2. Otherwise book an appointment or walk into an Aadhaar enrolment or update centre with original documents.
  3. Pay the fee: ₹75 for a demographic update (fee schedule effective October 2025).
  4. Keep the update request number (URN) and track it on the UIDAI site.
  5. UIDAI generally allows a name update twice in a lifetime. A third change needs an exception request through a UIDAI regional office, so get it right the first time.

Bank account

  1. Submit a written request at the home branch with documents, or use the bank's KYC update channel if it allows name changes.
  2. Ask the branch to make the name exactly as on Aadhaar, including middle name and surname.
  3. Ask whether Aadhaar seeding needs to be redone after the change, and check your NPCI mapping status.
  4. Collect an updated passbook page. Our bank KYC update guide covers the KYC side.

Scheme application

  1. Use the portal's edit or correction option if available (some lock edits after verification).
  2. Otherwise write to the scheme's nodal officer or district office with corrected Aadhaar and passbook copies.
  3. Ask them to re-validate your account and re-initiate any rejected payment.

Worked example: cost and time

Sunita's Aadhaar says "Sunita Ramesh Patil". Her bank account says "Sunita R Jadhav" (maiden name). Her state scholarship application uses the Aadhaar name. Two payments of ₹7,500 each (illustrative) were rejected for name mismatch.

  • Option A: change Aadhaar to match the bank. Wrong move: Aadhaar is already correct, it costs ₹75 and uses one of her two lifetime name updates, and the bank would still differ from her current legal name.
  • Option B: change the bank name to match Aadhaar, using her marriage certificate. Bank KYC changes generally carry no fee, though check your bank's schedule.

Pending money once she fixes it: 2 × ₹7,500 = ₹15,000, subject to the department re-initiating the payments.

She chooses Option B, then asks the scholarship office to re-validate.

Status tracking

  • Aadhaar: track the URN on the UIDAI site; download the updated e-Aadhaar after approval.
  • Bank: check that the passbook and app show the new name.
  • Payments: recheck PFMS payment status and the scheme portal after re-validation.

Common problems and fixes

Problem Fix
Aadhaar update rejected Read the rejection reason, use a stronger document, and reapply; call 1947
Name limit reached Ask UIDAI about the exception process through its regional office
Bank changed name, DBT still fails Re-seed Aadhaar at the bank; ask the scheme to re-validate
Mobile not linked to Aadhaar for OTP Update mobile at an Aadhaar centre first (bank mobile update is separate)
Certificates in another spelling Ask the issuing office to correct them, or keep an affidavit if the scheme accepts one

How to complain

  1. UIDAI: helpline 1947 or the UIDAI grievance option for Aadhaar update problems.
  2. Bank: branch, then the grievance or nodal officer; RBI Ombudsman at cms.rbi.org.in or 14448 if not resolved in 30 days.
  3. Scheme: portal grievance or helpline; if no response, CPGRAMS at pgportal.gov.in.

Ready-to-copy request to the bank

Subject: Correction of name in account [last 4 digits] as per Aadhaar

My name in your records is "[current bank name]". My name as per Aadhaar
is "[Aadhaar name]". Government DBT payments are failing because of
this mismatch.

Please update my name exactly as per Aadhaar, re-seed my Aadhaar in the
NPCI mapper if required, and confirm in writing. Copies of Aadhaar and
[marriage certificate / gazette] are attached.

Name: [Aadhaar name], Mobile: [number]

What not to do

  • Do not change Aadhaar just to match a wrong bank record; you may waste one of two lifetime name updates.
  • Do not pay agents for "guaranteed" Aadhaar or scheme corrections; official fees are fixed and receipts are given.
  • Do not open a new account with a third spelling; it adds another mismatch.
  • Do not share Aadhaar OTPs with anyone offering help over the phone.

Key takeaways

  • Choose one correct name, usually Aadhaar's, and make every record match it exactly.
  • Fix the bank and scheme records first; they are quicker and have no lifetime cap.
  • Aadhaar name updates are generally allowed twice in a lifetime; the centre fee is ₹75.
  • After any change, recheck Aadhaar seeding and ask the scheme to re-validate.
  • Rejected payments return to the government; ask the department to re-initiate them.

Frequently asked questions

Which record should I correct first, Aadhaar or bank?

Start with the record that is wrong. If Aadhaar has your correct name, change the bank record to match Aadhaar, which is usually quicker and has no lifetime limit. Correct Aadhaar only if Aadhaar itself is wrong, because UIDAI generally allows a name update only twice in a lifetime.

How many times can I change my name in Aadhaar?

UIDAI guidance allows a name update twice in a lifetime with valid documents. Requests beyond that need an exception process through a UIDAI regional office.

What is the fee for a name change in Aadhaar?

As of October 2026, a demographic update such as a name change costs ₹75 at an Aadhaar enrolment or update centre under the fee schedule effective from October 2025. Check the UIDAI website or app for any online option and current fees.

Can a small spelling difference stop my DBT payment?

It can. Some scheme systems and banks compare names and may reject or hold a payment when they differ, for example a missing surname, an initial, or a maiden name still in the bank. Aligning all records is the safest fix.

How do I change my name in a bank account?

Visit the branch with a written request, Aadhaar or another officially valid document in the correct name, and, for a changed name, proof such as a marriage certificate or gazette notification. Many banks complete it as a KYC update.
